I’m currently in Ipoh, Malaysia and because I wanted to travel light, I didn’t bring my laptop along and I’m blogging using my iPhone [for the very first time].
Due to the limitations of using my iPhone to Blog, the content of this Blog Post may be shorter than usual. Also, the photos that are in this blog post are taken using the iPhone 5 camera and are also at the same time, edited on my iPhone using the Snapseed App which I personally find extremely useful.

For my trip to Ipoh, Malaysia, I took the Firefly Airline and it was my first time taking their plane.

20121229-190018.jpg

20121229-192540.jpg

And well, I didn’t quite expected that we had to take the transit vehicle to our plane since most of the time, boarding the planes are directly via the boarding gate.

20121229-194128.jpg
It came as a shock to me when I found out that the plane we were taking to Ipoh flies with propeller fans!

20121229-192647.jpg
Well, guess I shouldn’t expect much since it is a small plane that flies short distances. The cabin was average and the inflight service was not too bad. In fact, light snacks such as cakes and juices were served.

20121229-192814.jpg
When we arrived at Ipoh Airport, we were warmly received by our relatives and we headed straight to the Serviced Apartment where we are putting up.

20121229-192924.jpg

Although the Serviced Apartment is rather basic, it is well-equipped with a television, a microwave, a refrigerator, and even a washing machine.

20121229-192850.jpg

20121229-193017.jpg

20121229-192913.jpg

Each apartment has 3 bedrooms and they either have twin single beds or just a queen-sized bed; hence, it is extremely suitable for those with large family.

20121229-192831.jpg

A very good thing about the apartment is that every bedroom has an attached bathroom; so, there’s no need to fight over the bathrooms with one another.

20121229-192902.jpg

After settling down in our apartment, we headed for lunch at the nearby restaurant and we really had a sumptuous and filling lunch. Just look at the amount of food we had!

20121229-192955.jpg

The restaurant has a wide selection of Yong Tau Foo to go along with some vermicelli and wanton noodles.

20121229-193006.jpg

Having had our fill, we went to my Aunt’s place for awhile and headed for shopping at Station 18, a newly-opened shopping mall in Ipoh.

Anyways, I may not be blogging over the next few days as I’m somewhat limited without a laptop. Nevertheless, we’re still quite active on Twitter and Instagram so do check us out over there.

Also, the latest giveaway that we just organized has commenced since yesterday, so do join in the giveaway and you might just be the winner of a set of Sticky Ties!

Stay tuned to more updates from us!

With the recent scandal about Zoey Raymond that has been going on the Internet for more than a week already, there was even a ANTI ZOE Raymond Facebook Page that purports to be supporting Yuki Ng but in actual fact, was used to slam Zoey Raymond.
Alright, let us make this point clear. As we do not personally know Yuki Ng, Alvin Yang, or Zoey Raymond; there is absolutely no need for us to defend or accuse anybody. Yes, Yuki Ng may have been badly hurt by Alvin Yang and Zoey Ramoynd, and we all know that feeling of a shattered heart; especially for those of us whom have ever been in a relationship, but there is absolutely no need to incite hatred towards another individual that results in the behaviour of Cyber-Bullying.

The legal definition of Cyber-Bullying as given on Wikipedia is as follows:

Cyber-Bullying is defined in legal glossaries as:

  • actions that use information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group, that is intended to harm another or others.
  • use of communication technologies for the intention of harming another person
  • use of internet service and mobile technologies such as web pages and discussion groups as well as instant messaging or SMS text messaging with the intention of harming another person.

Examples of what constitutes Cyber-Bullying include communications that seek to intimidate, control, manipulate, put down, falsely discredit, or humiliate the recipient. The actions are deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior intended to harm another. A Cyber-Bully may be a person whom the target knows or an online stranger. A Cyber-Bully may be anonymous and may solicit involvement of other people online who do not even know the target. This is known as a ‘digital pile-on.’

Although Singapore may not officially have laws that are specific to Cyber-Bullying, there are existing laws that can be applied against Cyber-Bullying and it may amount to criminal intimidation under the Penal Code, an offence which carries a penalty of imprisonment and/or a fine.

In a report by AsiaOne News, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Mr. Teo Chee Hean explained that offences such as extortion or insulting a woman’s modesty could apply to Cyber-Bullying as well. In cases involving serious threats, such as threats to cause death or grievous hurt, the penalty is more severe, with a longer term of imprisonment. A victim of Cyber-Bullying may also obtain a civil injunction from the court to restrain the perpetrator.

So seriously, for those who slammed Zoey Raymond by creating an ANTI ZOE Raymond Facebook Page, we hope that the person whom created the page and the people whom were involved in the slamming would understand the consequences of Cyber-Bullying and that Zoey Raymond has every right to obtain a civil injunction from the court to restrain the perpetrators.

Anyways, as of now [1735 hours], the ANTI ZOE Raymond Facebook Page has been taken down temporarily and it is unclear whether any actions will be taken against those whom were involved in the act of Cyber-Bullying. We believe screenshots of the ANTI ZOE Raymond Facebook Page have been taken and those can be used as evidences against those whom were involved in the act of Cyber-Bullying.

With that being said, it seems that the group of people whom were involved might bring their laments and hatred to Zoey Raymond’s Facebook Page and/or Yuki Ng’s Facebook Page. If they [the group of people] slam Zoey Raymond on Zoey Raymond’s Facebook Page, Zoey Raymond can inform the relevant authorities and action will be taken against them promptly. If they slam Zoey Raymond on Yuki Ng’s Facebook Page; it might be possible that the relevant authorities will take action against not just the group of people but Yuki Ng as well. So, we really hope that everyone can sit down, reflect, and think rationally before inciting hatred and carrying out the act of Cyber-Bullying. If the group of people whom supports Yuki Ng are serious about encouraging and supporting Yuki Ng, we’re pretty sure they would follow what Yuki Ng told her followers to do; that is, to resolve issues by communicating with wisdom and maturity, and not use harsh expletives against another individual.

So well, we hope that through this blog entry, we as Netizens can be more mature in the way we communicate and do things on the Internet.

Stay tuned to more updates from us!

God bless!

Who exactly is Zoey Raymond? To be really honest, I didn’t even know of her existence until I read the entire note about how this lady by the name of Zoey Raymond, came between a relationship, became a third party in the relationship, and caused a wedding that was two months away from taking place to be called off! Sounds like a drama right? But well, it is a reality that this has happened and it is pretty sad to see the account of Yuki Ng, whom was the bride-to-be.
Till date, Zoey Raymond hasn’t stepped forward to give an account of her side of the story and neither have Alvin, whom was the groom-to-be, said anything to clarify the matter. From the looks of it, Yuki Ng’s account is extremely credible with substantial evidence and backing from family members and friends; and Yuki Ng gives me the impression that she is pretty mature and composed; judging by the way she expresses herself in the notes that she writes.

I shan’t replicate the story in this blog entry but if you’re really interested to read Yuki Ng’s account [some of which are written in Mandarin and some of them which has been translated into English], do check out: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Alvin-Yuki/253711181424186?fref=ts

Also, out of curiousity, I went to check out the Facebook Page of Zoey Raymond and I was pretty appalled at the behaviour of certain Netizens. Their comments towards Zoey Raymond were extremely harsh, some of which are pretty uncouth and laced with expletives, and I think it is really important that we learn how to conduct ourselves be it online or offline. While Zoey Raymond may deserve some form of punishment, who are we really to judge? I’m not implying that what Zoey Raymond did was right because I’ve been through what Yuki Ng went through, but surly there could be a more mature way of telling people that what they did was wrong right? I totally agree with what Yuki Ng recently mentioned; that even if we ought to scold people, there is a more civilised way of scolding them.

Anyhows, I highly doubt people would really pursue this matter till the end. Who knows, this news would probably have die down by next week or the week after and it will soon become just another part of history.

**************************************************

On a separate note, Instagram recently announced a change in their policy and this has caused quite a huge ruckus among Netizens and even till now, I am considering whether to stick to Instagram or jump ship to Flickr. Well, for now, I guess I will just backup all my files on Instagram and then when the need arises, jump ship to Instagram’s competitors like Flickr.

If you’re wondering how to backup all the photos that you have uploaded onto Instagram, there is a web app known as Instaport that can grab all of your photos for download. For more details about Instagram’s change in policy, you can check out an article written on Cnet via the following link: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-57559710-38/instagram-says-it-now-has-the-right-to-sell-your-photos

Alright, so much about all these rantings; it’s time to get back to the second part of my Genting Trip with Nuffnang!

Here’s a shoutout to all you party-goers! If you’re the sort of person who enjoys partying all night and you own an iPhone, Goinout is one app that you got to check out on the Apple App Store. Well, the developers of the Goinout app are currently in the midst of developing an Android version of the app and it is unclear when it would be ready.
Anyhows, we were invited to the Launch of Goinout’s Student Ambassador Programme [and no, we’re not Students] and we managed to find out some juicy information about Goinout. More than just that, we had an enjoyable time interacting with the party-goers and the team whom created Goinout.

So what’s goin’ on tonite?

From Goinout 2012

Besides having Sarpino’s Pizza during the event,

From Goinout 2012

Booze was served as well.

Here’s Christian [the CEO] and Dinesh [the Founder and CTO] posing for a photo before the event officially commenced.

From Goinout 2012

So what’s Goinout essentially about?

In a nutshell, Goinout is an application especially for those who party and it has a similar concept as Foursquare. Ok, when we talk about Social Media Networks; we have Facebook [for connecting with friends], Twitter [to keep up with the latest trends], LinkedIn [to keep up with the corporate world and connect with colleagues], Foursquare [to stalk your friends], Instagram [to see what you friends are up to], and the list goes on and on. Well, Goinout is another Social Media Network where you connect with your partying/nightlife friends. You could find out where your friends are partying, send them a message, or even invite them to a party!

How Goinout works for users?

From Goinout 2012

Alright, both Baby and I are not exactly party animals. The only nightlife we have is chilling out at The Straits Wine over the weekends and sipping away a glass of Moscato D’Asti. But if you’re a party animal, Goinout allows you to meet new party friends, find out where the hottest events are, and the best part is, it allows you to earn points too. These points which you earn while using Goinout allows you to redeem for free drinks, VIP passes, so on and so forth. More plans and tie-ups are still in the pipelines though.

Currently, the team from Goinout is giving away SGD$0.50 for every new user you bring into the app and the maximum amount of cash that they are giving away is $20,000. And no, we don’t get anything for posting this blog entry up.

From Goinout 2012

So, if you’re a party animal, check out Goinout on the Apple App Store and get your friends to download them for free!

Disney’s WRECK-IT RALPH [purposely put caps-lock because Ralph is a total wrecker] is going to be released on 20 December 2012 and that is in exactly 11 days time! Well, I’m not sure how many of you are travelling overseas for holidays during that period but if you’re not and you’re trying to find something to do, do mark down 20 December in your calendars and go catch Wreck-It Ralph. By the way, Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph is suitable for children and if you’re thinking of catching a movie with your little one, you could do so too!

Talking about Wreck-It Ralph, I still remember that the first video game I played when I was 7 years old, was Super Mario and back then, the first video game set I own was the Nintendo Gameboy. Trust me, Super Mario was like the best game there ever was during my time. Even till now, I consider Mario as my favourite game character because I grew up with it. Today, there are many different variations of the Super Mario Brothers Game and I am still playing Mario on the Wii that Baby bought for me last year. So, you can be dead sure that I am an avid fan of Super Mario.

How many of you have played or owned this Nintendo Gameboy Set before? Kee-Chiu!

Anyhows, I am really excited to catch Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph because the storyline is extremely meaningful and it portrays how is it like to be the bad guy in every game. I really do wonder; what if one day there are no more villains in a game? What would happen then? Well, I guess that definitely would not happen in a long time.

Here’s the Movie Synopsis of Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph:

Walt Disney Animation Studios and Emmy®-winning director Rich Moore (TV’s “The Simpsons,” “Futurama”) take moviegoers on a hilarious, arcade-game-hopping journey in “Wreck-It Ralph.” Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly, “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” “Step Brothers”) is tired of being overshadowed by Fix-It Felix (voice of Jack McBrayer, “30 Rock”), the “good guy” star of their game who always gets to save the day. But after decades doing the same thing and seeing all the glory go to Felix, Ralph decides he’s tired of playing the role of a bad guy.  He takes matters into his own massive hands and sets off on a game-hopping journey across the arcade through every generation of video games to prove he’s got what it takes to be a hero.

On his quest, he meets the tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Jane Lynch, TV’s “Glee”) from the first-person action game Hero’s Duty. But it’s the feisty misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman, “The Sarah Silverman Program”) from the candy-coated cart racing game, Sugar Rush, whose world is threatened when Ralph accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens the entire arcade.  Will Ralph realize his dream and save the day before it’s too late?

Check out the Movie Trailer of Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph:

Catch Disney’s WRECK-IT RALPH in Singapore cinemas this 20 December 2012 and do like the Official Walt Disney Studios Singapore Facebook Page, follow @disneystudiosSG and subscribe to the Official Disney Studios Singapore YouTube Channel for more updates from Disney!

Recently, much has been said about the illegal strike by the drivers from China and there have been quite a lot of “internet bashings” among netizens as well. More recently, the Transport Minister said that next year’s public transport fare adjustments will take into account the need to raise bus drivers’ wages. Really, is this necessary or are they just using the strike as an excuse?
Already, we are trying very hard to make ends meets, and with the ever-increasing costs of basic necessities, why hasn’t our income raised by a fair bit? My mum tells me that the income we receive today is somewhat similar to the income she received 20 years ago! So, what exactly in the world is going on?

For a start, I do agree with the fact that not many Singaporeans want to work in the service industry. As a result, many foreign workers have been hired to fill the gap and trust me, they work really long hours but are paid very little as well. In fact, in order to earn more in the service industry, workers will have to work more overtime hours and sacrifice the time that they could have spent with their loved ones and friends, causing a work-life imbalance and disharmony.

Seeing that this is the case, shouldn’t it be time that there is a review on the wages of those working in the service industry? Shouldn’t those whom are working in the service line be paid more? Of course they should, but where is the money going to come from?! From the consumers or from the corporation?!

Let me give an analogy here. If I were to start an ice-cream business selling ice-creams and the demand for ice-creams is low, I would have to sell the ice-creams for a cheaper price so that consumers will be attracted to buy them right? Now, if the demand for ice-creams is high and because I have a limited supply of ice-creams, I will sell my ice-creams at a higher price so as to reap more profits. However, seeing that the ice-cream business is a good source of income, my friend started his own ice-cream business too. Now, there are more supplies of ice-cream and in order to remain competitive, I will have to sell my ice-cream for a more acceptable and competitive pricing.

Now, what if I want to hire workers to work for me and sell my ice-creams? Do I raise the price and provide more services to the consumer or do I keep costs low? The main product that the consumer wants is ice-cream and for some of them, they wouldn’t mind paying a higher price if there are more services in return.

In this case, consumers are given the freedom and choice to choose whose ice-cream they would want to buy and at what price they want to buy.

Now, let’s bring this analogy back to the main issue using SBS and SMRT as the main context. Even though SBS and SMRT have been privatised, there are absolutely no other bus or train companies that directly compete with them. Hence, both SBS and SMRT form a duopoly and have the freedom to set the price for public transport services. Moreover, there are barriers to prevent potential business owners from setting up another bus/train company to directly compete with SBS and SMRT. How do I know that there are barriers? It’s pretty simple. Since transportation is an essential service that is always high in demand, why are there only two main transport service providers? I think this is pretty clear cut.

Since we know that SBS and SMRT are privatised and that there are barriers to prevent potential business owners from setting up another bus/train company to directly compete with SBS and SMRT, the question now is, “Is this fair?”. We Singaporeans always say that SBS and SMRT are forms of public transport, not private transport. So, if it is public transport, shouldn’t the prices be kept within the reach of an average Singaporean? If is is public transport, shouldn’t SBS and SMRT be under the government’s direct control and not be privatised? If there is a significant mismatch between costs and the prices at which SBS and SMRT are offering for public transportation, then may I ask, is this because the wages include not just the bus drivers, but also the management and key executives of SBS and SMRT?

Just take a look at how much the management and key executives of SBS and SMRT earn! These information are extracted from SBS’s and SMRT’s 2011 annual report that are available on their respective website.

SBS Directors’ Remuneration

From Drop Box

SBS Key Executives’ Remuneration

SMRT Directors’ Remuneration

From Drop Box

SMRT Key Executives’ Remuneration

From Drop Box

So, is the Transportation Minister implying that we ought to pay more so that the management and key executives of SBS and SMRT can maintain their current lifestyle and also at the same time increase the bus drivers’ wages? Come on, if SBS and SMRT had kept their costs low by not paying the management and key executives of SBS and SMRT so much, then there wouldn’t be any need for an increase in public transportation fare. And by the way, why are they paid so much? Can someone please justify what is it that they do in their daily jobs to earn so much? Yes, I know SBS and SMRT are privatised companies, but they are essentially providing public transportation services, not private transportation services. See the irony?

I really do hope that Singaporeans will rally together and make our voices heard. Public transportation should be made affordable and within reach of any average Singaporean. Public transportation companies should be public and not privatised. Private transportation companies should be privatised because they are providing private transport services, not public transport services. If SBS and SMRT have been earning profits for the last 5 years and yet still be able to afford to pay the directors and executives with such a huge remuneration package, they should then allocate resources to cater to the increase of the bus drivers’ wages; not increase fares.

Also, if not for the constant support of omy Blog Club, Nuffnang, and a few other PR companies like SPRG, One9Ninety, and Mileage, our blog would not have had the privilege of working with established and reputable brands such as McDonald’s, LG, Crocs, and Far East Hospitality [just to name a few]. During the whole month of November, we have received tons of invitations to events and we also participated in quite a number of activities as well. Taking a step back, we started to reflect upon the wonderful opportunities that were presented to us and we pondered over many questions in our head.
Some of the questions that we have been asking ourselves are:

1). Why are we blogging?
2). What are we blogging for?
3). Where do our blog stand in the blogosphere?
4). How can we make our blog posts more interesting and exciting for our readers?
5). Have we been true to ourselves?

To begin with, A Winsome Life was founded because both Baby and I have a passion for food and photography and we want to share our interesting findings with people. From our humble beginnings of blogging about food, we now blog about movies, travel, technology and even fashion. Obviously, being a lifestyle blogger isn’t easy because the range of topics are just so diverse and we have to be quick on our toes to capitalise on the latest trends and developments. However, more than just wanting to stay on top of the news, we really want to make our blog as interesting and as exciting it can be for all our readers, and this is where we really need the participation of our readers. If you have been checking out our blog, we really would appreciate your honest feedbacks, comments, and suggestions so that we can further improve our content. To submit your honest feedbacks, comments, and suggestions, you could either drop us an email at admin@awinsomelife.org or use the contact form that can be found in the “Contact Us” section.

Since Golden Village [GV] City Square opened for business on 13 November 2012, avid movie-goers can now catch their favourite movies at the newly-opened multiplex @ City Square Mall and with 11 multiplexes under their name, GV is Singapore’s largest cinema operator and that’s good news because with an addition of a new multiplex, it just gives movie-goers another avenue to catch their favourite movies.

What’s really cool about GV City Square is that it houses the Couple’s Cinema too! Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to shoot photographs of the Couple’s Cinema but if you’re interested to find out more, do check out GV’s website.

The Couple’s Cinema features a unique seating layout where pairs of cinema seats are separated from one another, allowing couples to cosy-up in their private space. Even though ticket prices on a normal weekday for the Couple’s Cinema cost $12, that is still way cheaper than Gold Class tickets if you’re planning for a romantic date without the hefty price tag.

I was accompanying my mum out to shop today and while driving on the PIE, there were three idiotic drivers whom were driving rather dangerously along the expressway. I shall name the three idiotic drivers as Chevrolet, Honda, and Berlingo Van for an easier account of what happened.

Here’s Our Account Of What Happened:

I was driving in the 2nd lane at a speed of around 70km/hr and there were three cars on the right lane. If you look closely in the video, there was this particular Chevrolet on the 1st lane and the driver was probably driving at 80km/hr. However, the Chevrolet for some reason has a tendency to jam his brakes even though there was nobody tailgating him. So, I suppose the Chevrolet must be texting or fiddling with his phone.

Then, a Honda started to tailgate the Chevrolet and the driver of the Chevrolet jammed his brakes. Behind the Honda was a Berlingo Van and in order to avoid hitting the Honda that was in front of him, he [the driver of the Berlingo Van] jammed his brakes too and swerved slightly into my lane before swerving back to his lane.

When I gave the driver of the Berlingo Van my deadly stare and was on the verge of shouting expletives, the driver of the Berlingo Van said it wasn’t his fault but the Honda’s fault for tailgating the Chevrolet that was in front. “Come on la, if you didn’t tailgated the Honda, then you wouldn’t have to jam your brakes right?” Furthermore, the Berlingo Van can be seen accelerating and he probably wasn’t even concentrating while driving on the road. How dangerous can that be?! Also, the speed limit for a Berlingo Van is 70km/hr and the expressway speed limit is 90km/hr. How can a Berlingo Van be travelling in the 1st lane when it’s not supposed to be speeding?!

Then again, it isn’t the Berlingo Van’s fault entirely. The Cheverolet and the Honda were pretty much in the wrong too. Thank God both my Mum and I are safe and sound.

Seriously, idiotic drivers like these are commonplace in Singapore and accidents on the road occur quite frequently. So, I will strongly recommend you drivers to install a camera if you aren’t equipped with one yet. I used to think that this wasn’t necessary but after encountering more than one incidents like these, having a camera installed in my car has become a necessity.

If you’re not sure where you can get a decent camera for your car, you might want to try the one that I found on Qoo10.sg below:
