Whether you’re serving your National Service [NS] or have previously served NS, this is an important announcement for all you National Servicemen out there so please read the following information carefully and take the necessary actions to safeguard the rewards that you are eligible for!
Due to your unwavering dedication and service to the Nation, the Ministry of Defence [MINDEF] will be giving you the opportunity to enjoy SAFRA Benefits with your family members.

From now till April 2013, please look out for your NS45 eligibility letters in the mail [yes, snail mail] because you’ll get to enjoy shopping, F&B, IT/gadgets and travel benefits at 5,000 outlets islandwide! Make sure you register for your NS45 SAFRA Vouchers by 28 February 2014 as the Vouchers are only valid until 30 March 14 [I know you have till 2014 to register but it is better to register for them early so that you can get the vouchers early and use them early].

From NS45 SAFRA 2013

Here is a table showing you the amount/value of SAFRA Vouchers that you may be entitled to.

From NS45 SAFRA 2013

In addition, as you have seen from the table above, National Servicemen who are currently serving Operationally Ready National Service (ORNS), or who have completed their ORNS training cycle in full, will also be offered a free SAFRA Membership for one year. Now, being a SAFRA Member is AWESOME because you and your family members will get to enjoy tons of additional privileges and benefits on top of the vouchers that you will be receiving.

To find out what are the various privileges and benefits you get as a SAFRA Member, check out the following link:
http://www.safra.sg/Indulge/Overview.aspx

As I am entitled to SGD $80 worth of SAFRA Vouchers and a free one year SAFRA Membership, here’s what I would do!

1). Since Baby have always wanted to check out the Adventure Cove Waterpark and S.E.A Aquarium at the Resorts World Sentosa, I might use the Vouchers to offset the price of 2 Admission Tickets for the Adventure Cove Waterpark and S.E.A Aquarium at the Resorts World Sentosa. So instead of paying SGD $116, I just have to pay SGD $36!

From NS45 SAFRA 2013

OR

2). To celebrate our monthsary, I might plan a romantic date by using the vouchers to treat Baby and myself to an awesome movie experience at Shaw IMAX which cost SGD $46 and use the rest of the vouchers for a sumptuous-licious dinner at Rocku Yakiniku Japanese Charcoal Grill Restaurant.

Shaw IMAX

Rocku Yakiniku Japanese Charcoal Grill Restaurant.

OR

3). Use the Vouchers to treat my family members to a sumptuous-licious dinner at SAFRA Toa Payoh’s Kkongdon Korean Barbecue Restaurant.

OR

4). Organise a Karaoke Singing Session with my Army Buddies at SAFRA Toa Payoh’s KBOX and talk about the good ol’ army days.

[Credits to Street Directory for the Image]

There are certainly so many things I could do with the Vouchers and it is really hard deciding what I should do with it.

Maybe I should just go for Option 1 and then following which, treat my family members to a sumptuous buffet dinner at Park Royal On Beach Road Hotel because SAFRA Members are entitled to one complimentary buffet lunch or dinner with every 3 paying adults; and then after which, gather a few of my Army Buddies for a Karaoke Singing Session and utilise my SAFRA Membership at SAFRA Yishun’s Party World KTV to enjoy a 20% discount off the total bill! Now that’s more like it because I get to kill 3 birds with one stone on a single day!

Buffet Dinner at Park Royal On Beach Road Hotel

Party World KTV!

Should I proceed with this plan, I would get to spend some quiet time with Baby and show my appreciation to her for being through thick and thin with me when I enlisted for NS till the day I ORD-ed, and now, serving my Reservist. Also, I could express my gratitude to my family members for their constant support of encouragement during my time as a National Serviceman Fulltime [NSF]. Last but not the least, I get to catch up with my Army Buddies and chill-out with them while singing Karaoke. So, the NS45 SAFRA Vouchers does comes in handy and so does the complimentary 1-year SAFRA Membership.

Anyway, SAFRA does brings NSmen closer together, check out some of the activities and things that you can do at SAFRA via the following link: https://awinsomelife.org/2012/10/28/safra-toa-payoh-openhouse-2012/

So, what are you waiting for?

Hurry over to http://ns45.safra.sg/Home.aspx and register for your NS45 SAFRA Vouchers now!

Last Thursday was Valentine’s Day and we celebrated the occasion with a fabulous dinner at LENAS Restaurant. We have previously blogged about LENAS Restaurant and we have dined there quite a couple of times. Since our previous Blog entry about LENAS Restaurant was quite sometime ago, we really would like to once again share about our excellent dining experience at LENAS Restaurant and at the same time, share our review of The Wedding Diary 2 movie that we caught at Shaw Cinema.
Here’s what we ordered while we were dining at LENAS Restaurant:

Salmon Sashimi & Hoegaarden Beer

From Valentine’s Day 2013

Our Review of the Dish:
The Salmon Sashimi was quite pricey but it was well worth it because of its thickness and freshness. Surprisingly, it complemented the Hoegaarden Beer pretty well.

Chawanmushi

From Valentine’s Day 2013

Our Review of the Dish:
Chawanmushi is nothing new and it tasted rather ordinary, very much like steamed eggs. The only disappointment was that the Chawanmushi was served cold.

Cheesy Chicken Cutlet with Waffles Fries and Coleslaw

From Valentine’s Day 2013

Our Review of the Dish:
Just by looking at the picture alone, you could see that the portion is really huge! Not only that, the chicken cutlet was of the right texture and was also very flavourful. The waffle fries and coleslaw that went along with the chicken cutlet was extremely satisfying for the stomach and it definitely whets up one’s appetite.

Spicy Chicken with Corn and Salad

From Valentine’s Day 2013

Our Review of the Dish:
Well, this dish fell slightly below our expectations. The presentation of the dish was fantastic but when it comes to the taste, it was slightly disappointing because the spiciness of the chicken weren’t spicy enough. In fact, the taste of the supposedly spicy sauce was more of sweet, sour, and spicy; unlike the sambal spiciness that we expected.

Matcha Ice-Cream with Red Bean, Dumplings & Mochi and a Glass of Iced-Tea

From Valentine’s Day 2013

Our Review of the Dish:
The Matcha Ice-Cream with the Red Bean and Dumplings were a very good way to end the satisfying dinner on a high note. However, we felt that the Mochi was a tad too sticky for our liking because we had quite a hard time removing the stuck Mochi in our teeth.

Our Overall Dining Experience:
Well, we had quite a bit of mixed feelings when it comes to the food because there were some dishes that were above our expectations while there were some that didn’t. The service was as usual, tip-top, and we have always enjoyed dining at LENAS Restaurant. The price was rather reasonable and we will definitely recommend LENAS Restaurant if you’re looking for a good place to chill-out and have a great meal with a bunch of friends. We will definitely return to LENAS Restaurant to tryout some of their other dishes!

Wedding Diary 2 [2013 Movie Review]

The Wedding Diary 2 was released exactly during Valentine’s Day and I treated Baby to the movie right after our fabulous dinner at LENAS Restaurant [just as you have read above].

Movie Plot [as extracted from Shaw’s Website]:
Soon after marriage, Weijie and Zhixin face pressure to conceive. When it finally happens, amidst preparations for the Full-month celebration of the new family member, Zhixin’s dad Colin’s business meets with investment failures and he suffers a stroke as a result. Zhixin has to step up to take over Colin’s business.

Between ensuring that her mum Alison does not have a mental breakdown and tending to her young family, Zhixin has to run the company and deal with insubordination from the veterans. It pains Weijie to see Zhixin under such stress and he quits his job to be a stay-home dad.

Over in Penang, Weijie’s dad Ah Sai heeds Colin’s advice and expands his humble salted-fish business. As his workload increases and he shuttles between Singapore and Penang, the harmonious family starts to disintegrate.

Meanwhile, Alison is taken aback by the sudden appearance of Reese, who claims to be Colin’s illegitimate daughter. Zhixin cannot come to terms with having a half-sister and even suspects Reese of seducing Weijie. At the same time, Weijie faces much pressure being a stay-home dad taking care of Tou Tou. There is talk that he is living off his wife and the couple ends up in a big quarrel.

Amidst all these problems, one day, both Reese and baby Tou Tou disappear! Has Reese anything to do with baby Tou Tou’s disappearance? Will the couple overcome their differences?

Our Review of the Movie:
Personally, we found the movie quite humourous but at the same time, we also felt that it lacked the element of surprise. The plot was rather predictable and we probably had quite high an expectation of the movie that we probably felt that it didn’t match up to The Wedding Diary 1. Nevertheless, the movie touched on a topic that is rather close to our hearts and it is worth catching if you have the spare cash and time.

Here’s a photo of Aniu and Elanne Kwong when we saw them doing their movie promotion at KSL City Square, Johor Bahru.

Valentine’s Day is today and having planned for this very day three weeks ago, I am really happy that my effort is going to be paid off today. By the way, in case you’re wondering, this Blog Entry has been scheduled to be published at this time such that Baby doesn’t know that it is all a surprise. 🙂
Well, I have been thinking of doing something personalised for Baby and because I made a Heart-Shaped Swiss Roll Cake last December, I decided to bake her a Heart-Shaped Chocolate Chiffon Cake for this Valentine’s Day.

This was the Heart-Shaped Swiss Roll Cake that I made last December. Not sure if anybody wants the recipe but I will probably blog about it when I have the time.

From Heart Shaped Swiss Roll Cake 2012

& this is the Heart-Shaped Chocolate Chiffon Cake that I made to celebrate Valentine’s Day with Baby.

From Valentine’s Day 2013

Again, I’m not very sure whether I would want to blog about how I made the Heart-Shaped Chocolate Chiffon Cake and I will probably do so if there are tons of people asking me for the recipe.

Besides the Surprise Heart-Shaped Chocolate Chiffon Cake, Baby and I are having our Valentine’s Day Dinner at LENAS [Serangoon NeX] and a Bottle of our favourite Moscato D’Asti to go along with our dinner. So romantic right?! [hehe]. If you’re wondering why we chose to go to LENAS, it’s because we absolutely loved the place, the food, and the people.

We have blogged about LENAS before so you can check out our review via the following link: https://awinsomelife.org/2011/08/18/lenas-restaurant-nex/

Also, we have blogged about our favourite bottle of Moscato D’Asti by G.D Vajra and you can find out more about it via the following link: https://awinsomelife.org/2012/12/02/we-have-a-bottle-of-moscato-dasti-g-d-vajra-to-giveaway/

What’s Valentine’s Day without gifts right? So during the third day of Chinese New Year [while Baby was still sleeping soundly in bed], I headed over to Raffles’ Cards n Such to buy NICI’s Jolly Mah Sheep Bride and Groom.

I’m pretty sure she will love this gift a lot because we have a whole lot of NICI Plush Toys in my room! This is our current collection of NICI’s Jolly Mah [their Sheep Community]. They are really cute and we have even named them!

From Valentine’s Day 2013

By the way, the NICI Jolly Mah Sheep Bride and Groom was the one and only pair that was available at Raffles’ Cards n Such and I am really glad that I gotten it just in time for this occasion! They have a whole range of other NICI products too and this is perhaps the best place to hunt for NICI’s Plush Toys!

From Valentine’s Day 2013

Well, I’m pretty sure Valentine’s Day will be a blast and since this Blog Entry is a surprise as well, here’s my declaration of love for her:

Dearest Baby,

thank you for all the sacrifices that you’ve made. From the first day I met you, I knew that you were the one for me. Having gone through so much in our relationship over the last two years, I really do treasure and cherish the time that we spend together. I still remember those days when I was still in Officer Cadet School [OCS] during National Service [NS] and how you would always come over to my place to prepare with me, the cyalume sticks and dummy grenades that I need for my outfield training. In every milestones of my life, whether its NS, OCS, or ORD; you were there with me and I really appreciate having you in my life.

You have taught and shown me what “it is more blessed to give than to receive” means and because of you, I have also learnt the importance of finance management. Well, on this Valentine’s Day, I hope that you like what I have prepared for you and I look forward to spending the rest of my life with you, every single day, every single minute. Happy Valentine’s Day! Love you!

With Much Love,
dEaRdEaR

Well, I hope this isn’t mushy for all you readers.

On a separate note, 3 of our Winsomelifers should be receiving the Sticky Ties tomorrow on Valentine’s Day and we really enjoyed organising the giveaway that was proudly sponsored by Sticky Ties. Baby recently bought a coupon deal to dine at Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant and it was our second time dining there.

For our 2nd dining experience at Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant, we had the Ala Carte Dim Sum Buffet and it cost SGD $14.30++ per person.

From Nanxiang Steamed Buns 2013

There were 52 items on their Ala Carte Dim Sum Buffet Menu and honestly, we felt that the food weren’t that fantastic.

Our Review of the Ala Carte Dim Sum Buffet:
In total we had 18 dishes out of the 52 dishes that were offered on their Ala Carte Dim Sum Buffet Menu and we personally felt that the dishes were pretty average and there were nothing much that was worth mentioning. However, if you intend to give your loved ones/friends a rather filling treat but one that lacks the quality, you can consider purchasing the coupon deal when it is available. Do also note that the price you pay for the coupon is not inclusive of the 10% service charge and 7% GST; hence, you will still have to pay after dining at Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant. To save more money, you can request not to have the wet towels and the pickles. 🙂

Baby and I are BIG FANS of Domino’s Pizza and we have been dining there more often than not [about once every 2 weeks] to satisfy our huge cravings for Domino’s Pizza and their awesome Chocolate Lava Cake! So, all thanks to omy Blog Club and Domino’s Pizza, I had my fill of Domino’s Pizza this week when omy Blog Club extended an invitation to attend a ‘makan’ session at Domino’s Pizza [Kovan Outlet] with other Bloggers!
Being the only guy at the event made it a little bit awkward but at least I found out [at the last minute] that Diana, a fellow Blogger [whom was in my team during Nuffnang’s Awana Genting Trip] was at the event as well.

While waiting for the rest of the Bloggers to arrive, some of us whom were early read the Press Kits first and I was quite surprised to find out that all of us were given a dining coupon for a complimentary set of value meal from Domino’s Pizza! Very generous of Domino’s Pizza indeed!

We have been to Taang Shifu Restaurant quite a couple of times and it is a restaurant that we frequently dine at [for dinner] whenever we go to KSL City Mall in Johor Bahru.
Well, during our recent visit to Johor Bahru, we went to Taang Shifu Restaurant for dinner and to our surprise, their entire menu has changed and some of the old dishes that we usually ordered were no longer available on the menu. Since we had quite a couple of positive experiences dining there, we decided to give their new menu a try.

Here are the dishes that we ordered for dinner:

1. Stewed Pork Rice with Brown Rice

From Taang Shifu 2013

Our Review of the Dish:
The texture of the brown rice was acceptable but the entire dish lacked the flavour. The stewed pork was rather dry and the portion was rather small.

2. Dry Vermicelli with Sliced Abalone and Shitake Mushroom

From Taang Shifu 2013

Our Review of the Dish:
To our amazement, this dish is exactly the opposite of the Stewed Pork with Brown Rice. The portion is really huge and the vermicelli is of the right texture, flavour, and taste. However, it would be good if they have added in other ingredients that would probably enhance the presentation and nutritional value of the dish.

3. Stir-Fried Broccoli with Sliced Abalone, Scallops, and Red Dates

From Taang Shifu 2013

Our Review of the Dish:
The texture of the broccoli was rather hard and some of them were quite raw tasting. The presentation of the dish was generally alright.

4. Smoked Duck Meat with Jellyfish

From Taang Shifu 2013

Our Review of the Dish:
The texture of the duck meat was alright and easy to chew. Also, the duck meat was rather flavourful. However, because of the fats present in the duck meat, there was literally oil all over the serving dish and the presentation could do with some improvements.

For Beverage, we ordered our usual Luo Han Guo with Longan and Sea Coconut.

From Taang Shifu 2013

Our Review of the Beverage:
The taste is still the same and we still love it just the way it is. We highly recommend this drink if you’re looking for something that is sweet-tasting and will quench your thirst.

Our Overall Dining Experience:
To be really honest, the level of service standard has dropped quite a fair bit and we were quite disappointed because our previous experiences were rather positive. With the new menu, we felt that there wasn’t much variety and furthermore, the prices of the dishes have gone up quite a bit too. The dining atmosphere was literally cold because of the air-conditioning and it was rather uncomfortable. On the whole, we spent about SGD $35 and we really hope that the management would consider a review of their new menu. By the way, Taang Shifu has a new outlet at City Square Shopping Mall so you can try dining there instead of making a trip all the way down to KSL City Mall.

Here’s the link to our review of Taang Shifu that we previously wrote about: https://awinsomelife.org/2012/07/17/taang-shifu-ksl-city/

On a separate note, we went to Kim Hair Studio at KSL City Mall, Johor Bahru for a haircut [since Chinese New Year is 14 days away] and I must say, it was a rather positive experience. Here’s a before-haircut photo of me.

From Taang Shifu 2013

And here’s a after-haircut photo of me!

From Taang Shifu 2013

It’s quite a transformation and I really love my haircut! Looks like I have found a new permanent place to have my haircut! And well, I also bought a Kerastase Hair Shampoo and a Loreal Tecnic Hair Clay from the Salon at a price of SGD $32 and SGD $20.50 respectively. And oh, my haircut cost SGD $27 only. Pretty worth it! 🙂

If any of you noticed, we have not been blogging much and no, we’re not giving up blogging totally; it’s just that we don’t have the luxury of time to blog due to our busy work schedules. Nevertheless, most of our blog posts this year will be rather personal and occasionally, you might get to see sponsored blog posts for the various brands that we’re writing for.
Anyhows, we are really happy that as of now, there are 73 Winsomelifers whom have signed up for our Winsomelifer’s Programme and for our current giveaway that is ending in 10 days time, we have received more than 55 entries! So really, here’s a big “Thank You!” to all you Winsomelifers for supporting us all the way.

In this blog entry, I will be blogging about my recent trip to Ipoh.

Three weeks ago, I went back to Ipoh with my family to attend my cousin’s wedding and the entire trip was a blast. The last time I’ve been to Ipoh was many years back and though I don’t really recall much of the past, this recent trip back to Ipoh left quite a lasting impression on me.

Ipoh is the capital city of Perak state, Malaysia and it is approximately 200 km north of Kuala Lumpur on the North-South Expressway. When I was there during my recent trip, I personally felt that the city was laid-back and the pace of living is not as fast as Singapore. So, if you’re looking for a very laid-back and relaxed kind of getaway, you might want to consider visiting Ipoh.

Since I have previously blogged about the first day of my stay in Ipoh, this blog post would very much touch on the second day of my stay in Ipoh.

Before the wedding “gate-crashing” ceremony, we went to a nearby roadside stall to have breakfast and I really like the laid-back feel of the city.

From Ipoh Trip 2012

In Malaysia, apparently all of the “kopitiam” [coffee] shops are known as “restoran” [restaurants] but they are really unlike the Singapore kind of restaurants where there’s air-conditioning and waiters.

From Ipoh Trip 2012

Ipoh “Restaurant” [more commonly known as “Kopitiam” to us]

From Ipoh Trip 2012

So for breakfast that morning, I had the Penang Fried Kway Teow [Wat Dan Hor Style].

From Ipoh Trip 2012

The Penang Fried Kway Teow [Wat Dan Hor Style]. To be honest, the food wasn’t that bad and I kinda enjoyed it. The only exception was the prawns. For some reason, the prawns had a rather odd taste that smelt as if it has been left to decay for days and this didn’t happened at just one store in one location; in fact, I tried the prawns at many different stores at different locations but they had the same fishy or “decaying” smell.

From Ipoh Trip 2012

Here’s a photo of my cousin, Ryan, enjoying his bowl of Laksa.

From Ipoh Trip 2012

As usual, I try not to miss out on the Iced Ipoh Coffee in the morning because the white coffee is unlike the white coffee that is available here in Singapore.

From Ipoh Trip 2012

After our rather filling breakfast, we went over to my Cousin’s place to witness the “gate-crashing” ceremony and it was quite an enlightening moment.

The “sisters” of the bride were very ready to sabotage the groom and his entourage from entering the gates.

From Ipoh Trip 2012

Having braved the first few challenges and sabotages by the “sisters”, the groom and his entourage tried to convince the “sisters” to let them in.

From Ipoh Trip 2012

and well, without any doubts, the groom and his entourage did a fantastic job and here’s a photo of the bride and groom journeying to the bridal car.

From Ipoh Trip 2012

the bride and groom posing for a photo in the bridal car before leaving for the groom’s place.

From Ipoh Trip 2012

after a rather eventful morning, I went for a mini cyber-gaming competition with my brothers and cousins at one of the nearby cyber-cafes before heading back to our serviced apartment to rest. Needless to say, gaming is not my cup of tea and I lost in most of the matches.

Having prepared and rested enough, we got ready for the wedding banquet and walked to the restaurant from our serviced apartment [it was a 5-minutes walk].

And well, all the cousins were allocated to a table right at the very front near the stage and thank God for that because I managed to capture quite a number of good photos with my trusty iPhone 5 Camera.

From Ipoh Trip 2012

my two brothers posing for a photo and pretended that they were reading the dinner menu.

From Ipoh Trip 2012

as with all Chinese wedding banquets, the proceedings were pretty much SOP [standard operating procedures] so I shan’t really elaborate much into it.

From Ipoh Trip 2012

Well, this concludes day 2 of my stay in Ipoh and in the next few upcoming blog entries, I will share about the various attractions in Ipoh that are worth checking out.

Last year, before the year came to a close, Yvonne [Director of Singapore Polytechnic‘s Communications Department] graciously hosted a Bloggers’ Appreciation Dinner at NYDC [Holland Village] for all the Bloggers whom attended SPeLL’s 1st Anniversary.
It was nice catching up with some of the Bloggers whom were there at the dinner and we had a rather enjoyable evening.

Well, it was my first time dining at NYDC [a.k.a New York Dessert Cafe] and though I have always wanted to dine there, I haven’t had the opportunity until this invitation by Yvonne.

The outer appearance of NYDC is rather chic-looking and rather appealing. In fact, this picture of NYDC doesn’t really look like it is taken in Singapore.

From Bloggers’ Appreciation at NYDC 2012

Since we had a fair bit of time before the dinner, Baby and I were checking out their menu at the hostess stand and we found out that NYDC serves mains like Pastas and Pizzas too.

From Bloggers’ Appreciation at NYDC 2012

When we went into NYDC, the interior design and ambience of the cafe was rather neat, tidy, and organised! It has such a clean and cosy feel to it and whether you’re dining with a partner or with a group of friends, NYDC definitely can cater to both small and big groups of people.

From Bloggers’ Appreciation at NYDC 2012

NYDC also has mains like Fish & Chips, Steaks, and Grilled Chicken.

Since the festive promotion was still ongoing at that time, I decided to place an order for the Roastilicious Spatchcock; and for an additional $5.50, I completed my meal with a Soup of the Day, a Soft Drink, and a Scoop of Ice-Cream.

While waiting for the food to arrive, here’s a candid shot of me that Baby took.

And finally, the food arrived…

Cream of Mushroom Soup– The Cream of Mushroom Soup wasn’t as fantastic as I expected it to be. It has a “Campbell” kinda taste to me.

The Sprite– Nothing much to explain about the Sprite because all Sprite taste the same.

Baby had the Baked Prawns Pasta

and here’s the Roastilicious Spatchcock that I ordered

From Bloggers’ Appreciation at NYDC 2012

to be really honest, the soup and mains weren’t fabulous. It was below average and nothing much to rave about. However, the desserts are on the other end of the spectrum and they were rather tantalising.

This is the Scoop of Chocolate Ice-Cream that I had. Yummilicious!

From Bloggers’ Appreciation at NYDC 2012

For desserts, Baby and I shared a slice of the Boo Boo Cake and it is basically a chocolate cake with piped swirls of light whipped cream. On a side note, the piped swirls of light whipped cream tasted like marshmallows to me.

After the filling dinner, Yvonne gave everyone of us a rather unique gift and well, it is a bottle of perfume that is specially formulated by the Students whom are studying Perfumery & Cosmetic Science in Singapore Polytechnic.

From Bloggers’ Appreciation at NYDC 2012

The perfume, known as Romance II Singapore comes in a pair [one for the men and one for the ladies] and it is even available at the Duty Free Shop [DFS] at the airport.

From Bloggers’ Appreciation at NYDC 2012

So now we know, that there is even such a course [Perfumery & Cosmetic Science] that is available in Singapore Polytechnic! Pretty interesting huh!

Anyways, it was a fabulous evening with all the Bloggers and the team of awesome people from Singapore Polytechnic and we really want to thank Yvonne for hosting and inviting us to the dinner. We look forward to more of such gatherings soon!

Continuing from where I left off in Part 1 about the Sands SkyPark and Gardens By The Bay, I will only be blogging about Yan Palace Restaurant due to the large number of photos involved in this Blog Entry.
Yan Palace Restaurant is a Chinese Restaurant that my family frequently patronise. Though Yan Palace Restaurant has two outlets [one at Warren Golf & Country Club, and the other at Hong Lim Complex], we often go to the one at Hong Lim Complex due to its accessibility.

To celebrate my Uncle’s birthday, my Dad booked the VIP KTV Room and before the dinner, Baby went to plan the surprise that we were going to give my Uncle.

Baby went to buy a huge gigantic birthday card, snapped a photo of everyone using a Polaroid Camera, and she pasted the photos onto the card with all our well-wises written on it.

From Relatives’ Trip to SG 2012

As mentioned, my Dad booked the VIP KTV Room at Yan Palace Restaurant and that is exactly the unique dining experience that Yan Palace Restaurant offers. We could all eat and sing Karaoke at the same time. Also, their song list is regularly updated so finding the latest songs isn’t of an issue.

From Relatives’ Trip to SG 2012

The VIP KTV Room at Yan Palace Restaurant is huge! It is able to accommodate a table for 10-12 people and there are sofas around for a casual chill-out.

From Relatives’ Trip to SG 2012

To be honest, the 8 dishes of Chinese food we had weren’t exactly the best. The quality of food was rather average, so don’t expect anything out of this world.

We had this Cold Dish Combination…

Braised Shark Fins Soup…

Roasted Duck…

Steamed Fish…

Fried Tau Pok and Beancurd Roll…

Fried Prawns…

Braised Conpoy with Vegetables…

Lotus Seeds with Pumpkin & Pearls…

Again, there is nothing to rave about the food. I reckoned the reason why many people often dine here is because of the KTV system and the large chill-out space.

From Relatives’ Trip to SG 2012

So anyways, we celebrated my Uncle’s birthday with a surprise Mango Cake that Baby bought.

My Uncle’s very happy face when he saw the huge gigantic card with all our photos and well-wishes. [Mission Accomplished]

We sang one last song before we concluded the evening.

On a separate note, if anyone has noticed, the frequency of us updating our Blog is getting lesser and lesser but that doesn’t mean that we are giving up Blogging entirely. Since the New Year, we have been really busy with work and though we might not be able to Blog everyday [like we used to], we will definitely have at least 3-4 Blog Posts in a week.

Also, our current giveaway of 1 Set of 5 Sticky Ties to 5 Lucky Winners is ending in 21 days time and so far, we have received 43 entries that were submitted. If you haven’t submitted yours yet, do participate in our giveaway via the following link: https://awinsomelife.org/current-blog-giveaway/

Christmas was a rather quiet affair for both Baby and I this year.
In fact, we celebrated Christmas Eve with a simple dinner at Manhattan Fish Market [MFM] Bishan Junction 8.

From Christmas 2012

Well, the service was a tad disappointing because while we were waiting in line, there was nobody that attended to us and neither were the menu presented to us. To be honest, it was totally unlike the exceptional service that we experienced when we dined at the MFM [Plaza Singapura].

[We have blogged about our previous dining experience at MFM here: https://awinsomelife.org/2012/02/29/manhattan-fish-market-plaza-singapura]

Since we had a voucher that was given to us by Baby’s Sister, we ordered the MFM Giant Seafood Platter for 2 and also 2 Supreme Catches which consisted of 2 bowls of Seafood Chowder and 2 Beverages.

This is the Seafood Chowder.

From Christmas 2012

Our Opinion: We personally find the chowder to be quite thick and while the texture was acceptable, the chowder definitely lacked the flavour that we were expecting.

The 2 beverages that we had were Cala Cala and Citrus Mint.

From Christmas 2012

Our Opinion: Both the beverages were well presented and the tastes were superb. We really like the refreshing fizziness of the Cala Cala and Citrus Mint, and we will definitely recommend them.

Presenting to you the MFM Giant Seafood Platter for 2!

From Christmas 2012

Our Opinion: We really liked this dish a lot! Not only was the portion huge, but the platter also offered a variety of food to choose from as well. The Giant Seafood Platter for 2 consisted of Fries, Fish, Calamari, Prawns, Broccoli, Carrots, Mushrooms, and Butter Rice! As the platter was quite huge, we really couldn’t finish the entire platter and had plenty of fries left over. We will highly recommend this dish if you’re looking for a wide variety of food to fill your stomach.

Well, although the service was a tad disappointing initially, it wasn’t all that bad because Yin Zheng [Trainee at MFM] and Charly [Manager at MFM] were very prompt in attending to our requests. They were very polite and courteous and we were extremely pleased with the way they served us. What we also liked about MFM was that they provided free Wifi to Guests as well! Now, that is really a plus point because not a lot of restaurants or cafes in Singapore provide free Wifi to guests. We will definitely return to MFM to dine again!

After the rather filling dinner that we had, Baby and I went to Polar Puffs & Cake Store to buy a simple mini log cake to celebrate Christmas!

From Christmas 2012

Having done all our Christmas shopping, we went home and had a simple Christmas Eve celebration with my Brother and his Girlfriend.

We opened the bottle of Angas Moscato that Baby and I bought from Changi Airport’s Duty Free Store.

From Christmas 2012

While counting down to Christmas, we had a simple game of Roulette.

From Christmas 2012

And because Roulette was getting too boring, we decided to just chill and relax by chatting and drinking our hearts out.

From Christmas 2012

When it was close to 12 midnight, Baby brought out the log cake.

From Christmas 2012

and well, I had the honour of cutting the log cake. Machiam like celebrating birthday.

From Christmas 2012

The mini log cake that we bought from Polar Puffs & Cake Store was surprisingly superb!

From Christmas 2012

After downing 3 bottles of Moscato, all of us went to bed tired but happy.

To celebrate Christmas, we caught a movie at Golden Village [GV] Vivo City.

We caught CZ12, a film by Jackie Chan at GV Max and it was said that the Dolby Atmos Sound System would provide cinema-goers a rather immersive kind of movie experience. Well, I honestly couldn’t sense any difference in sound or cinematic experience and I guess this might be due to the technology being quite new and that movie producers have yet to embrace and incorporate this new technology into their films.

Here’s the Movie Plot of CZ12 [as extracted from GV‘s Website]:

Jackie Chan’s spectacular new adventure takes him all the way from the chateaux and vineyards of France and the hidden dangers of a jungle on a South Seas island to the terrors of a fight in free-fall above an active volcano! The story is sprung on a quest to track down six bronze sculptures, originally part of a set of twelve representing the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. The sculptures were looted from the Summer Palace in Beijing when the city was sacked by European armies in the 19th century, and there’s an international campaign in progress to demand the return of stolen cultural treasures to their countries of origin. But Jackie plays a soldier of fortune, not a high-minded patriot. He’s in it for the money. But as events take unexpected turns and strange alliances take shape, motives begin to change …

Globe-trotting soldier-of-fortune JC is hired by shady antiques dealers to track down six missing bronze animal-heads by any means necessary. The six bronzes originally formed part of a set of twelve, representing the animals of the Chinese Zodiac, forming part of a fountain in the old Summer Palace outside Beijing; they were looted and dispersed when Anglo-French armies sacked the Summer Palace in 1860. JC and his crack team of assistants first head to France, where two of the bronzes are believed to be held in a private collection. The operation to ‘liberate’ the bronzes from a heavily guarded Chateau brings JC into an uneasy alliance with Coco, a Chinese student in Paris, who is active in a global movement which campaigns for stolen cultural treasures to be returned to their homelands. Along the way, JC makes an enemy-for-life of Pierre, the chief of staff at the Chateau Marceau, and an unexpected friend of Katherine, a bankrupted aristocrat whose home contains another of the missing bronzes. The trail next leads JC and his team, now including Coco and Katherine, to a forgotten tropical island in the South Seas, where two missing animal heads are found in a beached wreck. A multi-national band of pirates moves to block the team’s getaway, but JC’s skill and resourcefulness wins the day. Back home, JC is stunned to learn that his employers already had the sixth missing bronze all along, and he sets out to teach them a lesson for tricking him. Meanwhile the protest movement has persuaded buyers to shun auctions of stolen national treasures, and the shady dealers are threatening to destroy the sixth bronze in public. Will JC’s conscience – and his sense of Chinese national pride – kick in to push him to save the last bronze from destruction? The answer is played out on the slopes of an active volcano …

Our Review of the Movie:
Although CZ12 was a movie worth catching, many of the scenes were rather similar to Jackie Chan’s past films and the physical humour have been used so often that it got pretty boring. The storyline was average and the stunts that were performed were pretty predictable.

Well, many people also had the misconception that CZ12 was going to be Jackie Chan’s last movie but well, Jackie Chan has dispelled those rumours and stated that CZ12 would be his last major action movie instead. And yes, I do agree that it is about time that he “retires” from action movies especially when Jackie Chan is getting old [he’s 58 already!].

Seriously, I really admire Jackie Chan and he has made a rather strong impression on me during my growing up years. Some of his movies which I personally enjoyed were, Who Am I [Wo Shi Shei], Gorgeous [Bo Li Zun], Rush Hour, and Shanghai Noon. And what I really like about Jackie Chan was that the stunts performed in his films are real; which explains all the cuts and bruises that he sustained during filming. So well, if CZ12 is going to be Jackie Chan’s last major action movie, you should really go catch it if you’re a fan of Jackie Chan!
