I have been scaling the rock walls since 2002 and ever since my first climbing experience with the rock wall at Pulau Ubin Adventure Centre, I totally fell in love with the sport.
It was through climbing that I overcame my fear of heights and when I first started climbing, I had the impression that my strong arm power would get me to the top of the wall but I was wrong. I later learned that in order for me to climb faster and more efficiently, I have to make full use of my leg muscles as well.

I can still remember my first official rock-climbing competition in 2006 that was organised by the National Cadet Corps as part of the Annual Challenge Quest Competition and together with my fellow teammates, we conquered the walls as fast as we could and emerged as Champions for the rock-climbing competition. Even till today, I still climb and I will enjoy doing it for as long as I am able to.

Apart from rock-climbing, I was quite a sporty student and I participated in a couple of swimming and running competitions during my schooling days. Yes, I was even part of my school’s soccer team back then.

Today, things have certainly taken a turn and though I am now bogged down with work and probably tons of excuses, I still try to keep an active lifestyle by going for a 5-KM run once a week and participate in local running events.

As a matter of fact, both Jacqueline and I will be doing a 10-KM run on 26 April 2014 for RUN 350.

Now what about you?

Are you having a healthy and active lifestyle or have you been procrastinating too much to start on that gym workout?

Why not start the ball rolling by gathering some of your buddies and participate in the Community Games and Community Sports Festival 2014 where there are sports like Netball, Sepak Takraw, Netball, Table Tennis, Bowling, Badminton, and even Football!

The Community Games is a multi-sports competition held across the island, bringing the Games to the heart of the community and connecting residents of different ages, races and living across estates.

Organised by the People’s Association, Community Sports Club Council and Community Sports Clubs [with support from the National Sports Associations], the objectives of the Community Games are to develop a strong and inclusive sporting culture with passion and enthusiasm from all walks of life; and to enhance social cohesion and community bonding, linking people through mass participation and involvement.

Even if you are not into team sports like me, you can still be inspired by the stories of countless individuals whom have gotten into the habit of leading an active and healthy lifestyle!

To find out more about how you can participate in the Community Sports Festival 2014, do check out the Community Sports Festival’s Facebook Page and the Community Sports Festival’s Website!

Following up from our previous post about the Automated KONK® I Flying Insect Killer, we have been very satisfied with its usage but apart from the Automated KONK® I Flying Insect Starter Kit that we placed on top of our display shelf, we also have a KONK® I Handheld Flying Insect Killer that is really handy, portable, and convenient to use.
So far, we have used the KONK® I Handheld Flying Insect Killer in our car, bathroom, and even in the kitchen and the results of its effectiveness against common household pests has amazed us.

The bathroom is probably one of the cleanest place in the house but guess what, drain flies and fleas could probably be breeding in there and this is one problem that we have at home. We have tried using the KONK® I Handheld Flying Insect Killer in the bathroom for some time now and it has been rather effective though it only offers a temporary solution to the problem. The drain flies and fleas are pretty hardy and the KONK® I Handheld Flying Insect Killer will not instantly kill the drain flies and fleas. It was only after the next day that we found the drain flies and fleas in the sink and on the floor that we know that the KONK® I Handheld Flying Insect Killer has taken effect.

Some other places where we used the KONK® I Handheld Flying Insect Killer are our car and the kitchen. For those of you whom have the habit of eating and drinking while driving, you might occasionally find ants, lizards, and even baby cockroaches in your car. This is extremely freaky and so far, though we have not encountered any issues with pests in our car yet, we spammed the KONK® I Handheld Flying Insect Killer as a preventive measure to “debug” our car.

The last place where we used the KONK® I Handheld Flying Insect Killer was in our kitchen. Similar as the Automated KONK® I Flying Insect Starter Kit, the KONK® I Handheld Flying Insect Killer is safe to use even at food preparation areas. Here, the effect that the KONK® I Handheld Flying Insect Killer has on ants and houseflies is instantaneous.

Overall, we will highly recommend the KONK® I Handheld Flying Insect Killer if you are looking for an effective but safe and handy insecticide to use at home or even at your workplace. Hand spraying usually leaves about 90% of the amount sprayed as a residue and hence, it creates a barrier for insects.

If you are interested to purchase the KONK® I Handheld Flying Insect Killer, you can get it from Our Lifestyle Shop. Also, do check out and “like” Our Lifestyle Shop Facebook Page, and if you join their mailing list, you might just be one of the ten winners to win a 30-Day protect programme against dengue free of charge! The closing date is 20 April 2014 and winners will be contacted via post or email on 22 April 2014.

Last weekend, we learnt to swing like Tarzan and Jane at Forest Adventure and we had a swinging good time!

Located at Bedok Reservoir Park, Forest Adventure is the only Tree Top Course here in Singapore and they offer two types of courses; the Kids Course that is specially designed for children with a minimum height of 1.1m and ages 5 to 10 years old, and the Grand Course that is designed for visitors with a minimum height of 1.4m and whom are above the age of 11.

The Kids Course has 16 crossings and it finishes with one awesome zip line. Priced at SGD$32 per hour, the Kids Course is a fun and rewarding experience for every little adventurer. As children are attached to an on-going safety line which can only be detached when they reach the ground, they can swing in the trees in all safety! There’s no need to worry about having to hook up gears such as the carabiner as the friendly instructor is on site to assist your children!

Visitors can also plan for a Forest Adventure Birthday Party for their children.

As we are slightly too old for the Kids Course, we went for the Grand Course where we had to tackle 34 different obstacles including bridges, trapezes, logs, a leap of faith, and 4 giant zip lines that allowed us to fly over the scenic reservoir! Priced at SGD$44 per adult, the Grand Course offers 2.5 hours of exhilarating fun in the trees!

What We Like About Forest Adventure:

1. When journeying from Site 1 to Site 4 on the Grand Course, the level of difficulty is progressive and it builds up the confidence of visitors from site to site. The most challenging and the most scary obstacle would probably be the leap of faith at Site 4 as visitors will experience a 2 second freefall.

2. Visitors can take their time to journey from site to site and they are free to roam around the Tree Top Course. Once up, there’s no way down and visitors will have to pluck up their courage to conquer all the obstacles. This helps to instill confidence in the visitors and although there are no instructors up on the course, there will be instructors on the ground whom will be there to give help and moral support.

3. As safety is a top priority at Forest Adventure, every visitor will have to go through a thorough 30 minutes safety briefing and the instructors on the ground will check on the visitor’s helmet, harness, and equipment before allowing them to go up on the Tree Top Course.

Important Points to Note:

1. For safety reasons, visitor who weigh more than 130KG are not allowed to go up on the Tree Top Course and visitors whom are under the age of 18 will have to be accompanied by a participating adult whom must be above the age of 21.

2. If you want to take pictures of yourself up on the Tree Top Course, you can bring along a compact camera but make sure it comes with a strap and that it is well protected as you do not want fine sand to scratch your camera lens or go into your mobile devices. GoPro Cameras are best suited for this kinda adventure-related activity.

3. For maximum comfort up on the Tree Top Course, bring along a bandana so that you can wear it under your helmet and as for your attire, wear a comfy light-coloured t-shirt with track pants. Hand gloves would also come in handy and we highly recommend it.

The Grand Course at Forest Adventure is open every day except Monday from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm and the last available slot would be at 4.30 pm. As for the Kids Course, it is only open during the weekends and school and public holidays from 10 am to 6 pm. The last available slot would be at 5.00 pm. However, Forest Adventure will take bookings for the Kids Course with a minimum of 20 children during the weekdays and if you are thinking of bringing your children down for some fun, do check with Forest Adventure about the availability.

Forest Adventure is located inside Bedok Reservoir Park and if you park your vehicle at the Bedok Reservoir Park Carpark A, Forest Adventure is about 10 minutes walking distance.

We really enjoyed our time at Forest Adventure and yes, we will definitely be back for more!

To make your Forest Adventure booking, do visit Forest Adventure Official Website and if you have a Facebook Account, do “like” the Forest Adventure Facebook Page to be kept updated with their latest happenings and promotions!

There are really no permanent solutions to getting rid of common pesky household pests because if there are, companies providing pest control services would be out of business and supermarkets would not have to sell us insecticides any more.

Now, we don’t fancy cockroaches and we absolutely hate them, especially the flying ones. Other pesky insects like ants and flies can also be quite irritating at times but they are not as bad as cockroaches. We are either not a fan of insects or we just have problems getting along with them. In fact, they are also the reason why we would viciously spray tons of insecticide in our bedroom, kitchen, and even in the bathroom!

One fact of life remains, spraying insecticide is only a temporary solution; and to be honest, the smell of the insecticide is a major turn-off and can cause breathing problems or insecticide poisoning.

What if we tell you that we have just discovered a fuss-free solution to keep those pesky pests away without having to suffer from the harmful toxins of off-the-shelves insecticides?

Would you believe us?

Recently, we were approached by a local Singapore company, Ramroy Private Limited, to review a particular brand of natural insecticide and we found it quite intriguing.

Why intriguing?

It is intriguing because the insecticide, the KONK® I Flying Insect Killer is au naturel.

KONK® I Flying Insect Killer is made in the USA and its main ingredient, Pyrethrin, is a natural extract from the chrysanthemum flower. It acts as a natural deterrent and when used, creates an effective and protective barrier against flying and crawling insects such as mosquitoes, house flies, fruit flies, and ants. It even repels cockroaches!

We were given the KONK® I Flying Insect Killer [an insecticide] and an AirGuard Dispenser that will automatically dispense the insecticide at regular intervals, 24 hours a day, and it can protect up to 170 cubic metres of space.

To test the effectiveness of the AirGuard Dispenser with the KONK® I Flying Insect Killer installed in it, we have placed the AirGuard Dispenser on top of a shelf facing our bed.

Basis for Experiment:

Mosquitoes frequent our bedroom at night and they cause a lot of mosquito bites on our hands and legs. By placing the AirGuard Dispenser at a height level of 1.8-1.9 metres, we are hoping that the mosquitoes will be totally eliminated from our bedroom once and for all for the next 30 days.

While the experiment is underway, we will be putting up our findings sometime next month and if you can’t wait for our findings [probably because you are in a dire situation to get rid of pesky pests], we suggest that you get the Automated KONK® I Flying Insect Starter Kit at SGD$159 from Our Lifestyle Shop.

If you need more information about KONK® and its related products, we highly recommend that you “like” Our Lifestyle Shop Facebook Page and who knows, you might just be 1 of the 10 lucky winners whom will stand to win a 30-Day protect programme against dengue. In our upcoming blog entries on the same topic, we will be sharing with you about the KONK® 1 Handheld Flying Insect Killer and also our reviews about the insecticide products that we have tried so do keep a lookout for that!

You can now say, “No!” to pesky pests with confidence and convenience!

As such, the product is completely safe and does not cause any side effects; unlike glucosamine and calcium oral supplements which may cause gastric problems, cardiovascular risks, and kidney stones.

Review Of The URAH® Bone Health 10% Glucosamine + Bio-Calcium Cream:

I was recently given a sample of the URAH® Bone Health 10% Glucosamine + Bio-Calcium Cream and having used it for a month now, I will highly recommend the product for elderly and adults whom are currently experiencing joint and bone pain.

For me, I frequently apply the URAH® Bone Health 10% Glucosamine + Bio-Calcium Cream [about 2 to 3 times daily] on my left wrist [due to an injury that I sustain during National Service] and also on both my knees [I am a frequent runner]. After applying the URAH® Bone Health 10% Glucosamine + Bio-Calcium Cream for about a month now, I have not experience any joint or bone pain whenever I engage in intensive exercises such as running and weights-lifting. Hopefully, it will keep that way and not give me any more problems in future.

Also, I personally find that the URAH® Bone Health 10% Glucosamine + Bio-Calcium Cream has a pleasant smell and because it fully permeate through the skin, it helps to deliver glucosamine and bio-calcium completely and effectively into the blood, leaving no residue on the skin.

The URAH® Bone Health 10% Glucosamine + Bio-Calcium Cream is the only glucosamine cream in Singapore that has been put through clinical tests for effectiveness and many hospitals and clinics are now increasingly recommending it due to its unique delivery system.

Priced at SGD$45 each, the URAH® Bone Health 10% Glucosamine + Bio-Calcium Cream is available at Watsons, Guardian Health & Beauty, NTUC Unity Healthcare, and as well as all major hospitals and general clinics in Singapore.

Anyone can use the URAH® Bone Health 10% Glucosamine + Bio-Calcium Cream and even upon recovery, you can still continue to use it to maintain healthy joints and bone!

From now till 31st March 2014, Watsons and Guardian Health & Beauty are offering the URAH® Bone Health 10% Glucosamine + Bio-Calcium cream at a promotional price of SGD$35 each. If you intend to buy more for yourself and for your family members as well, NTUC Unity Healthcare is offering the URAH® Bone Health 10% Glucosamine + Bio-Calcium Cream at a promotional price of SGD$60 for two! Now, that’s really value for money!

Do remember to use the URAH® Bone Health 10% Glucosamine + Bio-Calcium Cream often as it has an expiry date of 3 months once the seal is opened!

Live Well & Lead A Winsome Life!

We were recently given some samples of Viva La Papa!’s exotic snack chips and we really love it to bits! Available in 5 different flavours, the chips are all natural and gluten free. The best part is, they contain no transfat and artificial addictives.

With my current diet regime which consist of a banana, a cup of ice-milo, and a kiwifruit for breakfast and lunch, the hunger pangs would sometimes set in and cause me to have cravings for some savoury snacks. Hence, this is where chips can come in handy to last me through to dinner time.

However, as we all would probably know, chips such as Ruffles, Lay’s, and Pringles [just to name a few], are often loaded with calories and artificial flavouring but with Viva La Papa!, you can be rest assured that the chips are of the highest quality.

The 5 different flavours of potato chips that Viva La Papa! has to offer are Andean Pink Salt Potato Chips, Anticucho BBQ Potato Chips, Chillies & Lime Potato Chips, Exotic Sweet Potato Chips, and Andean Native Potato Chips. Having tried all 5 different flavours, I really like all of them because each of the different flavours have unique tastes that can cater to everyone.

Andean Pink Salt Potato Chips

If you’re the salty kind of person whom enjoys healthy savoury snacks, the Andean Pink Salt Potato Chips would best suit you.

Anticucho BBQ Potato Chips

Fans of BBQ chips would definitely love this one because the smoky BBQ taste of the chips is so aromatic and flavourful.

Chillies & Lime Potato Chips

The Chillies & Lime Potato Chips are not really that spicy and it has a taste that is quite similar to Thai Chilli Sauce. Spicy, sweet, and sour, the Chillies & Lime Potato Chips definitely tickles the tongue.

Exotic Sweet Potato Chips

If you’re still not convinced that potato chips can be healthy, you definitely should go for the Exotic Sweet Potato Chips. We highly recommend the Exotic Sweet Potato Chips for the health enthusiasts whom want to shed some weight.

Andean Native Potato Chips

For that really authentic Peruvian taste, you should definitely go for the Andean Native Potato Chips.

Viva La Papa! selects the most delicious and sustainable varieties of native potatoes and other roots for their hand-cooked chips. The potato originated in Perú thousands of years ago, and hundreds of colourful and nutritious varieties are grown by Andean communities to this day.

Viva La Papa!’s chips are packed in stunning packaging that features classic textile colours and lively Andean locals. Cooked by hand in small batches with no artificial ingredients or genetically modified organisms, the product range is also gluten free and Kosher accredited.

Available in 142g and 42g bags through Le Bono Collection in Singapore, Viva La Papa!’s chips are also available at Real Food. Café. Grocer Books, SPR MRKT, Swiss Butchery, and The American Club.

Also for every bag of chips that are sold, Viva La Papa! makes a contribution to the Andean children’s charity, Amantani. This wonderful organisation provides schools and boarding houses for under-privileged children in remote Andean regions.

Now, not only can you eat healthily, you will also contribute to making life better for the under-privileged children in remote Andean regions! 🙂

Go for some Viva La Papa! Potato Chips now!

The 12th Singapore Canoe Marathon ended today amidst several firsts. Organised for the first time in the heartlands at Anchorvale Community Club since its inception in 1999, it also introduced an inaugural fun race, which attracted over 100 participants of all ages and raised S$40,000 for the para-canoeing community.

Co-organisers Singapore Canoe Federation [SCF] and People’s Association [PA] Water-Venture also organised try-out sessions along the Punggol Waterway for the community to learn the sport from Team Singapore athletes and bond with families and friends at the same time.

Mr Ang Hak Seng (BBM), Chief Executive Director of People’s Association, who participated in the fun race said, “Canoeing has become more accessible with this new location and the introduction of the fun race. Through our efforts, we hope to offer families and friends an additional lifestyle option for them to bond, have fun and enjoy our beautiful waterways.”

In a strong show of support towards the para-canoeing community, the event saw Mr Tan Chuan Jin, Acting Minister for Manpower and Adviser to Marine Parade GRC Grassroots Organisations, Mr Desmond Lee, Minister of State for National Development and Adviser to the SCF and Jurong GRC Grassroots Organisations, and Mr Nicholas Fang, Nominated Member of Parliament, teaming up with an athlete each from Team Singapore Canoeing and staff from the PA to paddle a total of 40km for a good cause.

For every metre paddled by them, a group of donors pledged a dollar to fund the development of a para-canoeing programme which will be administered by the SCF. This programme will enable athletes with physical disabilities to enjoy the sport by sponsoring the purchase of their equipment such as specially modified kayaks.

A potential beneficiary of the programme is Mr Tan Hun Boon, who has been canoeing for a year. He said, “Canoeing is a demanding sport. Through paddling, we constantly challenge ourselves to improve every session. This is something people of all physical capabilities can identify with. We are really grateful to the Singapore Canoe Federation, PA Water-Venture and all donors for their continued support for our passion.”

“We are delighted to be able to contribute in this way to the development of the para-canoeing programme. This is a very good cause, as sports is a very powerful enabler. It is also very heartening to see the community actively contributing, participating and giving back,” said Mr Desmond Lee, after paddling 10km along Punggol Waterway.

On top of the fun race and the public try-outs, a total of 600 participants also took part in the one day canoeing competition that was organised across four different categories. It definitely was a fruitful and meaningful day for all the participants whom participated in the event at the Punggol Waterway.

As our new home is situated near the Punggol Waterway, both Jacqueline and I are pretty excited about moving in next year and we certainly look forward to participating in more activities organised at the Punggol Waterway.

Two Sundays ago, we had the privilege of participating in a NERF Community Challenge that was organised by Bishan Community Club [CC] and it was a very tiresome affair [at least for me]. Having not kept my physical fitness up to par, the NERF Community Challenge was indeed challenging but exhilarating.

All participants had to form teams of three and everyone battled it out, displaying fortitude, agility, and teamwork in two exciting categories; the Family Tournament, for participants between the ages of 8 to 55; and the Youth Tournament, for participants aged 15 to 35.

Who says the young ones can’t keep up with the older ones!

Each intense match lasted a total of ten minutes and the team that amassed the most number of points by planting their team’s flag at the opponent’s home base advanced to the next round.

In order to plant the flag, teams must first obtain the license by shooting it down before they can plant the flag.

The blasters used during the tournament were the Nerf Elite Strongarm, the Nerf Elite Rough Cut 2×4, and the Nerf Firestrike. All blasters and Dart Tag darts were provided for by the event organiser.

Teams who participated in either categories stood the chance to walk away with a NERF RapidStrike. The other participating teams also walked away with vouchers from Starbucks, one of Bishan CC’s newest tenants.

Check out a short video of the NERF Community Challenge that I participated at Bishan Community Club

Truly, NERF is fast becoming a community and social activity as seen at the launch of the new Bishan CC. It is not only a healthy activity, but one in which families and friends can be active and have fun at the same time. To be honest, I do have plans to organise a NERF War soon and it will be a format that is somewhat similar to the one that I played at Bishan Community Club.

If you’re still thinking of some really unique ideas for a Christmas Party, why not consider hosting your own NERF Christmas Party? All you have to do is find a big space, gather some boxes to use as covers for protection, rally your friends, and buy some NERF blasters for a NERF-ing good time!

Question is, do you have the NERF for it? 🙂

For more information about NERF, do check out Hasbro Singapore’s Website!
