Do you know that Panasonic has an indoor agriculture farm here in Singapore that cultivates premium Japanese crop varieties via a controlled soil-based and pesticide-free environment with LED lighting?

The 248 square metre indoor agriculture facility currently produces 10 types of vegetables; green and red leafy lettuce, mizuna [potherb mustard], mini red and white radish, rocket lettuce, basil, ooba [mint herb], mitsuba [wild parsley] and baby spinach. Both leafy and root vegetables are cultivated in the controlled soil-based environment with LED lighting. At present, total production capacity is at 3.6 tonnes annually. Through this local indoor cultivation, consumers like you and us can potentially gain significant savings compared to purchasing similar premium Japanese produce that are imported.

Panasonic is strengthening its research and development efforts to accelerate harvest such as increasing shelf capacity [vertical farming], shortening cultivation lead time from 35 days to 28 days, improving area productivity and expanding crop variety. By 2016, Panasonic is looking to grow more than 30 crop varieties.

In land scarce Singapore where only 8% of vegetables consumed are grown in local farms, Panasonic aims to contribute to the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority’s [AVA] vision of raising self-sufficiency level for leafy vegetables through its technology and harvest. Panasonic also hopes that the indoor vegetable farm can provide a better life and a better world through improved food quality.

As of now, the produce from Panasonic’s indoor agriculture farm is not commercially available but Panasonic will assess market demand for commercial expansion to restaurants and supermarkets within this fiscal year.

Currently, Panasonic supplies on average, 0.3 tonnes of vegetables to all three Ootoya outlets in Singapore per month.

If you are interested to find out how the fresh, crunchy, and pesticide-free Japanese produce from Panasonic’s indoor taste agriculture farm tastes like, all you have to do is head down to any Ootoya Japanese Restaurants and order their new salad offerings.

Our Personal Opinion of Ootoya Japanese Restaurant’s New Salad Offerings

A few days ago, we were at Ootoya Japanese Restaurant [Orchard Central] for a media tasting session and we had a really refreshing time indulging in the crunchy and fresh vegetables from Panasonic’s indoor agricultural farm. The vegetables are delivered fresh from Panasonic’s indoor agriculture farm to Ootoya restaurants daily, ensuring that the quality of harvest is maintained.

If you ask us if there are any difference in terms of taste and quality of the fresh produce from Panasonic’s indoor agriculture farm and those from the conventional farms, we felt that there wasn’t much difference except that the produce from Panasonic’s indoor agriculture farm are much fresher and really crunchy.

We felt that the new salad offerings from Ootoya Japanese Restaurant are really wholesome and relatively affordable. Drizzled with Ootoya Japanese Restaurant’s homemade sauce, the salads make a perfect appetizer for a healthy and nutritious meal.

And if you’re a meat eater, you don’t want to miss out on the Ootoya Japanese Restaurant’s Grilled Pork Belly!

From now till 30 September 2014, you can enjoy a complimentary Kirin Draft Beer OR Dessert with purchase of any main course at any of the 3 Ootoya Japanese Restaurant. All you have to do is just flash this coupon!

On a last note, we have been wanting to grow our own vegetable produce at home and recently, we embarked on a mini project to grow our very own cherry tomatoes and sunflowers. We’re still in the beginning stage of the cultivation process and we are glad that the baby cotyledon leaves have started to surface.

Looks like it will be weeks before we get to enjoy the fruits of our labour and we can’t wait!

Happy Weekends!

Juventus FC or Singapore?

A few weekends ago, I completed the 4th and final leg of the Reservoir Discovery Series [RDS] that was organised by the People’s Association [PA] Water-Venture and I had an enjoyable time with other fellow kayakers.

The final leg of the RDS took place at Kallang and the journey that we had to kayak was 10KM in total. From the PA Water-Venture Centre at Kallang, we kayaked to different checkpoints such as the Singapore Sports Hub, Gardens By The Bay, and had numerous opportunities for some awesome photographs with the city skyline as the backdrop.

The advantage of kayaking in the reservoirs is that the waters are relatively clean and you need not worry about getting saltwater into your eyes. Also, the waters in the reservoir are quite calm and easy to kayak without needing much force; unlike in the sea waters where you have to paddle against strong tidal waves.

If you are new to kayaking and would like to explore it as a new hobby or sport, the RDS is very suitable because the pace is slow and the distance is manageable. The kayaking route is sub-divided into various checkpoints so that kayakers can take a breather to hydrate themselves and appreciate the beautiful scenery.

Safety is a top priority at RDS and great care is exercised by the instructors to ensure that the kayakers are paddling safely. In fact, a safety and conducting brief is done prior to the activity so that all participants are aware of the kayaking route and the safety measures in place.

Since we were kayaking on the day that the National Day Parade Rehearsal was taking place, we had a glimpse of the canons that were used for the 21-gun salute.

The RDS is frequently organised by PA Water-Venture and if you would like to find out more about the programmes and activities that PA Water-Venture is organising, do “like” PA Water-Venture’s Facebook Page!

Lastly, don’t worry if you are enrolling for the RDS alone. You will be paired up with another kayaker and you will get to meet new friends like I did!

Happy Kayaking Everyone!

As you know, soccer season is upon us and it’s time for the biggest matches to commence! Our favourite football club is, as most of you would probably know, Liverpool, but this time round, it’s bigger than just the clubs; we’ll be rooting for Germany to win!
To get our blog into the mood for the coming month, here are 5 things that we’re definitely looking forward to this football season:

  1. The Atmosphere

The timing of the matches for this year is set to be more irregular, with the group stage matches all occurring earliest at midnight in Singapore. Thus, the usual places such as Clarke Quay will be quiet, with a number of bars not opening past their normal operating hours. There’s still hope to catch some of that football fever though, sites like TimeOut Singapore have listed great places to go absorb the lively atmosphere, watch the match, and have some good beer grub at the same time!

  1. Social Gatherings

What better way to use this opportunity to invite your friends over or go over to a friend’s place and have some bonding time? Whether you’re a soccer fan or not, it’s a good excuse to catch up with your buddies by having a house party.

  1. Hot bods to look out for

Footballers and WAGs. Who said you had to pick a Top 10 list of all the hottest footballers on the planet? With the best footballers congregating on screen for your viewing pleasure, you won’t be short of eye candy for the next 25 days!

  1. Winning Bets

While the detriments of gambling should always be emphasized, it’s always fun to have a friendly wager (or three) on who’s going to win that next match with your best buds . It certainly adds to the excitement of watching eleven men chasing a ball on a field, doesn’t it?

  1. The Beautiful Game

The term ‘Beautiful Game’ was first said to be used by legendary footballer Pelé, and truly it’s the accessibility of football; how easy it is to pick up, understand, and play.  Football definitely unites people and transcends differences. Even if you’ve friends who aren’t soccer fans, chances are they won’t mind catching a match or two as a get-together!

And if you’re hosting your friends to come over your place and watch the World Cup 2014, here’s 5 things you should stock up in your fridge!

1. Beer

Studies have shown that consuming everyone’s favourite fermented beverage in moderation can lower your risk of stroke; but it’s okay to go slightly above moderation on occasion when you’re celebrating the win of the country you’re supporting! Be sure to stock up your fridge with ample supply for you and your friends!

2. Hummus

Simply because everything goes with it. Hummus makes for a perfect dip, and is delicious with pretzels, pita bread red peppers, carrots, you name it! An easy crowd pleaser with crackers for the gatherings of 15 hungry people in your house watching the next big game. Need we say more? More reasons to have more hummus here.

3. Salsa and Tortilla Chips

A quick hack to making a wholesome salsa dip is to buy a batch of chunky salsa, and then making it even heartier by adding in more fresh ingredients like chopped fresh tomatoes, onions, and chilies. Don’t forget the corn chips too – salsa is only complete with you dip some tortilla chips in and savour the chunky sauce with crunchy chips.

4. BRAND’S® Essence of Chicken

As an all-natural health food supplement, BRAND’S® Essence of Chicken can help reduce stress levels and contribute to a relaxed mood. It also increases mental concentration, improves short-term memory and immunity, alleviates task-induced stress, increases metabolic rate, and boost energy. Perfect as a pick-me-up and vitality booster in this season of late nights! This will definitely come in handy if you have to go back to work the next day.

5. Cheese Sticks

Not only do they taste great, but they come individually wrapped. It really doesn’t get more convenient than that! Also, if you’re feeling up to a bit more preparation, fried mozzarella cheese sticks are always a party favourite.

Psst, in collaboration with BRAND’S, we will be running 3 separate contests for all you readers and in total, there will be more than SGD$300 worth of BRAND’S Products and SGD$350 worth of Takashimaya Vouchers to be won!

To get you started, the first contest will be taking place from 16 June 2014 to 22 June 2014 and we will be releasing the details for the contests on 15 June 2014 so do keep a look out for it!

Stay tuned to us and Game On!

We’re almost less than 4 days away from a crazy 25 days of non-stop football action, and the countdown has begun! To commemorate this, let’s have a look at 5 of the players that we’ll definitely be looking out for as they will be playing a big part in their country’s role to win the much coveted World Cup:

  1. Lionel Messi (Argentina)

At just 26, Messi is a four-time World Player of the Year and is arguably one of the most outstanding players over the past five years. If Argentina wins the World Cup this year and Messi has the influence that he so often has at club level, then he would surely be elevated to the status of Maradona and Pele, among the greatest we’ve ever seen.

  1. Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

Everybody knows who he is; Cristiano Ronaldo is now perhaps, alongside Lionel Messi and David Beckham, the best-known player on the planet. The Portugal captain is also the 2013 winner of the FIFA Ballon d’Or, and has also won the Champions League with Real Madrid. Scoring 55 goals in just 45 appearances for club and country in 2013-14, a large part of his country’s hopes for winning rest upon his shoulders.

  1. Neymar (Brazil)

[Image Credits to All About FC Barcelona]

Born on February 5, 1992, in São Paulo, Brazil, Neymar drew attention for his impressive soccer abilities at an early age. His small frame masks incredible skill and speed, silencing doubters with his top-class ability to finish off both feet

  1. Mesut Ozil (Germany)

Arsenal attacking midfielder Ozil is only 25, but his finesse and skills has already been compared to football legends. Former manager José Mourinho likened him to Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane, massive shoes which he has no trouble filling.

  1. Andres Iniesta (Spain)

With recent rumors of links to Manchester United, 29-year-old Iniesta is a beast on midfield, and is even hailed by fellow superstar Xavi as “Spain’s most complete player.” Known for his passing, dribbling, vision and movement, he is definitely a player to watch on the Spanish team, and in fact even the whole tournament.

So which player will you look out for in the World Cup and who do you think will win the World Cup 2014 this year?

Recently, we had the opportunity to participate in the PA Water-Venture’s Reservoir Discovery Series and we had such an extremely unique experience that we just could not wait to rave about it.

The People’s Association Water Venture [PA Water-Venture] Reservoir Discovery Series [RDS] is an annual kayaking series which provides a recreational platform for those with no kayaking certification or kayaking experience to pick up the sport and gain water confidence along the way.

Back for its third instalment, RDS 2014 will feature four kayaking trips at four different reservoirs each week from 17 May 2014 to 28 June 2014.

5km paddle at Jurong Lake, 17 May 2014, Completed
6km paddle at Punggol Waterway, 31 May 2014, Still Available for Sign-Up
8km paddle at Lower Seletar, 14 June 2014, Still Available for Sign-Up
10km finale at Kallang River, 28 June 2014, Still Available for Sign-Up

Being a seasoned kayaker ourselves [we have previously done a Round Island Kayaking Expedition with the National Cadet Corps a decade ago], we daresay that the RDS is relatively simple for anyone whom has absolutely zero kayaking experience. Even though the distance to kayak might seem a little bit intimidating at first, the pace at which the whole kayaking session is being carried out is relatively manageable.

Furthermore, the waters at the reservoir is relatively calm with little disturbance and hence allows beginners to kayak smoothly. Just in case you are wondering, the RDS is also suitable for children. The minimum age for the RDS is 10 years old, as of 1 Jan 2014 and the child must be accompanied by an adult at all times and shall put on a personal floatation device that is of good fit while on the water.

We participated in the first leg of the RDS at Jurong Lake and the distance that we had to kayak was 5 kilometres [KM]. There, we got to enjoy the scenic sights and we also learnt about the history of the Jurong Lake.

Yup, we saw a giant lizard feeding on its prey.

We also saw birds nesting in the trees.

We had the rare opportunity to kayak in the waters at the Chinese Garden and Japanese Garden.

The upcoming second leg of the RDS will be taking place at the Punggol Waterway this Saturday, 31 May 2014, from 0930am to 1230pm and if you are interested to participate, do sign up early as vacancies are limited!

You can register for the RDS via https://one.pa.gov.sg/ and search for “Reservoir Discovery Series” under “Activity”.

If you are a Passion Card Member, you are entitled to a 5% discount off the public rate. Upon completion of each leg of the RDS, you will also receive a finisher medal.

The great outdoors and scenic kayaking routes will be a fun and exciting time for you to bond with your family and friends and the calm reservoir waters will also provide an excellent opportunity for you to pick up a new sport and practice the basic techniques of kayaking.

As for us, we will be participating in the third and last leg of the RDS and if you happen to be there, say “hi” to us and smile for our camera!

Till we meet our kayak again!

Last weekend, the Marina Bay came alive with a showcase of Asia’s vibrancy, energy, and dynamism at the DBS Marina Regatta 2014.
Dubbed as Singapore’s biggest water sports festival, the DBS Marina Regatta 2014 attracted more than 2,000 athletes from 140 dragon-boating teams from around the region, including top national teams from Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Thailand.

Despite the heavy downpour, it did not dampen the atmosphere at the DBS Marina Regatta 2014 and the two-day event attracted more than 10,000 spectators; with the event coming to a sparkling end with a display of fireworks and LED dragon kites against the skyline of Marina Bay.

Everyone whom were at the DBS Marina Regatta were treated to an intense race as the competitors gave in their best and rowed in unison to reach the finishing line in the shortest time possible.

Thailand’s National Women’s and Men’s Teams were crowned the new overall champions of the International Premier Women and International Premier Open categories. Indonesia and The Philippines were runners-up in the International Premier Open and International Premier Women’s categories respectively.

Apart from enjoying the dragon boat races, members of the public were also treated to performances at the Asia Cosplay Meet, the largest of its kind in Asia.

Highlights of the meet included a special guest appearance by Japanese Cosplay icon Kaname, and the Asia Cosplay Meet Grandwalk which saw more than 50 cosplayers from China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore participating in a parade down the Marina Bay promenade.

Team Philippines was named Asia’s finest cosplayer in the competition segment.

Ten percussion groups also took to the stage to battle it out for the grand prize of SGD$5,000 in the Asian Drum Challenge open category. The winning team was from Ova Formula, and Republic Polytechnic was named the schools category champion.

There was indeed something for everyone at the DBS Marina Regatta 2014 and if it takes place again next year, you should come and join in the fun!

Whether it is for health reasons or personal preferences, our society has become more sophisticated in our appetite for healthier food. In the past, consumers like you and I would buy and eat whatever that satisfies our stomachs, but in recent times, we do not just look out for food that has lower calories and cholesterol, but also food that has low gluten, low Glycemic Index, and other facets of nutrition.
One such growing trend is the consumption of food products that contain sprouted grains.

What Are Sprouted Grains?

Grains are the seeds of certain plants, largely cereal grasses. Like all seeds, grain kernels are a marvel of nature, containing the potential of a whole new plant, patiently waiting its turn in the sun.

All three edible parts of the whole grain; the germ, endosperm, and bran, are crucial to creating the new plant. The germ is the plant embryo, which, when it grows, will feed on the starchy endosperm. The bran layers provide some additional nutrients and along with the inedible husk found on many grains, help protect the grain seed until it’s ready to start the growth cycle.

Structure Of A Wheat Grain

Until then, the seed counts on certain built-in growth inhibitors to keep it from germinating until temperature and moisture conditions are just right. Then, once sprouting starts, enzyme activity wipes out these growth inhibitors and transforms the long-term-storage starch of the endosperm to simpler molecules that are easily digested by the growing plant embryo.

The Sprouting Process

Just as the baby plant finds these enzyme-activated simple molecules easier to digest, so too may some people. The sprouting process apparently increases the amount and bio-availability of some vitamins [notably Vitamin C] and minerals, making sprouted grains a potential nutrition powerhouse.

Since sprouted grains offers nutritional benefits, how would you like if you could have sprouted wholemeal bread for breakfast every morning?

Sunshine Bakeries, Singapore’s first commercial manufacturer and marketer of bakery products, recently launched the Sunshine Extra Fine Sprouted Wholemeal Bread and it is also the first Asian manufacturer to work with the US Whole Grains Council to educate consumers on the important benefits of sprouted grains.

According to the US Whole Grains Council, the premier authority on wholegrains, the next evolution in healthier food lies in sprouted wholegrains. Said Ms Cynthia Harriman, Director of Food & Nutrition Strategies of the US Whole Grains Council, “Singapore is a leader in Asia in promoting wholegrains, and within Singapore, it’s only natural that a leading company like Sunshine Bakeries would be at the forefront of the newest advances in wholegrains. Research shows sprouted grains are gentler on our digestion, have higher levels of fiber, folate, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It also has lower glycemic impact, which helps keep blood sugar healthy.”

Ms Cynthia Harriman, Director of Food & Nutrition Strategies of the US Whole Grains Council, sharing with the media on the benefits of sprouted grains via a video-conference session.

Sunshine Extra Fine Sprouted Wholemeal Bread is an innovative new product unparalleled in taste, texture and nutritional level. An abundance of extra fine 80% wholemeal flour gives it an extra softness in each bite. Personally, we feel that the bread goes pretty well with a whole lot of other ingredients like jams, seafood, and even meat!

If you are interested in the Sunshine Extra Fine Sprouted Wholemeal Bread, it is available at all leading supermarkets, convenience stores, and petrol marts!
