Crowned the Best Female Vocalist for 3 times at the highly-esteemed Golden Melody Award in Taiwan, Tanya Chua is the pride of our nation and she has certainly brought honour and glory to our little country, Singapore.

Spending most of her career in the Greater China Region singing, producing, and even judging on song competitions; Tanya not only made a name for herself in the Chinese Music Industry, but also became one of the key Singaporean Musicians in the Chinese Pop Music arena.

It has been more than a decade since I was last at the Singapore Omni-Theatre and recently, Jacqueline and I were invited to a special preview of the newly-revamped Singapore Omni-Theatre.

Established in 1987, the Omni-Theatre is Singapore’s only IMAX dome theatre. The 248-seat theatre is equipped with state-of-the-art IMAX technology which delivers the world’s most immersive experience. This is possible through the combination of specially-designed facilities and quality large format films.

When we were there, we had the privilege of watching a fulldome live show and the digital fulldome movie, “Back to the Moon for Good”.

I must say, having watched both the live show and the movie, I was so extremely immersed into the movie that when I stood up after the movie, my head felt like it was spinning. If you are bringing children to the Omni-Theatre to catch a live show or movie, do ensure that they do not walk about or stand up midway as they might get a little giddy and accidentally fall down the steps.

This is a picture taken when the live show was ongoing. Like I said, it is a really immersive experience; such that even when the theatre was dark, our camera can still capture the really clear image.

Apart from the truly immersive experience, I was very much amazed with the clarity of the projection and the crisp audio coming from the audio speakers. Just so you know, the Omni-Theatre’s interior was also re-carpeted and the seats re-upholstered. Hence, they are really comfortable!

The educational films offered cover genres such as science, space, nature, animals, marine life, culture, natural disasters and more.

With the latest digital fulldome system, live shows with topical and real-time presentations on space science can be conducted by the Science Educators from the Singapore Science Centre; using the Digistar 5 software and 8K projection system that delivers unrivalled digital resolution and brightness.

With Southeast Asia’s largest seamless dome screen, specially designed seating configuration, surround-sound effects, and the world’s latest and brightest 8K digital theatre system, the Omni-Theatre is definitely set to offer the most immersive learning experiences. For all you know, it might probably be Singapore’s best venue for edutainment.

A few weeks back, we were at Trapped SG to have an experience of the real life escape room they offer and it was our first time playing an escape room that is horror-themed. Just so you know, anything that is horror-themed isn’t our cup of tea and hence, this review might be quite bias.

Introduction

We arrived at Trapped SG rather early and we had the usual routine briefing that was conducted by the staff. We were told what we could do and what we couldn’t do inside the escape room and how we could seek for assistance if we could not solve a clue. Background information of the escape room was also given to us and we then proceeded to enter the World War 3 [Zombie Edition] escape room.

Our Experience In The World War 3 [Zombie Edition] Escape Room

Despite the staff telling us that there were no jump scares inside the escape room, we had a hard time being convinced and as a result, we wasted a lot of time making wrong decisions due to our clouded judgments. However, we have to admit that some of the clues weren’t even logical at all and it led us to the wrong track.

During our experience in the escape room, we had to make multiple assumptions and carry out multiple trials and errors. There were some clues that weren’t so straightforward and in the end, we only managed to get out just in time with the assistance and guidance from the staff.

Conclusion

Out of a scale of 5 stars, we will give 2.5 stars to Trapped SG.

If you are a seasoned player of escape rooms, you will probably find the props slightly below expectations but if you are a total newbie, it will be an entirely new experience that might get you hooked to playing escape rooms.

Though not the best escape room that we have been to so far, Trapped SG is decent enough to provide an entertaining gaming experience for new gamers. For more information on the other escape rooms that Trapped SG has to offer, do visit Trapped SG Official Website and like Trapped SG Official Facebook Page.

Not sure what to do and where to go this weekend? Well, why not head down to the Marina Bay for the DBS Marina Regatta 2015?
Set against the iconic skyline of Marina Bay, Singapore’s biggest watersports festival, the DBS Marina Regatta, returns for its fourth consecutive year to Ignite the Bay!

Held in conjunction with the 28th SEA Games, this year’s DBS Marina Regatta takes place over three weekends, from 30 May to 14 June and there, you can witness top dragon boating and sailing teams battle it out to be the country’s and the region’s best.

Apart from exhilarating sporting action in the water, members of the public can also check out the exciting activities which not only include cosplay, cheerleading, dance and music competitions, and extreme sports but also the dedicated kids zone, the fantastic food festival, and many more!

For the first time, free urban farming workshops will be held for those interested in learning how to farm sustainably in their homes and during the final weekend of the DBS Marina Regatta 2015, the Promontory will be transformed into Singapore’s first urban beach complete with palm trees, deck chairs, and a beach bar. The beach will also feature a 25m by 15m pool where a host of activities including stand-up paddling and stand-up yoga will take place.

[Artist Impression]

The event will also debut “Paddle for Good” where you can do a good deed! “Paddle for Good” simulates a dragon boat race, but on land with the use of indoor ergometer machines instead of boats. Form teams with persons with disabilities [PwDs] and paddle alongside them because for every one kilometre paddled, DBS will donate SGD$100 to organisations that will use the funds to organise sports activities for PwDs. Donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Care and Share movement led by Community Chest.

For more information about the exciting activities that will be taking place at the DBS Marina Regatta 2015, do visit www.dbsmarinaregatta.com or follow them on Instagram for live coverage of the event!

As promised, here’s part 2 our wedding guide to planning a nautical-themed wedding.
Like we mentioned, you have won half the battle when you have completed your bridal photography and so, what’s next?

File your notice of marriage with the Registry of Marriages [ROM]!

Do note that there is an earliest date and a latest date you can file for marriage and you should check out Registry of Marriages Official Website for more details.

If you have a preferred Wedding Solemniser after checking out Singapore’s Best Wedding Solemnisers, do contact him/her immediately and check his/her availability. We know ROM will advise you to contact the Wedding Solemniser 3 to 4 months before the solemnisation date but really, by then; your preferred Wedding Solemniser would have been booked by other couples already [so plan way in advance].

In case you’re wondering, our Wedding Solemniser was Miss Soh Geok Kee and our solemnisation was done in English at our residence. She was very friendly and helpful throughout and we were really honoured to have her solemnised our wedding.

Well, since we are Chinese, there’s a few additional things that we had to do and they are the Guo Da Li [betrothal ceremony] the An Chuang [setting the bed], and the day before the actual wedding, the Shang Tou [hair combing]. In fact, for a typical Chinese wedding, there are a lot of customs to follow and many taboos to be aware of.

For us, we made a trip to the Chinese Wedding Shop at Ang Mo Kio to get everything we needed for the Guo Da Li, An Chuang, and Shang Tou.

The Chinese Wedding Shop has 4 outlets in Singapore and they are very well-known for their Guo Da Li and An Chuang packages. The lady who served us at the Ang Mo Kio outlet was extremely helpful and she gave us all the pertinent information we needed for the Chinese wedding customs.

Another good place to find more information about Chinese wedding customs is the Internet but do be aware that certain practises may vary and it is always good to check with your parents and even grandparents what they expect for Guo Da Li, An Chuang, and Shang Tou.

While the Guo Da Li and An Chuang packages offered by The Chinese Wedding Shop is pretty standard and rather convenient, some people may prefer to buy the items separately as it may be cheaper.

After you have more or less settled the Guo Da Li and An Chuang, it is also about time that you shop around for your wedding bands and look for vendors who can liven up your wedding day with an entertaining live band, a delightful desserts table, memorable wedding favours, and a fun photo booth! Also, not forgetting the most important task, assembling your wedding entourage!

Our Wedding Bands from Love & Co.

We gotten our wedding bands from Love & Co. and as much as we hate to say this, we regretted making this decision because we could have gotten JannPaul to customise the wedding bands for us at a much more reasonable price. If only we knew about JannPaul much earlier, we would not have to spend the high price of SGD$4800 for our Love & Co. wedding bands. Nevertheless, we are still pretty satisfied with our premium Love & Co. wedding bands.

The five grooves on the band signify the elements of an everlasting relationship; love, bond, devotion, commitment and togetherness.

The Wedding Car- The New Volkswagen Beetle 1.2 TSI [DSG]

From the many car reviews that we have done, you would probably be able to guess that we are very big fans of hatchback cars and that is the reason why we purposely chose to have a Volkswagen Beetle to be our wedding car. I know there is the Mini Cooper but we personally feel that nothing can beat the timeless classic of a Volkswagen Beetle. Elegant yet drives sporty, we are really glad to have the Volkswagen Beetle because our plushies that comes from Germany [the NICI Wedding Bride and Groom Sheep] matches the classic German car!

Just so you know, our entourage cars were all hatchbacks [Kia Picanto & Honda Jazz] too.

You can read our review of the Volkswagen Beetle here.

The Wedding Live Band- Juni Goh and Band

We first met Juni at Saint James Powerhouse where he was performing and we really liked his style and the splendid performance that he put up. Straightaway, we approached him that night, engaged him to perform at our wedding banquet, and it was the best decision that we had ever made to hire them.

Why?

All our guests were full of praises for Juni and his band and were rushing to get his contact after our wedding banquet.

If you are looking around for a live band for your wedding, you might want to consider Juni and his band; and if you want to have a preview of Juni and his band, you can hear them sing at Shuffle on every Monday and Wednesday at 8pm; and Switch on Thursday and Saturday at 8pm and 9.30pm respectively.

Desserts Table- Sooperlicious Halal Cakes Singapore

We initially arranged and confirmed with a baker for our desserts table at the wedding but because we had to wait so long for a response and were worried about the possibility of a no-show, we decided to engage Sooperlicious Halal Cakes Singapore to bake some sweet and delectable desserts for our guests.

To be honest, we were extremely impressed with the overall setup of the desserts table for our wedding and Hana and her team of bakers were very meticulous and detailed when setting up our desserts table. The table décor matched our nautical wedding theme perfectly and we were just so amazed.

Not only does the desserts table looks good, the desserts taste just as good because we saw our guests helping themselves to multiple servings of macarons and cheese tarts! Just so you know, Sooperlicious Halal Cakes Singapore has a baking studio and retail store operating at Block 144, Tampines Street 12, #01-390 and both Jacqueline and I are definitely thinking of going there to pick up some baking lessons soon!

If you are interested to engage Sooperlicious Halal Cakes Singapore or to find out more information, do like their Facebook Page!

The Photo Booth- SG Media

There’s no doubt about it; we wanted our wedding to be fun for our guests and so, to liven things up during the cocktail reception, we engaged Gary from SG Media to set up a photo booth that employs green screen technology. Gary was very helpful when responding to our enquiries.

He advised us on the background that we could use for the photo and he even went the extra mile by giving us ideas for the photo booth. We are really happy that our guests enjoyed themselves and had fun at the photo booth

Actual Day Videography and Photography- Big Boss Production

Melvin & Jacqueline 2015 Wedding Highlights Video from Melvin Lee on Vimeo.

Needless to say, we were very pleased with them as they were very accommodating to our needs. For the actual wedding day photography and videography, it cost us SGD$2500.

Wedding Favour- Mrs Prachi Garg, Founder of Je ‘taime Perfumery

In one of our blog posts about the Singapura: 700 years exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore, Mrs Prachi Garg, Founder of Je ‘taime Perfumery, was the person behind the special scents that depict Singapore’s colourful history and much to our surprise, she was very kind to sponsor handmade perfumes for all our wedding entourage and guests!

If you are interested to learn how to make your own handmade perfume, Mrs Prachi Garg is definitely the right person as she conducts perfume-making workshop too!

Now that we have given you so much insights to our nautical-themed wedding, do note that this guide is by no means exhaustive and if you have any questions for us, please feel free to drop us your comments or send us an email. 🙂

Have fun planning your wedding and while you’re busy planning for the big day, don’t forget to enjoy the process of it too!

Smells evoke memories and since time immemorial, smells have served as memory markers. For some, these memories could be nostalgia, love, or even trauma. As our island develops and matures through the last 700 years, its colourful history can be categorised into different periods where certain moods and emotions prevail.

Image Credits to Je ‘taime Perfumery

If you grew up in 1970s Singapore, the smell of calamine lotion might bring back childhood memories of a warm day because the pink suspension was liberally applied by mothers to soothe prickly heat.

Now, here’s your chance to relive Singapore’s history through your nose!

To enable visitors to experience the dormant mood of different eras, the National Museum and Je t’aime Perfumery have worked together to create a scent to symbolise each of them. If you have ever wondered what it must feel like to live in a particular era in Singapore, you can now experience it at the National Museum.

With input from Museum volunteers, curators, Mrs Prachi Garg, and Je t’aime Perfumery; special scents are created and curated to give visitors this added sensorial dimension to experience SINGAPURA: 700 Years.

These signature scents will be displayed at different locations in all the galleries at the Museum. They range from a musky Ancient Singapore to a spicy Colonial Singapore. Visitors can also take a whiff of Independent Singapore, a refreshing fruity scent that captures the energy of a nation gearing to surge forward and grow.

Image Credits to Je ‘taime Perfumery

Personally, what left a deep impression on me was Fear, an unpleasant smell to represent uncertain times, which can evoke negative emotions.

Image Credits to Je ‘taime Perfumery

Recalling the creation process, Mrs Prachi Garg also lets on that the Singapore Stone was the most difficult to create, as the stone could only be seen along our coasts during low-tide.

Besides this display, Mrs Prachi Garg will also be organising a ‘Perfume Workshop’ where Singaporeans can create their own idea of a ‘Scent of the Nation’ on 2 May 2015 at the National Museum.

Do take note that the “Scent of a Nation” Workshop is chargeable at SGD$40 and it will take place from 10:00am to 12:30pm and registration is required. At this moment in time, tickets are selling pretty fast so if you are keen to sign up, don’t hesitate any longer.

Image Credits to Je ‘taime Perfumery

At the “Scent of a Nation” Workshop, each participant will get the chance to learn the techniques of perfume making and how to mix different ingredients to create their own unique Scent of the Nation.

Also, before the workshop, participants will have a chance to join the museum-volunteers on a guided tour to smell their way through Singapore’s history and experience Singapore’s transformation from a humble fishing village to the pride of an empire, before becoming an independent nation-state that she is today.

And the best part of the workshop?

Each participant gets to keep a 75ml bottle of the perfume that they create during the workshop. If you are interested to sign up for the event, please do so because I assure you that it is going to be a really enjoyable time.

Jacqueline and I were very privileged to have been invited to A Night of Magic at Raffles Hotel Singapore with Joe Labero and it was really a delightful time for the both of us; especially when the both of us are so busy tying up the loose ends for our upcoming wedding.
It is not the first time that Joe Labero has performed in Singapore, especially after his resounding Incanto performances held at Resorts World Sentosa in 2013 and A Night of Magic held at Raffles Hotel Singapore in 2014.

Returning to Singapore with a brand new fiery show in 2015 and assisted by the hottest guest performers and fire artistes, the Burnt Out Punks; Joe Labero continues to put up such a fantastic show that we were indeed mind-blown.

Our Personal Opinion/Review of A Night of Magic at Raffles

The first illusion/magic trick that Joe Labero performed during the show left a pretty lasting impression on us because Joe Labero suddenly appeared on a gigantic motorbike out of nowhere. This was one of the many tricks that left us scratching our heads trying to figure out how on earth he did those outrageous and unbelievable tricks.

To avoid spoiling the surprise for you, we won’t reveal any more details but really, some of the illusions are very spectacular and you will be very surprised. However, I have to admit that some of the tricks performed by Joe Labero are quite common and have been performed before by other magicians too.

Nevertheless, with a number of illusions that are quite awe-inspiring and spectacular, you just have to watch this four-time Merlin Award Winner’s hypnotising illusions that will leave you bedazzled.

Don’t miss this chance to catch Joe Labero live in action as he will only be here in Singapore for just 3 more shows!

If you are interested, you can book your tickets through SISTIC.
