As part of the Marina Bay Ambayssadors programme, we were invited to the Guinness Arthur’s Day that was held at The Promontory @ Marina Bay on Friday and we had a blast with the energetic crowd of Guinness fans!

I was participating in some mini activities at Guinness Arthur’s Day and one of them includes this one where I have to make a toast, “To Arthur!” as loudly as I could. Well, as you can see, I’m not so tall and had to stand on a platform to match up to the model’s height!

Jacqueline and I posing for more photos at Guinness Arthur’s Day! We were indeed partying like rockstars!

Guinness memorabilia over the years.

Thanks to Guinness, we had a complimentary chicken kebab wrap…

and also 5 pints of Guinness Stout!

Bringing together 1,759 fans for a celebration of its boldest fans, Guinness hosted Arthur’s Day celebrations for the second time in Singapore, with double platinum record artists, The Fray, headlining this year’s programme.

Partying in a specially constructed pint-shaped concert arena at The Promontory @ Marina Bay, guests at the concert enjoyed an epic set by The Fray, and were also entertained by local band, Ellipsis, whom were winners of the ‘Play on the Day’ competition.

Local Band Ellipsis

This was how the party looked like from an aerial point of view. The idea of a specially constructed pint-shaped concert arena is really indigenous.

To top it all off, as The Fray took their positions onstage and began their first song, the Guinness Arthur’s Day backdrop came down to reveal a transparent screen that allowed for views of the illuminated Marina Bay and the breath-taking Singapore skyline. Everyone, including us, were caught by surprise and it was really a sight to behold.

Can you spot the breath-taking Singapore skyline in the background?

Isaac Slade, the lead vocalist, main songwriter, pianist, and co-founder of The Fray.

Joe King, the guitarist, backing vocalist, songwriter and co-founder of The Fray.

Ben Wysocki on the drums.

Dave Welsh, the lead guitarist for The Fray.

In an intimate setting, The Fray led the the huge crowd of fans and invited guests in the signature toast, “To Arthur”; celebrating Guinness’ founder, Arthur Guinness, who was distinctive, bold and epitomizes the concept,”Made of More”.

Much to the audience’s delight, The Fray are in the mixing and editing stage of their fourth studio album and they even performed a sneak peek of their upcoming album that will be debuting for the first time outside of the United States!

“It has been amazing being part of our first Guinness Arthur’s Day here in Singapore, from leading the toast to Arthur, to the super cool stage with the city in the backdrop, and even having Ellipsis open for us today. Performing here is truly a special experience, with everyone singing not just to our tracks that air on the radio but also the album’s track songs. It’s honestly quite a pleasant surprise the lengths everyone has gone to, to be part of the experience tonight, and we hope we have given everyone as great a night as we have had,” said The Fray.

The Fray sends their love to Singapore!

Their new songs ‘Hold My Hand’ and ‘Wherever This Goes’, were thrown into the crowd-swaying mix, along with their award-winning tunes ‘How to Save a Life’, ‘Never Say Never’, ‘You Found Me’ and ‘Over my Head [Cable Car]’, amongst others.

“From the ‘Play on the Day’ competition which led to a local emerging band opening for The Fray today, to the bold activations and sharing of Guinness moments that have brought these 1,759 fans together in this special way, the second installment of Guinness Arthur’s Day in Singapore has indeed been an amazing success for the brand,” said Mr Rene de Monchy, Head of Marketing, Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore. “Guinness has, and will continue to stay true to rewarding its fans with novel experiences such as Arthur’s Day, and continue being a passionate supporter of live music here in Singapore.”

Singapore joined over 55 countries and an estimated 1.7 million people across the world to celebrate the fifth year that Guinness Arthur’s Day has been celebrated globally.

Like we mentioned, we had a blast at Guinness Arthur’s Day and we would like to conclude this posting by saying a big “Thank You!” to Guinness for having us there at the event. It was indeed a night to remember and we’re pretty sure all of the bold fans whom were present share similar sentiments!

If you were there for the Guinness Arthur’s Day, don’t forget to visit the Guinness Singapore Facebook Page for post-event updates!

Last Saturday, Jacqueline and I celebrated our 32nd monthsary in a rather interesting way; a visit to Nee Soon Camp for the Singapore Armed Forces [SAF] Army Mobilisation Exercise [MOBEX] that involved personnels from the 76th Singapore Infantry Brigade.
Now, having ORD-ed one year ago, I have not been called up for any In Camp Training [ICT], reservist, nor been involved in any form of military exercise. I know it’s a taboo to even be mentioning about this and who knows, I might probably receive a letter tomorrow for ICT.

The time spent at Nee Soon Camp was an extremely fruitful one because not only have I gotten the opportunity to understand how the MOBEX is being carried out, Jacqueline also had the rare privilege to understand and have a taste of what the Army and National Service [NS] is all about.

Prior to the MOBEX, we have absolutely no clue as to when we would be activated to go down to Nee Soon Camp and when we received a text message from the Army Public Relations Officer at 0700 hours in the morning, about 8 hours before we had to “report” to Nee Soon Camp, we prepared our equipment [cameras, spare batteries, memory cards, tripod] and headed straight to Nee Soon Camp.

When we reached Nee Soon Camp, we were greeted by a team of Army Officers whom brought us around the various locations and I was actually honoured to have Senior Lieutenant Colonel [S/LTC] Ng to lead us around because back then, he was my Basic Military Training Centre [BMTC] School 3 Commanding Officer during my Basic Military Training [BMT] days. Seeing him brought back many memorable memories of the time I spent during my NS. Apart from that, we were also quite surprised to learn that a friend of ours was the Commanding Officer of a battalion involved in the MOBEX!

If you noticed, the beret of the Infantry has changed to a lighter olive green colour and all infantry troopers will soon be issued with the new beret!

Our first stop for the day was to check out the in-processing/registration counters for the MOBEX. This is also the first stop where personnels whom have been mobilised would have to report to and have their attendance registered into the system.

With the process of the in-processing being automated, the waiting time has also been significantly reduced. This certainly helps to save time and ensures that time is spent doing more meaningful activities.

When a personnel heads to the in-processing counter, he will be issued with a card that indicates all the essential details pertaining to the MOBEX. Some details would include things like the role he plays and the equipment that he needs to be issued with.

After the in-processing is done, the personnel will head over to the Equipping Centre to draw his weapon, and then if necessary, his communications [comms] set. Following which, the personnel will then draw his personal equipment i.e raincoat, ET blade, groundsheet, and etc.

Captain Leo showing us the neatly packed weapon kit that contains all that is needed to maintain and equip the weapon.

Captain Leo showing us the neatly packed personal equipment kit.

We were brought through the entire process of what a personnel is supposed to do when he is activated for a MOBEX and we were quite amazed that at every point, the personnel is engaged with whatever he needs to do. It is also interesting to note that every equipment issued was done in a neat and proper order; thus ensuring that every mobilised personnel is ready to be deployed in a short matter of time.

In the past, MOBEX took up quite a lot of time and the wastage of time was rather evident [if not, why do you think the phrase, “Army wait to rush and rush to wait” exists? Now, with technological advances and innovative ideas, the Army has really re-invented the way personnels are being mobilised.

Apart from the drawing of equipment and the accounting of men for the MOBEX, personnels also had a go at refreshing their military skills at the Soldier Fundamental [SOFUN] stations. The SOFUN stations at the MOBEX were very useful for the personnels involved because it helps to reinforce what they have previously learnt during their NS days.

We even had a go at the SOFUN stations and the first one that we went to was the station where personnels reinforce their military skills in Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Defence [CBRD]. Here, we donned on the Mission Oriented Protective Posture [MOPP] 4 uniform and we took a short stroll around the vicinity.

Collecting the MOPP 4.

The MOPP 4 kit.

This certainly reminded me of my NS days when I was an Officer Cadet [OCT] at SAFTI Military Institute because we had a similar sort of training where we had to don on the MOPP 4, go into a chamber, and experience the effects of tear gas on the human body while doing some light physical training.

It certainly was a very interesting experience for Jacqueline.

Us in MOPP 4.

We then proceeded to the second station which was located at the shooting range.

At the shooting range, we went through a similar SAR-21 weapon technical handling refresher course that personnels had to undergo and I was hoping that we had the opportunity to strip and assemble the weapon but that wasn’t the case.

We learnt about some drills such as the loading and unloading of the rifle, immediate actions to carry out in case of no feeding or double feeding, and clearing the weapon to make sure that it is safe for storage.

For the mobilised personnels, they were given magazines loaded with live rounds for their currency shoots and hearing the explosive shots from the rifle makes the whole session so thrilling.

Thereafter we embarked for the last SOFUN station where mobilised personnels reinforce their first-aid skills like cardiopulmonary resuscitation [CPR], using the automated external defibrillator [AED], and the tying of bandages.

These First Aid Dressings [FAD] are pretty useful for dressing wounds.

Check out this video if you want to learn how to carry out CPR.

Overall, we had a rather enjoyable learning experience at Nee Soon Camp and we really want to thank the team of Army Officers and Army Public Relations Officers for hosting us. The MOBEX experience was indeed eye-opening and the next time I get mobilised, I definitely have a clearer picture of what to expect.

Certainly, the MOBEX today is entirely different from that of the past. It was heartening to see our NS-men so committed and engaged to the defence of our country that when the button is pushed, Singaporean sons from all walks of life will come together and get down to serious business. There’s definitely no room for time wastage, idling, and nonsense. Everyone of the NS-men was serious and mission ready.

Indeed, we should be proud of our NS-men and truly, our Army is Ready, Decisive, and Respected!

[Disclaimer: Before we continue with the rest of the blog post, kindly note that the giveaway is only limited to those whom are above 18 years of age. As such, proof of age is required when you submit your entries to us.]
Last Wednesday, we were at No. 5 Emerald Hill for the exclusive launch of the Corona Mexican Bulldog Cocktail and it was a blast!

No. 5 Emerald Hill Cocktail Bar is indeed a cosy place for a chill-out session.

The beautiful lanterns at No. 5 Emerald Hill Cocktail Bar.

In case you’re wondering what exactly is the concoction for the Corona Mexican Bulldog Cocktail, it basically consists of a bottle of Corona Extra and a glass of Margarita.

Corona Extra is a pale lager produced by Cervecería Modelo in Mexico and it is one of the top-selling beers worldwide. Commonly served with a wedge of lime in the neck of the bottle to add tartness and flavour, Corona Extra is the best beer for parties and gatherings!

And if you’re wondering what a Margarita is, it is actually a Mexican cocktail that consists of tequila mixed with Cointreau and lime. Often served with salt on the glass rim, Margarita is the most common tequila-based cocktail and is served shaken with ice, blended with ice, or without ice.

So what happens when you mix a Mexican Beer and a Mexican Cocktail?

You get a Corona Mexican Bulldog Cocktail!

The silly things we do at an event just to capture some photographs. 🙂

Jacqueline posing for a photo with one of the Samba Dancers.

Personally, we have never tried mixing cocktails with beers before and having tasted the Corona Mexican Bulldog Cocktail, we have to admit that we are kinda addicted to it already! The taste is tangy, smooth, and highly refreshing. However, having said that, a glass of the Corona Mexican Bulldog Cocktail might probably knock out amateur drinkers.

Step 1: Pose for a photo with a bottle of Corona Extra.

Step 2: Dunk the bottle of Corona Extra into the Margarita.

Step 3: As soon the Corona Extra flows into the Margarita, use a straw and drink everything as fast as you can.

Last Saturday, we attended the Singapore Blog Awards Ceremony 2013 that was organised at Shanghai Dolly by OMY and it was a good time of catching up with our friends from the blogosphere. This annual event is a rather big event for bloggers and it always gets bigger and better every year.
The theme for this year’s Singapore Blog Awards is the 1960’s and we found it really meaningful. It was through the theme that we learnt how the people in the 1960’s live and what their culture were like. To be honest, Jacqueline and I didn’t thought of participating in this year’s Singapore Blog Awards 2013 as we didn’t felt like we had the chance of even winning anything. However, a really good Blogger friend of ours, Mag, felt that we had the potential and nominated us for the Best Lifestyle Blog Category.

Seriously, there are a lot of Lifestyle Bloggers in Singapore and even then, the title of a “Lifestyle Blogger” can be rather generic and vague. As a matter of fact, lifestyle can cover anything and everything from topics like fashion and entertainment to topics like food and events. Hence, we were extremely surprised when the results were out and we ended up as the Top 10 Finalists for the Best Lifestyle Blog! Looking back, I guess we have come a long way now and it definitely wasn’t easy as the Best Lifestyle Blog Category was a hotly-contested one.

Although we didn’t clinch the title of “Best Lifestyle Blogger”, it didn’t matter to us because we know that all this wouldn’t even have happened if not for our Blogger friend, Mag, whom believed in us and nominated us. Hence, a very much of our success for this year’s Singapore Blog Awards 2013 is attributed to her. Also, the other group of people whom we would like to thank would be our family members and friends whom constantly and religiously voted for us every single day. Like we mentioned from the very first day, we don’t enjoy canvassing for votes because it is such a tedious and long process. If only the voting campaign was shorter and straightforward, I believe it would have levelled the playing field as Bloggers whom have more followers would definitely have a major advantage over those who don’t.

Nevertheless, we enjoyed ourselves at the Singapore Blog Award Ceremony 2013 as both Jacqueline and I wore quirky retro outfit that kinda attracted a little too much attention. It was a blast and it was really nice meeting new people and making new friends.

Here are just some of our photos that were taken during the Singapore Blog Awards Ceremony 2013.

ciNE65 was launched in July 2011 by Nexus and it is a short film competition for film enthusiasts to share their Singapore story.
Following the success of its predecessor, ciNE65 II was launched in February 2013 with the theme, “I’ll Be There For You, Singapore” and the public were invited to share their take on the theme through a 3-minute film. The aim of ciNE65 II is to strengthen the emotional connection of Singaporeans to Singapore through film and apart from that, it also serves as a unique platform to recognise and nurture film-making talents, thereby contributing towards the development of the local short film scene.

This year, there was a record bumper crop of 166 film entries that were submitted and this was double that of the inaugural run in 2011, which received 72 entries. The second season of the short film competition, ciNE65 II, concluded yesterday evening at Golden Village [Grand] with the unveiling of a new batch of winners.

For the Open Category, short film “Priceless” won the “Overall Best Film” and “Best Screenplay”. As for the Student Category, short film “Going Away” won the “Overall Best Film”. Both teams walked away with the grand prize of an overseas learning trip to a regional film festival in addition to cash prizes and Panasonic cameras.

Short Film “Priceless”

Short Film “Going Away”

Short film “Honey.” won the Favourite Film award, which was determined by public voting.

The Inter-School Challenge Trophy, a new award this season, went to Temasek Polytechnic, which submitted the highest number of quality entries in the Student Category.

13 other awards were also presented for Best Direction, Best Editing, Best Screenplay, Best Sound Design, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Favourite Actor and Favourite Actress.

In his speech at the Awards Ceremony, Guest-of-Honour, Senior Minister of State for Defence, Mr Chan Chun Sing, said that he was heartened by the response to the competition as it showed that people cared and wanted to contribute. Expressing his views on this season’s entries, Mr Chan said, “Many of the ciNE65 clips relate to me personally and deeply. They revolved around themes such as family, friends, care for fellow Singaporeans, commitment to Singapore’s defence and love for this place called home. Some brought back long-forgotten memories for me, some touched my heart and some made me laugh. The quality of films submitted was impressive. They reflected the deep thought and effort that participants put into making their films. More importantly, they have engaged us at the level where it matters – the heart.”

Personally, we like the short film entitled, “Saga Seed” because the story plot is really heartwarming and touching. Furthermore, the actors really portrayed their character really well and the music complements the overall theme of the short film. Truly, the short film, “Saga Seed” deserves to be the winner for the “Best Art Direction”.

Well, what about you? What are your thoughts about the short film and which one do you personally like the most?

We have been using SingTel’s 4G network for awhile now and the experience is truly enjoyable! Make no mistakes about it; though we know that many people may be skeptical about SingTel’s 4G network, our experience with it has proven that SingTel’s 4G network is undeniably the best in Singapore.
4G mobile network is essentially known as fourth generation mobile network and it is technically termed as Long Term Evolution [LTE]. With 4G network, the speeds at which data is being transferred are typically faster than using 3G network.

In case you’re wondering, SingTel’s 4G network expansion does not affect the quality of SingTel’s 3G network services in any way because both SingTel’s 3G and 4G services operate on separate networks. As a matter of fact, with more mobile users adopting 4G services, the quality of 3G services are expected to improve over time.

Just to let you know, we were issued with a review kit that consisted of a Huawei E392 USB Dongle and a SIM Card that hooks up to SingTel’s 4G network. Though the Huawei E392 USB Dongle wasn’t as compact as we hope for it to be, it was nevertheless still portable to carry around.

The Huawei E392 USB Dongle

Over the last 1 month, we were using SingTel’s 4G Network for all of our blogging needs and that includes uploading of photos, downloading of documents, surfing the Internet for information and streaming Youtube videos. Since we’re always out and about, we have tried using SingTel’s 4G Network at various locations and we must say, the speed is amazingly fast!

This is the sort of speed that we usually get when using SingTel’s 4G Network.

However, in case you’re wondering, we don’t achieve such fantastic results when we’re underground in the MRT Tunnels and at times, we might even get a 3G network instead of a 4G network. Even then, we still get a typical download speed range of 1.7 Mbps to 4.8 Mbps.

The speed range may vary between users and it is subjected to the device used, hardware and software limitation, 4G network coverage/traffic, distance between user and base station, nature of built-up area, source of website and other external factors.

Based on independent speed tests conducted by HardwareZone.com.sg, CNET Asia, and Digital Life, it is clear that SingTel’s 4G network offers users a consistently faster data download speeds.

Do you know?

SingTel is deploying cutting edge Multiple Input Multiple Output [MIMO] technology for 4G subscribers to enjoy download speeds of up to 150Mbps! That is double the 75Mbps speeds of conventional 4G networks and it has already been deployed in shopping malls like Serangoon Nex and Tampines Mall.

If you’re interested to check out and signup for SingTel’s 4G network, do visit SingTel’s Website for more information.

Having said so much about SingTel’s 4G network, we are conducting a giveaway that is kindly sponsored by SingTel. All you have to do is to answer 3 questions correctly and you can stand a chance to be one of the three lucky winners to win $20 worth of NTUC Fairprice Vouchers.

The 3 questions are:

1). What technology has SingTel deployed for 4G subscribers to enjoy download speeds of up to 150Mbps?

2). What does the term, “LTE” stands for?

3). In this article, we wrote that SingTel has deployed a technology which allows subscribers to enjoy fast download speeds of up to 150Mbps. Which two shopping malls are they?

Submit your answers via email with the subject, “SingTel 4G Contest” to admin@awinsomelife.org

3 lucky winners will be selected by a random number generator and the closing date for the contest is 12 July 2013, 2359 hours.

Good luck and remember to submit your entries as soon as possible! Godspeed!
