Travelling solo as a woman can be rather daunting. But the reality is, there are many women who travel solo and are more independent and confident because of it!

Courtesy of YOTEL Singapore, here are the top 5 must-dos for ladies who are embracing solo travelling for the first time:

1.  Stay In Touch & Connected

When you’re travelling alone, it’s always important to keep your loved ones updated on your whereabouts. Dealing with a bad connectivity or limited internet access can be frustrating, especially during talk time, so be sure to check your lodging’s internet capabilities. YOTEL Singapore, for instance, offers unlimited and super-strength WIFI for all guests – so, you won’t have to worry about the internet being patchy when you on a video call with mum.

2.  Location! Location! Location!

We all know that picking a good location to stay is important, but even more so when you’re travelling alone for the first time. Staying in a city centre can definitely help you feel more secure, and it’s a great spot that’s typically walking distance from public transport. Take YOTEL Singapore for example, it’s situated in the heart of Singapore’s shopping district and just minutes away from buses and trains – easy peasy!

3.  Be A Smart Packer & Pack Light

Packing light doesn’t mean looking like a hobo, you can still take your cute outfits along, but striking a balance is key! Pack a good mix of clothes and shoes suitable for activities that you’re planning to do – adventures, nightlife or a trip to the museum – and bring pieces that you can mix and match to wear them in more than one way. Rolling your clothes instead of folding them is also another great way to save on baggage space. And of course, apart from a girl’s beauty essentials, skip the shampoo, soap and conditioner which hotels like, YOTEL, readily provide.

4.  Always Have A Plan B

Ask any seasoned traveller and they’ll tell you that nothing ever goes to plan. Be it getting lost or going to a museum that happens to be closed, it’s always important to be prepared and have a Plan B so that you don’t waste time researching during your trip. Also remember to always keep important names, addresses and numbers on hand – grabbing the hotel’s business card at the reception is a quick way to do this and it certainly comes in super handy if you don’t speak the local language.

5.  Embrace Meeting New People!

Travelling solo doesn’t have to be lonely. There are always plenty of opportunities to make new friends while you’re exploring a new city. The best place to start could even be in your hotel lobby! Have a chat with them and who knows, maybe you’ll end up exploring the city together. You could also join a tour to mingle with other tourists or join online travel communities like Meetup or Facebook groups to see if they organise events in the area that you’re travelling to. By the end of your trip, you’d have met a whole new bunch of people!

Last but not least, always trust your gut. If you’ve got a sinking feeling that something isn’t right, then it probably isn’t, so always be on your guard!

Psst… I just have to share this with you!

The entertainment industry is not for the faint-hearted. The road to fame and fortune is littered with broken dreams and for every success story, there are a thousand people who never made it as a professional actor. This is not to say you won’t ever make a living in the industry, but it’s important to maintain a sense of realism. Most successful actors spend many years in the wilderness before they score their lucky break – and often, “luck” is what it takes to be a success.

Despite the trials and tribulations that you will almost certainly face in your quest to be an actor, with talent and determination, you can have a career treading the boards on stage or on a TV or movie set. Here’s what you need to know to get your career off to a flying start.

Start Early

If acting is in your blood, you will be a performer from a very young age. You are unlikely to go into the industry if performing in front of an audience makes your blood run cold; so take every opportunity to score parts in school plays, amateur theatre groups, and any other venues where you can hone your talent.

Learn the Right Skills

Acting is a job like any other, so you will need the right skills. Going to drama school is a tried and tested route into the entertainment industry, so if you are still at school but have a burning desire to act, now would be a good time to look at suitable schools where your talent can be nurtured. This acting school can help mould you into a performer – they offer day and night classes and you can pay weekly.

You don’t need to be a young and gifted entertainer to benefit from acting classes. Anyone can sign up. It’s a great way to learn new skills and learn about up-and-coming casting calls. You may even be spotted by a casting director, agent, or producer!

Build a Resume

The more experience you have, the better, so apply for as many acting jobs as possible. Even if you aspire to work in the theatre, don’t dismiss other types of work, as all experience counts. A full resume is much better than a sparsely populated resume unless you are just starting out, of course.

Hire an Agent

In the early days, you won’t need an agent, but if you take your career seriously, an agent will prove invaluable. Their job is to maximise their network of contacts in the industry to get you auditions for suitable roles. Many auditions won’t be advertised, so without an agent, you wouldn’t know about them.

Network

Work hard to build a network of contacts within the industry. Thanks to social media, this is now easier than ever. Build your brand by creating a website and keeping it updated with news, links to your work product, and anything else that might catch the eye of a producer or casting director.

If acting is your dream, don’t give up. You will have your chance to shine!

When I first heard about the District Race, I have to be honest that I raised my eyebrows slightly as I wasn’t sure what to expect. In fact, I even questioned whether I should participate in the race at all. Having completed the District Race Singapore 2018, I have to be upfront that I truly enjoyed the race and it is definitely one of the best race events that I have participated till date. With over 80 virtual checkpoints and challenges spread over five districts, there was never a dull moment and the best part is that I get to spend some meaningful time with Jacqueline to explore Singapore’s many nooks and crannies.

District Race Singapore 2018 #weareallexplorers//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js

My experience as an Outdoor Educator/Outdoor Teacher has given me a bit of an advantage for the District Race as I often bring my students on learning journeys to the 5 districts of the race. Armed with the knowledge of how the route was going to be like and the kind of traffic conditions that we were expecting, Jacqueline and I skipped the Chinatown, Uptown, and Downtown districts and explored the Gardens and Kallang districts instead. This was despite the fact that the checkpoints in the Chinatown, Uptown, and Downtown districts were pretty nearby to each other.

District Race Singapore 2018 #weareallexplorers//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js

Just so you know, there was no set route or distance for the District Race Singapore 2018 and the goal of the race was to collect as many points as possible in two hours. Thus, crossing the finishing line with the best timing was really not the intent of the race and for Jacqueline and myself, we actually walked throughout so that we could see, hear, smell, touch and connect with Mother Nature at the Gardens District. Having said that, the District Race is suitable for beginners and professionals alike. If you have been cooped up in the office and have not been exercising much, the District Race is a good avenue to kickstart your fitness regime. If a healthy dose of competition is what you are after, District Race’s gamification approach will definitely spur you on.

District Race Singapore 2018 #weareallexplorers//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js

To sum up, I totally love District Race because:

  • I did not have to jostle with other race participants for running space.

  • I got to plan my own race route and set my own pace.

  • I was able to explore the places around the checkpoints without worrying too much about time.

  • I had the opportunity to spend meaningful time with my race partner without any pressure to cross the finishing line in the best timing possible.

  • Most importantly, I really like the Adidas event tee-shirt!

District Race Singapore 2018 #weareallexplorers//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js

From a business perspective, the District Race has got potential to scale up and while I am not exactly sure how much it cost the organisers to execute this race event; I am pretty sure it was not as logistics/manpower intensive as other race events that I have participated in. Some observations that I noted are as follows:

  • There were not many signages/banners put up as the District Race is pretty much self-directed. All the virtual checkpoints and challenges could be found on the District Race App and this gave participants the opportunity to pre-plan their route before race day. Some costs in terms of printing signages/banners and engaging people to put up and take down the signages/banners before and after the race would have been reduced.

  • Although Event Crews were placed at strategic points to aid with the race administration, I do not see the race needing much manpower as there were no hydration points provided. Thus, with the reduced number of manpower needed to execute the race; there would also be some cost savings as well.

  • When race participants completed a set number of checkpoints, they received pings on the District Race App that rewarded them with some attractive promotions from the Race Sponsors. This is definitely a great way to market some of the products and services from the Race Sponsors and it may actually help to boost the sales of relevant products and services!

Being the world’s first urban exploration race which uses Augmented Reality and location-based technology, the District Race will be launched in Hong Kong, Australia, USA and Western Europe subsequently.

Given the opportunity, I will certainly join future District Races! Being an avid explorer myself, I will even consider flying to other countries where District Races are planned so that I can also plan a holiday there at the same time.

Kudos to the race organisers and their team for such an excellent and successful race. It has been such a long time since I enjoyed a running event where the ultimate goal is not about crossing the finish line but really to get outdoors and see, hear, and smell what the place has got to offer.

I give the District Race two thumbs up!

    McDonald’s anyone?

    Indonesia.

Is it a place you currently have on your bucket list of countries to visit?

With some of the most beautiful destinations and places to see and experiences to have, it’s easy to understand why so many people would like to go there at least once in their lifetime. There are of course other popular destinations such as Jakarta or Bali that many of us would have already heard of but while there are other places to see and many things to do in the region; here are some tips that could come in handy if you ever decide to visit Indonesia. So if you are looking for everything that you would need to know about your next holiday to Indonesia, read on to find out more.

    The Places To Visit

Indonesia as a region may have been on your bucket list, but where should you go?

There are many popular destinations within Indonesia that are worth considering. From beaches to city vibes, I thought I would share with you some of them.

    Bali

If you think Indonesia, chances that the next word to pop into your head will be Bali. One of the most popular destinations in Indonesia, Bali really needs no introduction but I am going to tell you a little bit about it anyway. Bali has long been a place for people to take vacations, thanks to the wonderful luxurious resorts that adorn the sparkly shoreline. Even then, there are also many backpackers and tourists who are on a shoestring budget but still taking in the beauty of this destination. Bali is certainly a place that rocks many buckets lists for sure. If you are looking for a more ancient Bali vibe, heading north will give you all of the thrills.

    Jakarta

Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia that is home to more than nine million people, is a sprawling city. Many people use Jakarta as a pit stop for a few days of fun and sightseeing before heading off to some of the more remote islands or the popular resort of Bali. The Kota Tui Old Town in Jakarta is definitely worth a visit. If you are planning to buy a property in Jakarta, websites like https://rumahdijual.com/gedung-dijual might be helpful. Jakarta is definitely worthy of a stop before heading somewhere for a bit of relaxation, but don’t forget that it is also a great hub for business and investment opportunities.

    Gili Islands

Want a tropical paradise, then look no further than the Gili Islands. A trio of islands between Lombok and Bali, these little gorgeous nuggets of tranquillity are not to be missed. The two smaller islands, Gili Air and Gili Meno, are quite secluded and laidback whereas the larger of the three, Gili Trawangan, is a much livelier place to see. A real hive for backpackers, the rustic bars at Gili Islands is filled with a mix of cultures and people from all over the globe.

    Lombok

Hate following the crowds? Then Lombok is the next best alternative to the ever-popular Bali. Despite its growing popularity in recent decades, most of the Eastern Island in Lombok is still underdeveloped, which makes it a real beauty for some tranquillity. With less of the commercialised bars, clubs and restaurants, and more of the rustic and simple features, Lombok is a great place if you are after some time of pure thinking space with no distractions other than the beautiful weather and ocean.

When Should You Travel To Indonesia?

One of the big considerations when travelling to Indonesia is the weather; thus make sure you travel during the best season. The best time to visit Indonesia is between May and September where the days are dry and sunny. Websites like https://www.lonelyplanet.com/indonesia/weather are especially helpful should you need more information about the current local weather in Indonesia.

The Best Things To Do In Indonesia

For some people, a holiday is often just about finding a decent sun lounger with a bar close by in a great beach resort. There is nothing wrong with that and as we have already pointed out, destinations like Bali would suit that kind of holiday style. However, if you want to see and do some of the more popular things, here are some suggestions:

    Mount Bromo

Mount Bromo is part of a collection of volcanoes that are active and is part of the Tengger Massif. It isn’t the tallest of them, but it is certainly one of the most well-known and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Indonesia. Sitting at 7,641ft high, it is certainly something to be marvelled at and definitely worthy of a visit.

    Ubud

If you are looking for something cultural, then look no further than the heart of Bali. Nestled against the stunning terraced rice fields, which are also a sight to behold, Ubud holds dance and musical performances in the city daily. If you want to learn about the Balinese culture, Ubud is definitely the place.

    Borobudur

Finally, no trip would be complete without heading to the world’s largest Buddhist temple, Borobudur. Built in the 9th century during the reign of the Sailendra Dynasty, the temple design follows Javanese Buddhist architecture, which blends the Indonesian indigenous cult of ancestor worship and the Buddhist concept of attaining Nirvana. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Borobudur is Indonesia’s single most visited tourist attraction.

While some people may be put off from travelling as far as Indonesia for a holiday, it is certainly worth the long journey. With so much to see and do, you may end up feeling like one holiday there won’t be enough. Couples, backpackers, students on GAP years or even families will all benefit from some of the amazing things this region has to offer. I certainly think it should definitely be a place for you to consider visiting in the future.

    All times local.

Singaporeans’ love for Japanese food is pretty evident and it doesn’t come as a surprise because we often see long queue lines forming outside Singapore’s top Japanese restaurants. Recently, we stumbled upon IZA, a newly-opened Izakaya Bar in the charming Siglap neighbourhood and we totally fell in love with it.

Open daily from 6 pm till 1 am, IZA offers a casual and unpretentious Japanese-styled bar and restaurant that serves affordable kushiyaki fare and drinks amidst a homey but yet modern ambience.

Designed with plenty of group seating that is perfect for families and communal dining, you can let your hair down, bond and celebrate the day over drinks and an amazingly wallet-friendly food menu.

When we were there, we tried 3 of their new and innovative creations that happen to be the crowd favourites and we were told that they sell out pretty quickly each night.

    Four-Ton Chawanmushi $4.50***

The only one-of-its-kind in Singapore, the Four-Ton Chawanmushi integrates a blend of century egg, salted egg, quail egg and the traditional chicken egg into an indulgent, steamed four-egg delight.

Fresh Whole Seabass with Home-made Chilli $28***

We definitely enjoyed this one. Oven-baked fresh whole Seabass perfectly complemented with home-made Chilli. This dish has the Sambal Chilli Stringray kind of ‘feel’ that we usually get from East Coast Lagoon Food Village.

    Otah Tamago $6.90

Otah Tamago which combines Japanese-rolled omelette with fragrant Otah from Muar. The Otah has certainly overpowered the Tamago. We wonder if IZA is up for an even more quirky kind of local creation like Chicken Rice Tamago?

We also had other delectable dishes such as:

    Table Treats

    • Grilled Oysters, 3 Pieces ($12)***
    • Grilled Avocado ($5.00)
    • Grilled Pineapple ($2.00)***
    • Stuffed Taupok Special, 1 Piece ($3.00)
    • Deep Fried Chicken Soft-Bone ($6.00)

    Skewers

    • Fresh Prawns ($3.50)***
    • Hand-made Chicken & Pork Meatball ($3.50)***
    • Chicken Mid-Joint ($1.90)***
    • Bacon Wrapped Lychee ($2.80)***
    • Lady’s Finger ($1.90)***

    Carbs

December is the time of the year that we all start to look back and reflect on our lives. You may have some fond memories of the year so far. You might have done everything you have wanted and more. But you may also be wanting to make some changes because you feel like you are at a crossroads in your life.

It is understandable. We all have moments where we wonder what life’s all about? Did we make the right career choice? Do we not enjoy going to work each day? Do we find life tough for one reason or another?

Well…life’s never always plain sailing and it is often when we go through these situations in life that we want to make the changes that will have the most impact. The new year is nearly here, and it is never too late to start thinking about the goals that we want to set. Whether it’s losing weight, getting fitter, or travelling for an extended period of time, it is about time that you start your preparation.

For those who are seriously considering an extended holiday away from your normal routine and commitments; here are ten things you need to consider:

    1. Decide On Where You Want To Go

One of the biggest and perhaps most exciting things to do when it comes to taking an extended holiday is to consider where to go. The world is your oyster, so to speak, and the options are endless. Of course, one of the big things to remember is that some countries have different guidelines and visas. You may need to think about declaring that you are going to work there and actually have a confirmation of how long you intend to stay there. Places like USA, Australia, Malaysia, and Asia are all popular choices. However, don’t just be set on one place, consider a few before you fully make up your mind.

    2. Consider Where You Might Stay And How You Might Go About It

Consider where you might stay and how you might go about it in terms of leasing, longer stays in hotels, or even mixing things up a little. Of course, leasing has its advantages because you can establish some form of routine like cooking your own food and doing the laundry. A quick look online at houses for rent in Malaysia or apartments in Australia, for example, can quickly identify whether there are savings to be made. However, you may also like the idea of hotel living, as you don’t need to worry about any day to day tasks like cleaning and cooking. A great idea would be to mix up the two.

    3. Will You Work Over There?

Another thing to think about when it comes to extended holidays is what you might do with your time. Will you be spending it sightseeing or do you want to work and experience life out there in a different working environment? Of course, the main thing to think about would be the money side of things. You need to ensure that you can afford to stay out there and working abroad can help to supplement your living expenses. However, ensure that you obtain the right visas or clearance to work before doing it to avoid getting into any kind of trouble.

    4. Make Lists

Before you travel, you may feel completely overwhelmed as departure day draws closer. Making some lists will definitely benefit you as you navigate through the tasks you need to complete before setting foot on the plane. A great tip is to have a pen and notepad close by, and every time something comes to mind, write it down, and every time you complete a task, cross it off.

    5. Be Well Researched

Making a decision on where you want to go must have you feeling elated but before you go, ensure you know all there is to know by heading on to the Internet to do a search. Blog posts and TripAdvisor reviews are valuable sources of information. Even, putting up a “ask for recommendations” status on Facebook is helpful as you may have someone in your followers or friends list who has been there before and can give you some insider info on places to eat, things to do and how to go about living there. You never know what knowledge you might pick up.

    6. Try And Go On A Healthy Lifestyle Change Before You Go

You definitely want to enjoy yourself on your trip away, and so while you are waiting for the big departure day to arrive, use the time to get healthy and change your lifestyle a bit. You certainly don’t want the guilt when you arrive and indulge in the tasty foods or desserts.

    7. Visit Your GP And Get Fully Checked Over

Another thing to add to your list is to go to your GP and get a full health check. The last thing you want is to be in a foreign country and fall ill with something that could have been prevented. Of course, things can’t always be predicted but it is better to be safe than sorry. You might also want to check if you need any vaccinations before you go to avoid any further issues when you get there.

    8. Be Organised With Your Packing

Packing may seem like a real tough task to overcome, especially because you are going away for a long time, but the best thing to do in this situation is to be as organised as possible. Another great tip is to just pack the things that you want. Once you are there, you can always buy the things you need as you go along. Here’s a list of the top 25 travel packing hacks and tips!

    9. Tidy Up Any Loose Ends Before You Go

Leaving for an extended holiday may mean that you have decided to sell your place or maybe rent it out. That might mean that you have furniture to get rid of or storage to organise. You might also need to think about paying off any odd debts you have, closing off utility accounts, and even stopping phone contracts.

    10. Cover All Angles

Finally, make sure you cover all angles before you go. Have the necessary travel insurance in place to cover you, take photocopies of your passport and identifications, print off all documents, and have them organised in a wallet for safe keeping. Make sure you can access money overseas and that you have the right accounts for spending abroad. Lastly, make sure friends and family members have your location details and itinerary.

Now you’re ready and all geared up for your extended holiday!

I hope this article has helped you to think about everything you would need to consider before taking that extended holiday. If you do find yourself thinking about doing this next year, then take that leap of faith and go for it!
