Our Personal Opinion/Review of Singapore Motorshow 2015

After a 6-year hiatus, the Singapore Motorshow is back and I was really excited about it as I really wanted to get up close and personal with the many exciting new cars that were going to be launched. Every car at the Singapore Motorshow 2015 is different and they cater to different crowds. Whether you are a family-oriented driver, a track racer, a techie geek, a deliveryman, or even an environmental conservationist; there’s something for everyone at the Singapore Motorshow 2015!

Thanks to Clover Films Singapore, we had the privilege of attending the movie preview of, “The Taking Of Tiger Mountain” and though Jacqueline might disagree with me, I totally enjoyed the movie.

Movie Plot of The Taking Of Tiger Mountain

“The Taking Of Tiger Mountain” is adapted from the famous Chinese novel, “Tracks in the Snowy Forest” by Qu Bo, and it is set during the civil war era of 1946 when ruthless bandits occupied north-eastern China and threatened the lives of civilians.

The most powerful bandit of all was Mountain Eagle [acted by Tony Leung Ka-fai], with an impenetrable fortress up in Tiger Mountain and armed with strong artillery. Unit 203 of the People’s Liberation Army [PLA], led by Shao [Lin Gengxin], was crossing the north-eastern region when they encountered Eagle’s men raiding a village. Shao decided to stay and fight against Eagle.

PLA Headquarters sent a skilled investigator Yang [Zhang Hanyu], who infiltrated Eagle’s gang as an undercover. The duo [Yang & Shao] was soon engaged in a battle of wits with the cold-blooded Eagle, deep inside the snowy forest.

Our Personal Opinion/Review of The Taking Of Tiger Mountain

To begin with, “The Taking Of Tiger Mountain” is more likely to appeal to the gentlemen than the ladies. I personally like how the movie unfolded and to be honest, I would watch the movie a second time. Though certain scenes were rather over-exaggerated, “The Taking Of Tiger Mountain” is truly an epic movie that will delight fans of war films. In fact, movie-goers may even find “The Taking Of Tiger Mountain” to bear some resemblance to John Woo’s Red Cliff.

Though the “The Taking Of Tiger Mountain” is a Chinese movie, it is rather universal because every men who have served in an army infantry unit would definitely appreciate this movie and be amazed by the wits of the soldiers in the battlefield.

Rated NC-16 for violence, “The Taking Of Tiger Mountain” is definitely not a movie for the young and with a running duration of 2 hours and 21 minutes, be sure to visit the washroom before heading to the theatre hall.

Happy New Year 2015 Everyone!
Our movie review of Seventh Son is going to be our first blog post for this New Year and if you are planning to catch a movie today at the various cinemas, you might just want to check this out!

Thanks to the kind invitation by United International Pictures Singapore, we had the privilege to attend the sneak preview of Seventh Son before it was officially released on New Year’s Eve.

A fantasy film based on the novel, “The Spook’s Apprentice”, the story centers on Thomas Ward, a seventh son of a seventh son and his adventures as the apprentice of the Spook. The film is directed by Sergei Bodrov and stars Ben Barnes, Jeff Bridges, and Julianne Moore. It features music composed by Marco Beltrami.

Our Personal Opinion/Review of Seventh Son

Even though I have not read the novel, “The Spook’s Apprentice”, I totally enjoyed watching the film. While I am not sure how far the film deviated from the novel, I felt that the plot and story-telling of the film was coherent and fairly paced. Though I have to admit that the effects [I watched it in 3D] were sub-standard, Seventh Son is still a fairly entertaining movie for all ages. In fact, watching the film has definitely piqued my interest to go and read The Wardstone Chronicles by British Author, Joseph Delaney.

Whether or not there is a sequel to the Seventh Son film remains a mystery.

A mother. A daughter. 3 possible dads. And a trip down the aisle you’ll never forget!
MAMMA MIA!, the highly-anticipated musical inspired by the classic songs of ABBA, has been showing in Singapore since 13 November 2014 and they will be here till 14 December 2014! The show was last performed in Singapore in 2004 and following its huge success, MAMMA MIA! makes a welcome return after a decade.

MAMMA MIA! is Judy Craymer’s ingenious vision of staging the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs with an enchanting tale of family and friendship unfolding on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father, brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.

The narrative power of ABBA’s greatest hits including ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘Take A Chance On Me,’ and ‘The Winner Takes It All’ propels this charming story of love, laughter and friendship and 2014 marks the 40th Anniversary of ABBA’s Eurovision Song Contest win.

With music & lyrics by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus, MAMMA MIA! is written by Catherine Johnson, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast. The production is designed by Mark Thompson, with lighting design by Howard Harrison, sound design by Andrew Bruce & Bobby Aitken and musical supervision, additional material & arrangements by Martin Koch.

The International Tour is produced by Judy Craymer, Richard East, and Björn Ulvaeus for Littlestar in association with Universal, Stage Entertainment, and NGM. It is presented in Singapore by BASE Entertainment Asia, Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, and David Atkins Enterprises.

Our Personal Review/Opinion of MAMMA MIA!

MAMMA MIA! is definitely a musical that you must not miss! Throughout the entire musical, we were so absorbed that we just forgot about everything else and allowed ourselves to be enchanted by the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs.

We were also very privileged to have been given the opportunity for a backstage tour and we had an insightful time learning how the whole musical is put together every single show.

The Media also had an opportunity to learn some dance moves for the finale act from Jamie Wilkin, [Assistant Choreographer and Dance Captain for the MAMMA MIA! International Tour] during the backstage tour.

The props used in the musical are meticulously designed and bringing them to Singapore is a massive logistical task!

Not many people know that the audio and songs in the show are mixed live and there is a live band that plays the music.

From the backstage tour, we learnt that MAMMA MIA! is a musical that requires a lot of teamwork, coordination, and preparation by both the casts and crew members! Although the ticket prices may seem exorbitant, don’t be put off by it because MAMMA MIA! is definitely worth it! For the massive shipping of props, sweat, tears, energy and effort to put together this wonderful production, watching MAMMA MIA! should be in your bucket list of things-to-do in your lifetime!

We highly recommend you to catch MAMMA MIA! before the tickets run out and in our opinion, you should bring your parents or grandparents along too!

Last weekend, Jacqueline and I were graciously invited by the folks from Dolby Asia and The Influencer Network to catch The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 at the Cathay Cineplex [JEM] and we had an enjoyable time watching the movie.

Our Personal Review/Opinion of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

For all the fans of The Hunger Games trilogy, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is truly a movie not to be missed. In fact, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is so good that we really wouldn’t mind watching it a second time.

Though there weren’t much action scenes but probably more conversations than the previous movies, we felt that it was perfectly alright as Director Francis Lawrence might probably want to build up the plot in preparation for the release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 in November 2015.

[Image Credits to The Hunger Games Official Website]

As we caught The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 at the Cathay Digital Xtreme Theatre which features one of the largest Dolby Atmos installations in Singapore, we were expecting the sound to be realistic and multi-dimensional but those were quite evident in the Dolby Atmos show reels before the movie.

Short Video Clip Of How Dolby Atmos Works

However, having said that, we don’t deny the fact that some movie-goers might be able to notice the sound difference. As for us, we felt that the sound was crisp and clear. In certain scenes of the movie, the sound effects were pretty immersive and it made us feel like we were part of the movie.

If you are watching The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 at a Dolby Atmos Theatre, our recommendation is to go for the center seats in the middle of the theatre; this way, you will be well-positioned to receive the best sound experience.

Should you wish to replicate the Dolby Atmos movie experience, you will be pleased to know that it is also available for home theatre systems with the Onkyo Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers.

Movie Plot of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

Following her rescue from the devastating Quarter Quell, Katniss [Jennifer Lawrence] awakes in the complex beneath the supposedly destroyed District 13. Her home, District 12, has been reduced to rubble, and Peeta Mellark [Josh Hutcherson] is now the brainwashed captive of President Snow [Donald Sutherland]. At the same time, Katniss also learns about a secret rebellion spreading throughout all of Panem; a rebellion that will place her at the center of a plot to turn the tables on Snow.

I remember many years back, Angry Birds was like the hottest mobile game on planet Earth and my friends and I were trying to compete with one another to see who could score the most number of stars and points. Even I was not spared as I found myself addicted to the entertaining game as well.

If you are a fan of the Angry Birds game like I am, you would be delighted to know that the first Angry Birds Stella game is here!

In Angry Birds Stella, you will get to use these new characters who have amazing superpowers and there’s several new twists to the slingshot gameplay that we have all enjoyed in the Angry Birds franchise. Another cool feature in Angry Birds Stella is the scrapbook each player has where you collect achievements as you unlock different variations of the character.

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a professional gamer?
Well, local gamers had a glimpse of the exciting lives of professional gamers when they had the opportunity to interact with one of the world’s best and most recognised eSports team, Fnatic and watched Jonatan ‘Devilwalk’ Lundberg and Patrik ‘cArn’ Sättermon in action at the Micro-Star International Co. Ltd [MSI for short] Beat IT Pro-Gamer’s Gathering held at E2Max @ Cine yesterday.

MSI Beat IT Pro-Gamers’ Gathering is organised to offer budding local gamers an experience to learn about professional gaming and to hone their skills against the experts. Team Fnatic and MSI have been partners since 2009, and MSI, with the input from Fnatic´s professional players, have created some of the most exciting gaming notebooks and hardware components.

In a country where video games are a sizeable part of entertainment and relaxation, it is no surprise that the number of Singaporean pro-gamers has grown. In fact, our pro-gamers are beginning to clinch top prizes in gaming competitions around the world and they are earning a living out of their passion for gaming.

Can anyone be a professional gamer and is talent an integral component of how successful a gamer can be?

During the question and answer session with members of the media, Jonatan and Patrik agreed that anyone can be a professional gamer and talent in gaming is not a core ingredient to becoming a successful gamer. In fact, they said that it is due to their commitment and hard work in gaming that they have been able to become one of the best professional gamers in their field. In short, there is no shortcut to success and turning pro requires passion and at times, sacrifices. Jonatan and Patrik also encourage gamers to become better by interacting and surrounding themselves with other professional gamers who are better than them so that they can learn from them. Interacting with other professional gamers would also prevent pro-gamers-to-be from being stuck in a stagnancy crisis where they find no purpose and no personal growth and development in gaming.

Gamers at the event were also elated at the opportunity to try their hand at three different gaming features at the Live Demo area and the chance to win attractive prizes. Of course, this is nothing compared to the exclusive opportunity to play a game or two with ‘Devilwalk’, ‘cArn’ and other local professional gamers in a bracket-system tournament.

Personally, I remember myself frequenting LAN Gaming Shops in the early 2000s and back then, Counter-Strike, Half-Life, and Team Fortress were like the most popular games. Time may not be on my side to do some serious PC gaming but under the influence of my kids, I have started to try my hands on some games like Brave Frontier and League of Legends.

So are you ready to game on?

Check out MSI Singapore Official Facebook Page for some gaming gear that might help you up your game!

Both Jacqueline and I participated in the Hello Kitty Run Singapore yesterday and being a massive one-of-its-kind running event in Singapore, it saw 17,000 race participants decked out in a sea of red and white! Organised by Pink Apple Events, the Hello Kitty Run Singapore met with a couple of hiccups that sent away some pretty disappointed adults and children who did not manage to collect their race medals after the run.

Our Personal Opinion/Review About The Hello Kitty Run Singapore

Hello Kitty is the world’s most famous feline character and people all over the world are organising celebrations for Hello Kitty’s 40th birthday this year. Here in Singapore, the Hello Kitty Run Singapore was organised to celebrate Hello Kitty’s 40th birthday and because Hello Kitty is ever so popular, we have witnessed both the good and the ugly side of the Hello Kitty community.

So what’s this ugly side that we are talking about?

Well, this ugly side of people who are greedy and eager to make money and profit from everything and anything that has got to do with Hello Kitty! From the Hello Kitty Wishing Bone saga that we have personally witnessed at McDonald’s outlets in Singapore to physical fights between mature adults for Hello Kitty plush toys, these incidents were uncalled for and it tarnishes the reputation of the Hello Kitty community.

All over the Internet, we saw people putting the Finisher Medals for the Hello Kitty Run Singapore up for sale and the current black market rate is SGD$60 per medal. This is extremely ridiculous; considering the fact that some of these medals that are up for sale are stolen goods and some race participants took the opportunity to take advantage of the bad weather conditions to queue and re-queue for more medals. Furthermore, there was no control at the collection point and the organiser lacked foresight in this aspect.

Having participated in a couple of running events ourselves, once a finisher medal is issued out to a race participant upon completion of the run, the person issuing the finishing medal will make an indication or marking on the race participant’s race bib. Apparently, this was not done at the Hello Kitty Run Singapore, resulting in a chaotic situation that allowed greedy people to take advantage of this chaos and horde extra race medals that were meant for other race participants.

Totally ugly scene.

However, it is good news that Pink Apple Events will be issuing out medals to race participants whom have not collected their medals during the run. This would definitely increase the supply of the Hello Kitty race medal and thus, make the stolen race medal worthless for people to sell and profit from it. After all, the Hello Kitty race medal is just a collectible for all true blue Hello Kitty fans.

So, if you are a race participant and have yet to collect your race medal, don’t be in a hurry to buy it off the black market when it is supposed to be given to you for free. Just drop an email to info@hellokittyrun.com.sg and wait patiently. We believe all good things are worth waiting for.

Having said so much about the medals, we felt that the run could have been more organised. The wet weather contingency plan was inadequate for 17,000 race participants and although the Hello Kitty Run Singapore was meant to be a fun run, there should be an exclusive lane for families with young children in strollers. The race flag-off at Sentosa Gateway also proved to be a disaster for drivers as the re-routing caused massive traffic jams. Nearing the finishing line, we saw an ambulance trapped in a sea of race participants and despite it being a 5KM run, it was 3.48KM to be exact.

Although there were many negative points about the Hello Kitty Run Singapore, the only plus point that we could think about is, at certain checkpoints during the run, there were beautiful balloon sculptures, creative signages, and enthusiastic cheerleaders that spurred runners to complete the run. The Hello Kitty Beach Party after the race was also filled with a flurry of activities and there were ample opportunities for selfies and photography opportunities.

Should the Hello Kitty Run be organised in Singapore again?

Well, we say “Yes” as it allows the Hello Kitty community in Singapore to gather together and just enjoy a day out with one another. If the improvements and suggestions given by the race participants are taken into consideration, we are pretty confident that Pink Apple Events would do an even better job of organising this themed race in future because so far, they have done a pretty good job organising other races like the Energizer Night Trail Race.
