Last week, we sent two of our bravest champions, Jacqueline and Jasmine for the media preview of Sentosa Spooktacular 2014 and according to them, it was truly a spooky night as the entire 40,000 square metres of Fort Siloso was redeveloped into Spooktacular Village, Laddaland.

Situated along the coast of Sentosa, Fort Siloso is known for its rich background; from serving as Singapore’s coastal defence in the 1880s, to being a prison camp during the Japanese Occupation of World War II. Its historical background makes it an ideal location to stage an immersive real-life haunted village experience.

Each haunted house is themed after international hits by GTH such as Alone, Countdown and Laddaland, and their upcoming 2014 production, The Swimmers. Visitors can choose their preferred neighbourhoods and horror pathways, treading through 15 to 20 minutes of prolonged fear and suspense each time. With elements from the movies infused into various parts of the haunted Laddaland at Sentosa’s Spooktacular Village, one can expect a concoction of spine-chilling Asian folklore and out-of-this-world trepidations that will arrest all human senses.

Our Personal Review/Opinion of Sentosa Spooktacular

The Fort Siloso is a really apt place for hosting the Sentosa Spooktacular 2014 because of its many spooky tales. The ambience and atmosphere is very eerie and scary. The props and makeup of the scare actors were a little bit extreme but it was overall a thrilling good time.

If you are afraid of entering the haunted houses but would like to roam around the grounds of Laddaland, you can purchase the Kia Gui Pass that cost only SGD$16.60. If you suddenly feel brave enough to venture into the haunted house, you just have to top up an additional SGD$50.

However, having said all these, Sentosa Spooktacular 2014 is definitely not suitable for children aged 12 years and below. In fact, teenagers aged 13 to 15 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian aged 21 years and above. Sentosa Spooktacular 2014 is also not recommended for expectant mothers, and for anyone who suffers from heart disease, high blood pressure, major vertigo cases or claustrophobia.

For all you adrenaline junkies, get ready for a heart-stopping time! Standard Tickets will cost SGD$66.60 per person and they are on sale now for the following dates; 17, 18, 24, 25, 31 October and 1 November 2014!

As tickets are expected to sell out fast, do make your bookings quickly!

For more information and ticket purchase, do check out Sentosa Spooktacular Website and Sentosa Spooktacular Facebook Page.

Flying has always been a childhood dream for many, even for me. Although I have yet to earn my airborne wings, the very thought of flying has always send my adrenaline pumping.
Just 3 days ago, an opportunity to fly was presented to both Jacqueline and I, and we found ourselves at the iFly Singapore for a Christmas Party that was full of unexpected thrills and excitement.

Christmas Party with iFly Singapore!

After registering ourselves, we took a short tour around iFly Singapore and saw professional skydivers honing their stunts in the wind tunnel. From the outside, flying looks rather easy but we found out much later that it wasn’t when we were in the wind tunnel ourselves.

Truly, iFly Singapore has painstakingly taken all measures to ensure that guests will get the closest experience to an actual outdoor skydive. The interior wall features coupled together with the visual and sound effects certainly make the whole flying experience a very exciting and immersive one.

As safety is of paramount importance at iFly Singapore, you can be rest assured that professional skydiving instructors will be onsite to guide you through your flight.

Apart from attempting an indoor skydiving experience for the very first time, we had the rarest of opportunity to watch home-grown local indoor skydivers whom attempted to break new Guinness World Records for the most number of backward somersaults and the most number of two-way verticals; both done while flying mid-air!

12 Year Old Kyra Poh Attempting to Break the Guinness World Records for the Most Number of Backward Somersaults

We were also quite heartened to hear from Mr Lawrence Koh, Founder and Managing Director of iFly Singapore, that iFly Singapore will be conducting education programmes for schools in Singapore. Students will have the opportunity to learn about science, physics, aerodynamics and the mechanics of how the wind tunnel works, with the practical component done by flying in the wind tunnel. Because of the unique edutainment and sports elements in indoor skydiving, indoor skydiving is indeed an exhilarating sport for flyers of all ages and skill levels, and students will get to experience the sensation of skydiving from 12,000ft without the high cost and risks of jumping out of an airplane, in a safe environment.

Team Firefly Putting Up A Splendid Indoor Skydiving Performance For the Audience During the Christmas Party at iFly Singapore

On top of the education program, iFly Singapore also plans to develop this internationally recognised sport in Singapore through the Sports Education Programme so that students can become technically proficient with the sport. In addition to providing students with an unconventional healthy and educational activity, the iFly Singapore Sports Education Programme is also designed to identify and groom students into professional indoor skydivers. Those that display exceptional performance and are adept with the different highly skilled manoeuvres would have the opportunity to participate in the Indoor Skydiving Championships including quarterly competitions in Singapore and the Indoor Skydiving World Championships around the world.

At the Christmas party, iFly Singapore also launched the proFLYER membership packages to offer both the young and old the opportunity to pick up indoor skydiving in a progressive manner. The proFLYER packages come in two tiers [Basic and Premium], each providing interested indoor skydivers with the opportunity to plan with an iFly Singapore instructor a training schedule to guide them and help them best optimise time spent in the wind tunnel. The iFly Singapore flight instructors, certified by the International Bodyflight Association [IBA], can also assist flyers in monitoring their performance and provide the necessary onsite coaching to help indoor skydivers turn from novices to pros.

Since opening in 2011, iFly Singapore has hosted over 120,000 visitors and held the world’s first Indoor Skydiving World Championships in 2012. We will definitely be visiting iFly Singapore again to fly and if we can fly, so can you!

Head down to iFly Singapore this Christmas season!

Even snowman enjoys indoor skydiving at iFly Singapore.

Tip: It is better for you to pre-book your first flight experience with iFly Singapore Online rather than walking-in as flight slots are limited.

Yesterday, we were at The Walking Dead Zombie Pop Up Cafe that was specially constructed for the Race The Dead Running Event, Singapore’s first ever 5K Zombie Run, at Sentosa Siloso Beach and it was quite an intriguing experience.

If you’re wondering what’s on the menu, here it is! All the food and beverage items were specially prepared by the awesome crew from Kerbside Gourmet.

Of all the items that we have tried on the menu, we like Victim 13 Cupcake the best and apart from food, blood beverage was also served to over 5,000 survivors of the Race The Dead event.

Runners had a taste of what it felt like to be inside The Walking Dead, the hit-TV show that kicked off the zombie fever around the world.

Participants also flocked to take photos with zombies from The Walking Dead Zombie Pop Up Café, and capped off an exhausting day with an exclusive outdoor screening of the latest episodes from The Walking Dead Season 4, organised by SingTel mio TV and FOX Movies Premium.

As of the time of posting this blog entry, The Walking Dead Zombie Pop Up Café and the outdoor screening of The Walking Dead Season 4 are open to the public and if you are making your way down to Sentosa Island now, don’t forget to check them out at the Quarantine Carnival, Sentosa Siloso Beach!

To catch more of The Walking Dead fever, check out FOX Movies Premium HD [SingTel mio TV Channel 414] every Sunday at 10pm. There is also a free marathon of The Walking Dead Season 1-3 available on mio TV Video on Demand for all mio TV subscribers. Simply press the VOD button on your mio TV remote control and select the “Must Watch” option to begin.

Be ready to get zombified when you catch The Walking Dead Season 4!

Seriously, I’m never a fan of horror films and it is totally not my cup of tea. In fact, I have my own personal reasons for not watching horror movies or even going for horror trails but I do know of people whom enjoy this sort of stuffs and I totally respect and salute them for their courage and bravery.
As such, for all you thrill-seekers out there, I bring you great news and that is, for the first time ever, Sentosa will be teaming up with renowned Thai movie production studios, GMM Tai Hub Co. Ltd. [GTH], to jointly produce Sentosa’s annual signature Halloween event, the Sentosa Spooktacular.

[Image Credit to Sentosa Spooktacular Facebook Page]

If you don’t know, GTH is the creator of international horror hits such as Coming Soon, Shutter, Body, Dorm and Pee Mak, and I’m pretty sure most people would have at least caught one of GTH’s horror films. As for myself, I caught Shutter and it really scared the ____ out of me. With GTH coming onboard to co-produce the Sentosa Spooktacular 2013, GTH will bring their unique brand of storytelling that is deeply-rooted in Asian horror folklore to redefine this year’s edition of Sentosa Spooktacular.

The Sentosa Spooktacular 2013 is set to take place for six nights in October and November, and fans of classic Thai horror films can expect to have their nerves tested in up to five elaborately themed and haunted trails inspired by GTH’s internationally acclaimed films namely, Coming Soon, Shutter, Pee Mak, Dorm and Body. These trails will be held once again at Fort Siloso.

Just how spooky is Sentosa Spooktacular 2013 is going to be?

Find out what Mr Yongyoot Thongkongtoon, Senior Director of International Business for GTH, has to say, “Sentosa Spooktacular has been synonymous with Asia’s scariest fun and is one of the biggest Halloween events in Singapore. At GTH, we want people to experience the same terror, scares and a whole host of other emotions that are akin to watching a Thai horror movie. Our experienced team of directors, producers and set builders will use various storytelling techniques to capture the essence of Asian and Thai horror in these five trails. Together with the Sentosa team, GTH will ensure that this year’s Spooktacular will be one that visitors will never forget”.

[Image Credit to Sentosa Spooktacular Facebook Page]

Mr. Yongyoot Thongkongtoon’s cinematic experience include his role as producer in Thai horror hits Dorm (2006), Alone (2007), Body (2007), 4BIA (2008), Coming Soon (2008), and Phobia 2 (2009).

The collaboration with GTH will see an infusion of Thai horror popularized by recent Thai cinematography.

Beautiful Ghost wife ‘Nak’ from Pee Mak, vengeful sprits such as ‘Dararai’ from Body and ‘Netre’ from Shutter, will join arms with ‘Wichien’, the angry child spirit from Dorm, as well as the gruesome and iconic ‘Chaba’, who cursed and took the lives of movie goers in the frightful film, Coming Soon; in making their nether world crossover to Fort Siloso come October 2013.

The five will add to the line-up of Spooktacular’s famed resident ghoul ambassadors such as the Pontianak, the Chinese Ghost Bride, the Dead Soldier and the Chinese Vampire (Jiang Shi), who were successfully hired last year after their public displays and performances won over Sentosa Spooktacular’s organisers.

[Image Credit to Sentosa Spooktacular Facebook Page]

Together, these two groups of distinctively Asian supernaturals will come together to populate Fort Siloso and its five new Horror Trails for a fright fest filled with spine-chilling encounters of ‘spooktacular’ proportions.

[Image Credit to Sentosa Spooktacular Facebook Page]

If you want to play a part in scaring the ____ out of people, you can also participate in a video contest where the winner can stand a chance to be a talent at Spooktacular. What’s more, you can be shortlisted for an audition for a GTH movie too!

If you are interested, you are encouraged to show-off your acting chops by submitting video re-enactments of scenes from a choice of Thai horror films; Shutter, Pee Mak, Body, Dorm or Coming Soon. The contest will run via the specially designed Facebook App at: www.facebook.com/sentosa.spooktacular

All entries must be submitted by 31 July 2013. The top five entries will be selected based on a combination of public voting on the Sentosa Spooktacular Facebook page [50%] and judges’ decision [50%]. Public voting ends 31st July 2013 and interested participants and aspiring actors/actresses are encouraged to submit their entries early to secure as much votes as possible.

If you just want to be scared by others and live out a Thai horror film, tickets to Sentosa Spooktacular 2013 are on sale now and you can get them from Sentosa Spooktacular Website at http://www.spooktacular.com.sg or the Sentosa Ticketing Counters.

Thanks to Nikon Singapore, we had the opportunity to review the Nikon COOLPIX P520 compact camera and we brought it out to the Universal Studios Singapore at Resorts World Sentosa for some photography fun.
As you all probably know, parking at Resorts World Sentosa is really expensive and hence, we parked our car at Sentosa’s Beach Carpark and then boarded Sentosa Bus 1 which goes to Resorts World Sentosa. The other bus that also goes to Resorts World Sentosa is Sentosa Bus 2 and if you prefer taking the Sentosa Express Train, you can do so at the Waterfront Station.

In case you’re wondering how much parking at Sentosa’s Beach Carpark cost, it cost only $1 [after 5pm on weekdays] and our entrance to Sentosa was free as we have the Sentosa Islander Card.

Now, we are going to let the photos do the talking and the photos that you see in this entry are all taken with the Nikon COOLPIX P520 [unless otherwise indicated]:

Camera Performance

To be honest, we were quite disappointed with the way the photos turned out. We took more than a hundred shots and the photos in this entry are somewhat the best photos that we have taken with it. We’re not sure if we have pushed the camera to the extreme by trying out night shots but even some indoor shots didn’t quite meet our expectations.

Some of the indoor shots that we’ve taken:

Flowers from Far East Flora

From Nikon COOLPIX 2013

Sushi Platter from Sakae Sushi Restaurant

From Nikon COOLPIX 2013

Taking photos of moving subjects proved to be a really challenging task and most of the time, the photos turned out quite blurry. These could be due to the laggy shutter speed and autofocus system.

However, with that said, the 42x optical zoom range is mightily impressive and it allows you to shoot photos of subjects from afar. The flip-out rotating 3.2-inch LCD also allows you to take self-photos without much of a hassle. If you’re after a mega-zoom compact camera and you don’t really care about having additional features that you hardly will use, the Nikon COOLPIX P520 will work just fine as a point and shoot compact camera.

So what do you think of the Nikon COOLPIX P520?

If you’re interested, the Nikon COOLPIX P520 is available at all Nikon Authorised Dealers for $719 and for more information and updates, do check out Nikon Singapore’s Facebook Page as they have some exciting photography workshops coming up!
