The ‘June School Holidays’ is always an exciting period for movie buffs because it is the season where new movies are being released. However, with the wide selection of movies that are available, it may be difficult for you to make a decision which one to watch first because of the ever-increasing movie ticket prices.
Over the course of one month [since early May], we have watched 5 movies that are still currently showing in the cinemas and if making a decision about what movie to watch is tough, you might just want to check out what we have to say about them

Bad Neighbors
Release Date: 08 May 2014
Rating: R21
Duration: 1 hour 37 minutes

Bad Neighbors Movie Synopsis

Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Rose Byrne lead the cast of Neighbors, a comedy about a young couple suffering from arrested development who are forced to live next to a fraternity house after the birth of their newborn baby. Neighbors is directed by Nick Stoller.

Our Personal Review of Bad Neighbors

Bad Neighbors was extremely hilarious and we really enjoyed ourselves watching the movie. If you need a good laugh, Bad Neighbors is probably the best movie for that. Be warn though, you will need to be really open-minded as some of the scenes can be quite obscene.

Godzilla
Release Date: 15 May 2014
Rating: PG 13
Duration: 2 hours 3 minutes

Godzilla Movie Synopsis

An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

Our Personal Review of Godzilla

When the name of Godzilla comes to mind, most people would have the impression that the film is about a monster that is out to cause destruction and endanger mankind. However, this really isn’t the case and you will find out why when you watch the movie. In all honesty, we felt that there were too much dialogue going on and when the movie has reached its climax, the audience might already be half asleep by then.

Maleficent
Release Date: 29 May 2014
Rating: PG
Duration: 1 hour 28 minutes

Maleficent Movie Synopsis

From Disney comes “Maleficent” – the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal – an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom – and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

Our Personal Review of Maleficent

We are really big fans of Disney’s movies and so, we might be a little bias in our review of Maleficent. However, in all fairness, Maleficent is really a worthy movie to catch because the storyline is unlike that of the classic “Sleeping Beauty”. Though Maleficent has a slightly dark theme to it, there are strong learning points that both children and adults can draw from and we highly recommend it.

Edge of Tomorrow
Release Date: 05 June 2014
Rating: PG 13
Duration: 1 hour 53 minutes

Edge of Tomorrow Movie Synopsis

The epic action of Edge of Tomorrow unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again… and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

Our Personal Review of Edge of Tomorrow

If you’re a sci-fi fan, the Edge of Tomorrow is just the movie for you and if you have ever watched the movie, “Vantage Point”, you might probably notice a little bit of similarity except that Edge of Tomorrow takes on a sci-fi theme with a single-person perspective; unlike “Vantage Point” that takes on multiple perspective and keeps repeating itself till the audience gets bored.

The beginning of Edge of Tomorrow was slightly draggy but it went on smoothly as the plot develops. Fans of Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt would definitely love this movie.

The Lion Men 2: Ultimate Showdown
Release Date: 12 June 2014
Rating: PG
Duration: 1 hour 47 minutes

The Lion Men 2: Ultimate Showdown Movie Synopsis

The Lion Men: Ultimate Showdown picks up after Mikey (Wang Weiliang)’s and Babyface (Maxi Lim)’s superb performance in the first round of the competition. Shi Shen (Tosh Zhang) becomes jealous of Mikey, especially after he discovers Mikey’s feelings for Xiao Yu (Eva Cheng).

More determined to succeed, Shi Shen spends every waking hour in training and neglects Xiao Yu. Even ignoring her efforts to cook a meal for him. As the finals approach, Xiao Yu begs Shi Shen to withdraw from the competition after he is nearly injured in a sabotage attempt.

Matters worsen when Xiao Yu is kidnapped during the finals. Shi Shen and Mikey are both torn between the competition and their love for Xiaoyu. Who will step up to save her?

Our Personal Review of The Lion Men 2: Ultimate Showdown

Earlier in February this year, we wrote a review about The Lion Men [Part 1] and we felt that the show was distasteful because of its numerous ad placements. In fact, after watching The Lion Men [Part 1], we decided that we were not going to pay to watch The Lion Men 2: Ultimate Showdown; afterall, who wants to spend money watching advertisements for 1.5 hours right?

So, STAR Chinese Movies, under FOX International Channels, invited us to watch The Lion Men 2: Ultimate Showdown and we must admit, it was better than The Lion Men [Part 1]. A considerable amount of effort was put in to bring out the emotional aspect of the film and we must say, Wang Weiliang and Eva Cheng did a pretty good job in portraying their roles.

Having said that, the film still has numerous ad placements and you will get what we mean when Dester Beer, NETS Flashpay, Resorts World Sentosa, and Keppel Land come to the scene. Though The Lion Men 2: Ultimate Showdown is a local production, we felt as if the movie was more targeted towards the China audience.

Ex On The Beach is a British reality television series that is broadcasted on MTV. The series was first announced in February 2014 and it premiered on 27 April 2014 in Singapore. The official list of cast members were released on 13 March 2014 and includes four single boys; Ashley Cain, Jack Lomax, Liam Lewis and Marco Alexandre, and as well as four single girls; Chloe Goodman, Emily Gillard, Farah Sattaur and Vicky Pattison.

What’s Ex On The Beach All About?

Narrated by Irish comedian Andrew Maxwell, Ex On The Beach features eight single men and women who are invited to enjoy a luxury holiday; believing they are being set up for a holiday romance. As MTV cameras follow their every move along a road of new romances, a twist of events took place; ex-boyfriends and girlfriends of cast members arrive unexpectedly, and the whole drama begins to unfold into something totally unexpected!

With no-one knowing ‘whose ex will be next’, each ‘ex’ has a different motive for appearing, whether it’s to win their partner back, or just to seek vengeance after their bad romance.

Our Personal Opinion of Ex On The Beach

Ex On The Beach is definitely not a show for those under 18s because of its strong language and sexual references throughout. If you’re a dude like me, you probably will not enjoy the show because I personally found it quite boring; especially with the many mini “interviews” that kind of just disrupts the whole chain of events. There were just too many dialogues and not much action and that kind of put me off. I guess I will be better off with reality TV shows like Fear Factor, The Amazing Race, and Survivor.

On the other hand, Jacqueline personally enjoyed the show and found it quite interesting to see how the plot would thicken and develop; especially when new exes were invited to the show to shake things up. She particularly found the reactions of the cast members to be quite entertaining when relationships between cast members get entangled in a big mess.

Our conclusion would be, the ladies would probably enjoy Ex On The Beach more than the gentlemen.

The next episode of Ex On The Beach will be broadcasted on 11 June 2014 [Wednesday] at 11PM at MTV Asia which can be found on StarHub TV Channel #533 and SingTel mioTV Channel #350. If you have missed out on the previous episodes, you can watch them online at MTV Asia Official Website.

Get ready for a time of cat-fights, squabbles, and break-ups! For more information and updates from MTV Asia, do check out MTV Asia Official Website and MTV Asia Facebook Page.

We were very honoured to have been invited by the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra to attend “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” concert that took place yesterday afternoon at The Star Performing Arts Centre and we were absolutely blown away by the splendid performance.

[Image Credits to Metropolitan Festival Orchestra]

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, is a continuation of a journey that started 12 months ago with The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, which was attended by more than 7,000 audience members, the highest number for any single orchestra-based concert production in Singapore in 2013. To reach out to even more audiences and make the performances more accessible to the general public, ticket prices have been reduced by as much as 30% from last year, while more seats have been made available for public purchase.

[Image Credits to Metropolitan Festival Orchestra]

This highly-anticipated production gave audiences the opportunity to relive the awesome experience of the full-length Academy Award-winning motion picture projected on a giant screen and complete with Howard Shore’s iconic soundtrack performed live by the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra and the Vocal Associates Festival Chorus and Children’s Choir.

Our Personal Review of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Concert

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is not just any ordinary concert. With the awesome experience of immersing ourselves in the full-length Academy Award-winning motion picture projected on a giant cinematic screen complete with original dialogue and sound effects, while listening to Howard Shore’s iconic soundtrack score that was performed live by the 250 musicians of a full orchestra and chorus, we had a really fantastic time and developed a greater appreciation for film music and live performance. The conductor for the concert was none other than Justin Freer and he did a really amazing and precise job. We are pretty sure the audiences had a really good time and were watching the concert in awe.

[Image Credits to Metropolitan Festival Orchestra]

We really do hope that Metropolitan Festival Orchestra would consider presenting The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King next year!

If you have missed out on The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, there is another concert, “Bridging Frontiers”, that is presented by the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra and it will be taking place on 21 June 2014 at the Esplanade Concert Hall at 7:30PM.

Reflecting the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra’s vision to enrich lives through orchestral performances that connect, inspire and entertain, this concert will bring together lovers of both Chinese and Western classical music in a celebration of orchestral music in a uniquely Singapore context, combining the artistry of some of Singapore’s most recognisable and respected classical musicians; featuring Han Chang Chou (horn), Ling Hock Siang (erhu) and Wilson Neo (erhu).

Ticket price ranges from SGD$19 to SGD$190 and you can purchase your tickets from SISTIC Singapore.

A few weeks ago, we were at the Avant Premiere, an industry premiere screening of BA [Hons] Thesis Films from The Puttnam School of Film, LASALLE College of the Arts, and a mix of short documentaries and fiction films were showcased. About 200 invited guests were in attendance for this year’s screening of the Avant Premiere and it was held in conjunction with The LASALLE Show 2014, which marks the grand finale of an artistic education in creativity and imagination and the transformation of budding young talents to professional artists in the larger creative industries’ ecosystem.
There were a total of 7 short documentaries and fiction films that were screened at the Avant Premiere and we really enjoyed every single one of them because they resonated well with us. In fact, some of the films really touched us and left us tearing because they were so meaningful. Having seen the exceptional films, we say, the future of Singapore’s film-making industry is definitely shining bright.
There were 2 films that we particularly enjoyed at the Avant Premiere and they are, “Farewell Summer” and “The Collectors”. We have embedded the trailers of the 2 films in this blog post for you to watch but if you want to catch the film in its entirety, you might need to contact the filmmakers directly.

Farewell Summer, directed by Wilson Tan and produced by Vanessa Sim

Film Synopsis:

Han looks forward to a month-long of daydreaming and a short holiday trip just like his peers, to celebrate his birthday after he is finally done with his year-end exams. However he is in for another ride when he learns that his ailing grandmother would be staying with them indefinitely and causes the small family to deal with the plans that awaits them instead of the ones they have in mind. Director’s Statement Having been inspired by his own mother and grandmother for being such strong figures in his life, shaping him to be the person he is today, led Wilson to create a story as such with strong female characters, much like the ones in his life as a tribute. The film’s nature and setting of the film is something that is familiar to him, having been brought up in a similar regular working class family in Singapore, it hopes to celebrate the struggles and pleasures of the life of three individuals from three different generations through this simple drama of a working class family.

The Collectors, directed by Thais Breton and produced by Vanessa Sim

Film Synopsis:

The Collectors explores the relationship between three individuals affected by the disease of Alzheimer’s and their children, caught in a race to gather as many memories they can before it is too late. Their stories echo on the stones of the rare places left in Singapore to be imprinted with a past. A parallel is formed between an individual fright of memories loss, and a collective amnesia provoked by a local race to thrive in modernity.

May is a month of water-related activities for all of us here at A Winsome Life and last weekend, we were very happy to have Glenn Yong, a Professional Photographer, to cover an event for us at the River Safari Singapore.
In conjunction with the upcoming premiere of RIVER MONSTERS 6, renowned angling guru and biologist Jeremy Wade made a guest appearance at the River Safari as part of Discovery Channel’s ”River Monsters Live In Asia” tour where he thrilled hundreds of fans and fishing enthusiasts with spine-tingling stories of some of his most unforgettable adventures from the new season, encounters with monstrous freshwater beasts in Asia, personal tips on how to catch monster fishes, and even took the opportunity to meet his biggest fans.

Jeremy’s visit to Singapore marks the final leg of his three-city “River Monsters Live In Asia” tour which kicked off in Jakarta on 22 May 2014 and Kuala Lumpur on 24 May 2014; and in true RIVER MONSTERS style, fans had the opportunity to witness Jeremy in action as he dived into the world’s largest freshwater fish tank, the Amazon Flooded Forest, with a host of underwater creatures, including his nemesis, the arapaima; a fish that once brutally rammed him in the chest, leaving his heart with very deep bruising and pain for over six weeks.

“I’m excited to be back in Singapore after 30 years, and thinking back to that time, my life now is so different. Back then nobody was very interested to hear about freshwater fish and since then, there has been quite a bit of transformation in the fishing world. Swimming with the manatees is not something that I have done before and they felt quite friendly. I would like to thank my fans for watching River Monsters and Discovery Channel for this amazing experience and it happen,” said Jeremy after his exciting experiences.

Premiering 8 July 2014, Tuesday, at 9:00 p.m. [Singapore/Hong Kong Time] on Discovery Channel, the six-part RIVER MONSTERS 6 series is one of his most challenging; with Jeremy having to travel over the course of a year to extremely remote locations across the Amazon to get to the bottom of inexplicable mysteries surrounding some of the deadliest human attacks by the most vicious RIVER MONSTERS on the planet.

Should you miss out on any episodes of RIVER MONSTERS 6, fret not because RIVER MONSTERS 6 encores every Friday at 11:00 p.m., Saturday at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday at 11:00 a.m. Personally, we are so looking forward to watching RIVER MONSTERS 6 on StarHub TV Channel #422 [Discovery Channel].

And for fans who are hooked and cannot wait for the new season to reel in, relive the most petrifying moments of RIVER MONSTERS seasons 1 to 5 daily, Mondays to Fridays, starting 12 May 2014 through to 30 June 2013 at 7:00 p.m.

Resurrection is an American fantasy drama television series about dead people who return to life. The Number 1 Scripted Series in the United States is based on the book, “The Returned” by Jason Mott. Although similar in concept to Les Revenants, it is based on a different source, and Resurrection has no connection to the French movie or television series.

Our Opinion of Resurrection

We find the storyline extremely intriguing and very interesting. Looking at the trailer, one would have thought that this series take on a horror genre but really, it is not so scary! Rather, the series is rather mind-boggling and it makes you question everything you believe.

Resurrection Trailer

With a running duration of 42-44 minutes, there are a total of 8 episodes and if you’re the sort of person who’s into mysteries and thrillers, Resurrection is one tv series that you mustn’t miss!

You can catch the Number 1 Scripted Series in the United States, Resurrection, on Lifetime [StarHub Channel 514] every Monday at 10PM!

Oh, and if you want to catch the first episode of Resurrection, you can watch it via the following link: http://po.st/Q0uZc5

Synopsis of Resurrection

The people of Arcadia, Missouri are forever changed when their deceased loved ones suddenly start to reappear. An 8-year-old American boy [Landon Gimenez] wakes up alone in a rice paddy in a rural Chinese province with no idea how he got there. Details start to emerge when the boy, who calls himself Jacob, recalls that his hometown is Arcadia, and an Immigration agent, J. Martin Bellamy [Omar Epps], takes him there. The home he claims as his own is occupied by a 60-year-old couple, Henry [Kurtwood Smith] and Lucille Langston [Frances Fisher], who lost their son, Jacob, more than 30 years ago.

While they look different, young Jacob recognizes them as his parents. Lucille is overjoyed at the seeming miracle of her son’s reappearance. Henry is reluctant to accept that Jacob is back. Those closest to the family want answers, including Sheriff Fred Langston [Matt Craven], whose wife Barbara drowned 30 years ago while trying to save Jacob, and Fred’s daughter, Maggie [Devin Kelley], a local doctor. Pastor Tom Hale [Mark Hildreth] seeks a spiritual reason for what’s happening in his community. When things take an even more shocking turn, Maggie’s life-long friend, Elaine Richards [Samaire Armstrong], finds herself drawn into Arcadia’s growing mystery.

Bellamy, an outsider in the town, joins forces with Maggie to figure out why the unexplainable is happening in Arcadia. As their investigation plays out, Maggie learns some unsettling truths about her own past. Will they be able to solve the mystery of Arcadia before the rest of the world catches on to events there? And will they be able to protect Jacob from forces beyond their control?

Have you ever encountered a really bad service experience when you try to redeem the deal vouchers that you have purchased from daily deal vouchers websites like Groupon Singapore or AllDealsAsia.com?
Yes, we have and it can be extremely frustrating because there are tons of terms and conditions to adhere to when utilising those vouchers! Furthermore, if you have never taken the time to read the fine print on those vouchers, you might be in for a rude shock when you realise that there are hidden costs involved.

Now, how would you like if we tell you that there are indeed 1-for-1 deal offers at well-known establishments like Hard Rock Café, Brewerkz, Forest Adventure, and etc.; with absolutely minimal restrictions and no hidden costs?

Recently, we were entertained by the folks from The Entertainer at Ah Hooi’s Kitchen and we came to learn about the great one-for-one deals that The Entertainer has to offer.

Founded in 2001 [yes, long before daily deal vouchers websites like Groupon came about] by Donna Benton, The Entertainer provides ‘buy one get one free’ incentive vouchers from well-known dining, leisure, entertainment, and hotel brands across the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Europe.

If you often check out Groupon Singapore, AllDealsAsia.com, or even Deal.com.sg for the best travel, spa, and food deals, you must absolutely check out what The Entertainer App can offer you!

What We Really Like About The Entertainer App

• The Entertainer App is really easy to use and it is extremely handy.

• Ability to share the product with family and friends. All they have to do is to download the app, sign in with the account holder’s login details, and they can access the offers from their device.

• Ability to track savings each time an offer is utilised. The Savings Calculator function also allows users to see just how quickly they redeem the cost of their Entertainer product, and how much they save throughout the year.

We were at the Gala Premiere of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 yesterday and we were absolutely blown away by the movie. With a running duration of 142 minutes [2 hours & 22 minutes], be sure to visit the washroom before the commencement of the movie so as to avoid missing out on the action.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is a 2014 American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character, “Spider-Man”. Directed by Marc Webb and released by Columbia Pictures, the movie serves as a sequel to the 2012 film, “The Amazing Spider-Man”. Filming took place in New York from February to June 2013 and the film is scheduled to be released in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on 1 May 2014 [Labour Day] in Singapore.

Movie Synopsis of The Amazing Spider-Man 2

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead. It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

Our Review of The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 brings movie-goers on an emotional roller-coaster ride so much so that you can almost feel the strong emotions and tragedy that Spider-Man has to go through while facing his toughest foe yet. Although we strongly dislike the sad ending, we were glad that the movie ended on a pretty inspirational note. We are definitely looking forward to the next sequel that will probably be released in 2016.

[Image Credits to Sony Pictures Singapore]

We will definitely recommend movie-goers to watch the movie in 3D because the 3D graphics and effects are extremely realistic. If you are booking your movie tickets in advance, be sure to choose the last 2 rows of seats in the center of the theatre for the best viewing experience.

Since the movie is set to be released on 1 May 2014 [Labour Day] in Singapore, you might probably want to organise a family-outing or a friends-gathering to the cinema and catch The Amazing Spider-Man 2. For the very emotional ones, do bring along a pack of tissue.

In case you’re wondering whether there are any teasers/trailers after the movie credits, no, there aren’t any; hence, you can leave the theatre right after the movie ends.
