Last weekend, we were at The Manhattan FISH MARKET to try their latest creation, The Manhattan Star Platter, and our taste buds had a rather tantalising time with five different types of seafood cooked in five different ways!

From now till 31st October 2013, you too can get fresh with the new star creation from The Manhattan FISH MARKET. Whether flamed, baked, poached, fried or grilled; The Manhattan Star Platter has it all and it is the ultimate manifestation of The Manhattan FISH MARKET’s philosophy that there are many great ways of serving fresh seafood with a fun-filled experience.

With five different types of seafood cooked in five different cooking methods, diners will be spoilt for choice as they tuck into the smorgasbord of tastes and flavours to invoke the taste buds.

The Garlic Herb Mussels, one of the restaurant’s favourites, are poached to preserve the moisture, juiciness and flavours so that diners can relish the seafood at its fullest. Served in the restaurant’s signature Garlic Herb sauce, diners will enjoy a side serving of baguette to mop up the sauce to its very last bit.

The Grilled Calamari is chewy and its juiciness is sealed during the grilling process.

The Fried Oysters are coated in batter to give the oysters a crunchy bite on the outside while locking in the juicy tender goodness on the inside.

The restaurant’s signature Manhattan Flaming Prawns undergo a glorious flaming process that is filled with the visual excitement of showmanship where the Sea-cret Agents perform on-the- spot flaming to bring out the caramelized sweetness of the succulent prawns.

The Mediterranean Baked Fish, one of the restaurant’s hot favourite, is essentially a dory fillet that is baked in an irresistible blend of flavourful spices and herbs in a foil. This cooking method helps to seal in the tantalising aroma and flavour that would allow each and every diner to savour the goodness of the fish right up to the very last bite.

The Manhattan Star Platter is fit for two persons and it will cost SGD$47.02 [after including 7% GST and 10% Service Charge]

If you would like to try the best of what The Manhattan FISH MARKET has to offer, the Manhattan Star Platter is one you shouldn’t miss out on. As it is only available till 31st October 2013, hurry over to the nearest The Manhattan FISH MARKET restaurants near you now!

Apart from The Manhattan Star Platter that we had, we also had Tomato Soup and……

The Gummy Bear [left] and Cala Cala [right] Drink

Personally, we found the Tomato Soup to be rather ordinary and there’s really nothing much to rave about. As for the two beverages that we had, we have to say that although the presentation is fantastic, the Gummy Bear is a tad too sweet for our liking. Out of the two beverage that we had, the Cala Cala was the most preferred choice because of its very refreshing taste.

Service at The Manhattan FISH MARKET was slightly lacking and there are definitely rooms for improvements.

In Singapore, The Manhattan FISH MARKET restaurants are located at the following locations:

Bedok Point • Bugis+ • Causeway Point • Century Square • City Square • Changi City Point • JCube • Junction 8 • Marina Square • North Point • Plaza Singapura • Star Vista • United Square • White Sands • Hougang Mall • SUNTEC City

Hope you have a fishing good time with your family members & friends!

This is one long overdue blog post but we reckoned that it would be quite timely to publish this blog entry because its the September School Holidays! So, if you’re wondering where’s the next place to have a little bit of fun in Singapore, why not check out the Adventure Cove Waterpark at Resorts World Sentosa?
A Short Video of Our Day Out @ Adventure Cove Waterpark

Jacqueline and I visited the Resorts World Sentosa Adventure Cove Waterpark sometime ago and we had lots of fun and even had a few close encounters with all kinds of fishes and stingrays too!

Our first stop for the day was Ray Bay and we really want to thank Singapore Polytechnic for giving us a pair of tickets to have a close encounter with stingrays.

The Ray Bay, a place where you can have close encounters with stingrays.

Take a look at those stingrays! In case you’re wondering, the stingrays at Adventure Cove Waterpark are perfectly safe and harmless because their barbs have been removed.

As we were the only ones at Ray Bay, we had all the time in the world to feed the stingrays and touch them. If you’re worried about the stingrays, the trained instructors are present throughout to allay your fears.

Were there any unpleasant moments with the stingrays? Not really except the fact that some stingrays might gently nibble you to ask for food. But really, the stingrays are really friendly.

Tickets to Ray Bay cost SGD$38 per person and they are subjected to availability because each session can accommodate a maximum of 6 guests. Little ones must be at least 5 years old and at least 107cm in height to participate. If your little ones are under the age of 12, they must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian and if you are under the age of 21, your parent/legal guardian must complete and sign the liability form.

After the Ray Bay encounter, we went to check out the rest of the remaining rides and attractions. For the little ones, there are play areas like these that are more mild and not so adventurous.

If you’re more adventurous, you can probably check out the Tidal Twister, Dueling Racer, and a whole lot of other fun rides!

Tidal Twister

A crowd pleaser with mild to wild transitions, Tidal Twister sends you careening down an unpredictable passage of swirls and slaloms, delivering maximum fun at maximum speed.

Dueling Racer

Grab a racer mat and take your friend on a dueling high-speed competitive plunge to the finish line. Clock the fastest time down this steep Dueling Racer and claim victory with the biggest thrill ever.

Pipeline Plunge

It’s like riding a water tornado in the dark! Experience dropping through an elevated chute that sends you careening down banked turns, radical twists and dips before splashing out in a pool of water.

Riptide Rocket

Southeast Asia’s first hydro-magnetic coaster, the Riptide Rocket is probably the most exciting and adventurous ride at Adventure Cove Waterpark. Like an intense rollercoaster on water, it combines all the powerful climbs, plunging drops, terrifying twists and tight turns to set your adrenaline pumping.

If you’re like me and you like to bummer around, you can either take a nap here…

or you can just laze on a tube and take a leisurely ride down Adventure River, floating through 14 stunning habitats including a lush jungle garden, a mysterious grotto and an underwater tunnel with a sea of marine life swimming above and around you.

Say “hello” to Uncle Ray.

Well, even if you don’t purchase tickets to Ray Bay, you can have some not really close encounters with the stingrays from the Adventure River.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to do some snorkelling at the colourful Rainbow Reef where you can enjoy some close encounters with 20,000 friendly fishes! The queue and wait might be long but it is extremely worth it!

Jacqueline posing for a photo while she snorkels away.

Our friendly snorkelling instructor whom splashed the salty cold water at us to get our bodies acclimatised to the temperature of the water at the Rainbow Reef.

Types of fishes you can try to spot at the Rainbow Reef.

A closer look at what’s underwater while snorkelling at the Rainbow Reef. Is that Nemo?

After one long day of water fun, we headed to the souvenir shop to get some souvenirs and boy, were they oh so expensive!

Fancy a Pink Dolphin?

Every time we chance upon a “Press A Penny” machine like this, we can’t help but to get a coin souvenir to keep as a momento.

Anyway, there are official photographers from Adventure Cove Waterpark whom are present to help you take photographs with their professional cameras and we highly suggest that you take as much photos as you want because you can purchase a disc that contains all the soft copies of the photos inside. Then again, the price can be rather steep and you might probably just want to waterproof your camera and snap all you want without forking out too much.

Here are the prices for the entrance tickets to Adventure Cove Waterpark!

As the food prices at The Bay Restaurant is a tad too expensive and not value for money, we decided to dine at Din Tai Fung which is located outside of Adventure Cove Waterpark but within Resorts World Sentosa.

Pork Cutlet Fried Rice @ Din Tai Fung

Xiao Long Bao @ Din Tai Fung

Lychee-Peach Prawns @ Din Tai Fung

We’ll probably write about Din Tai Fung another day but well, we had a blast at Adventure Cove Waterpark and we will definitely be visiting again!

To go or not to go?

Yes you should, for a day of wet and wild fun in the sun, come and experience it all at Adventure Cove Waterpark!

Last Wednesday, we were very privileged to have been invited to Manhattan Fish Market at The Dining Edition @ Marina Square, for a really sumptuous food-tasting session and to be honest, Manhattan Fish Market is no stranger to us as we often dine there at least once every 2 months. Furthermore, most people [including us] would agree that the food and beverage offering at Manhattan Fish Market is way better than Fish and Co.

Well, after months of absence at Marina Square due to renovations, Manhattan Fish Market recently re-opened its outlet at ‘The Dining Edition’ space in the mall with a totally brand new look which will delight diners.

[Image Credits to Manhattan Fish Market]

Diners will be greeted to a warm and cozy décor as they step into the newly renovated restaurant. As with their other restaurants, diners will always be assured of a friendly, down-to-earth, and vibrant atmosphere as they tuck in to the delicious offerings.

To celebrate this occasion, The Manhattan Fish Market invites everyone to get saucy and dive into a trio of irresistible dipping sauces with purchase of any of its three sharing platters at a special price till August 31st, 2013!

Starter
Garlic Herb Mussels [SGD$7.95++]

Poached mussels in Manhattan Fish Market’s signature garlic herb sauce and served with baguette. We like this dish a lot and we highly recommend it to people whom are into eating mussels. The garlic herb sauce is flavourful and it complements the mussels pretty well.

Baked Dish
Spicy Baked Fish [SGD$15.95++]

Savor a baked dory fillet in extra spicy marination complemented with garlic herb rice and vegetables that is guaranteed to jumpstart your senses. We highly recommend it to people whom can take spicy food because the Spicy Baked Fish might be too spicy for some people. As for us, we absolutely love it because of its tantalising taste!

Mains
Manhattan Flaming Seafood Platter [SGD$37.95++]

This platter serves up generous portions of hand-battered fish fillets, oysters, and calamari. Given the large portions, we highly recommend the Manhattan Flaming Seafood Platter for big-eaters to satisfy their growling stomachs.

Good for sharing, the Sizzling Brownie with Ice Cream is a perfect harmony of elements. Enjoy this warm sizzling brownie, topped with smooth vanilla ice-cream in sweet caramel sauce and nuts. Truly, a perfect way to a sweet ending.

The exciting flavors of Curacao and tropical fruit mix is guaranteed to liven up your senses. Simply bubbly, it is called Gummy Bear because it tastes like the Gummy Bear candies.

Stewords Riverboat is a unique and iconic non-motorised floating lifestyle venue that houses Santa Fe Tex-Mex Grill, a restaurant that serves authentic Tex-Mex cuisine; Breaking Bread, an al-fresco cafe; and a private function hall. The Riverboat was formerly located at Sentosa and it is currently moored and operating at the Marina South Pier.

Two weeks ago, we were extremely privileged to have been invited for a dinner at the Santa Fe Tex-Mex Grill Restaurant onboard the Stewords Riverboat and we really enjoyed the entire dining experience.

When we drove to the Marina South Pier, we observed that there were construction works going on around the vicinity and public transportation were hardly seen. Hence, it would be a better idea for you to drive or take a taxi to the Marina South Pier. However, do take note that the parking rates at the Marina South Pier are outrageously expensive as it cost $2.00/hr for the first 2 hours and $3.00 for the next subsequent hour from 7am to 10.30pm!

A photograph of the Marina South Pier.

At the Marina South Pier, big ships and tankers are a very common sight.

As we walked towards Stewords Riverboat, memories of my National Service days came to mind because I remembered how my platoon mates and I used to dread boarding the Penguin Ferry at the SAF Ferry Terminal.

As Stewords Riverboat is non-motorised, it has to be towed by a larger vessel if it has to move from one location to another location.

When we arrived at Santa Fe, we were warmly greeted by the awesome service crews and were shown to our dining table.

Santa Fe Tex Mex Grill is a casual-dining family restaurant that specialises in serving authentic Tex-Mex cuisine. If you’re wondering what a Tex-Mex cuisine is, it is an Americanised version of Mexican food.

After placing our food and drinks orders, Daryl from Riverboat gave us a short tour around Stewords Riverboat.

This is the private function hall in the upper deck of the Stewords Riverboat and it can accommodate up to 200 guests in a theatre setup. For a long table banquet setup, it can accommodate up to 150 guests. Whether you’re looking for a unique venue to host a private function or a corporate event, the function hall at Stewords Riverboat is an excellent option to consider. Apart from renting the function hall, a wide variety of food and beverage packages are also available to help you plan your event.

The bridge deck is where you can find the al-fresco cafe, Breaking Bread. Breaking Bread is currently open for private events and there are plans in the pipelines to revamp the entire al-fresco area into a BBQ place. When the al-fresco cafe transforms into a BBQ place in a few months time, we’re 100% sure that it will be fully booked for private parties because the al-fresco area offers a beautiful scenic view of the sea. Furthermore, there are arrangements for live band to perform at the al-fresco area and this really calls for a chill-out party!

Guests at the al-fresco cafe can enjoy the scenic view of the sea in the evening.

Ahoy Captain!

Having said so much about the various venues onboard Stewords Riverboat, let us zoom in on Santa Fe Tex-Mex Grill!

The dining ambience of Santa Fe Tex-Mex Grill is extremely cosy and homely. Whether you’re going on a date with your partner or a gathering with a group of friends, Santa Fe Tex-Mex Grill is definitely a unique and special place for dining.

If you wish to do some jamming, there’s a cosy corner that’s available and it even comes complete with a drumset.

The manager’s workspace at Santa Fe Tex-Mex Grill adds a special touch to the dining area and it’s really cool!

Here’s the bar area where drinks and desserts are being prepared!

So how does the food fare?

We ordered quite a number of dishes to share with one another and here are all the food and beverages that we had for the evening.

Fruity Flavoured Margaritas [from left to right- Lime, Kiwi, Mango, Strawberry]

Seriously, what’s a Tex-Mex meal without Margaritas? We absolutely love the flavoured Margaritas that were served and they are a real treat! Taking turns to sip all of the Margaritas, we have to admit that they are really good. The flavour and sweetness are just right and a glass of Margarita is the best way to cool down the heat especially for the hot sunny weather here in Singapore!

Appetizers Combo!

We had Cheese Nachos, Chicken Chimichangas, Turkey Quesadillas, and Buffalo Wings for appetizers and they are oh so yummy! Although I’m not a big fan of cheese, my personal favourite is the Cheese Nachos and the Turkey Quesadillas.

Tex-Mex Grilled Chicken, $23.90

A rather sinful dish, the grilled chicken breast is spread with BBQ sauce and topped with bacon and melted cheese. Served with mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables, the Tex-Mex Grilled Chicken is a satisfying dish for hungry people!

Blackened Salmon Veracruz, $23.90

The Blackened Salmon Veracruz is a very flavourful dish that tantalises the taste buds. Coated topside with crusted black pepper, the salmon fillet is then panfried and served with spicy rice and grilled vegetables with tomato compote. A dish for fish-lovers whom want to enjoy a little bit of spice in their life.

Santa Fe BBQ Ribs, [Half Rack]- $22.90 | [Full Rack]- $29.50

The baby back ribs are grilled to perfection and ladled over with Santa Fe’s signature BBQ sauce. Served with fries and house salad, the Santa Fe BBQ Ribs will definitely not disappoint.

Chicken Fajitas, [Half Pound]- $26.90 | [Full Pound]- $41.50

Santa Fe’s signature fajitas are served sizzling on a skillet, with tortillas by the side for you to self-wrap. A condiment set of shredded lettuce, sour cream, cheddar cheese, and pico de galo accompanies the dish.

Grand Marnier Brownie, $14.90

If you’re a fan of orange liqueur, we highly recommend the Grand Marnier Brownie becuase the warm chocolate brownie that is infused with a little bit of Grand Marnier will send you through the roof. Served with strawberry sauce, slices of mandarin orange, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and a cherry, there is everything to love about the Grand Marnier Brownie. You wouldn’t want to miss this lovely dessert that will complete your meal pretty well.

Walnut Brownie Sundae, $8.90

A real classic, the Walnut Brownie Sundae is a must-order for all chocoholics! Imagine biting into a warm chocolate brownie accompanied with some vanilla ice cream and chocolate fudge that melts in your mouth. The feeling you will get will be one that makes you go oomph with satisfying pleasure!

Truly, we had an enjoyable time dining at Santa Fe that is onboard Stewords Riverboat. Though the pricing may be slightly on the higher-end, the dining experience is one that you will find unique, special, and ideal for that one special moment.

If your partner or friends get seasick easily, they might want to consider popping some seasick pills before going onboard because the occasional waves from the surrounding sea vessels would send the riverboat rocking from side to side. Even for myself, my head was spinning a little when I went onboard but gradually, my body kinda acclimatised to the surroundings [or maybe it was the effects of the magaritas].

To ease your pockets a little, Jacqueline found a really awesome deal on Groupon where you can just pay $20 for $40 worth of food and beverage at Santa Fe Tex-Mex Grill. This deal is currently available for the next 3 days and the voucher is valid till 18 October 2013.

Alternatively, you might want to visit Santa Fe Tex-Mex Grill on Tuesdays because the main courses are going for a special 1-for-1 price!

Last but not the least, we would like to conclude this blog post by taking this opportunity to thank the wonderful and awesome staffs at Stewords Riverboat for hosting us. We would also like to thank Daryl from Stewords Riverboat for showing us around. We are truly humbled by the warm hospitality that we received. If you’re planning a visit any time soon, do take note that the operating hours are from Tuesdays to Sundays [6-10pm]. Reservations are highly recommended and you can drop them a line at 6278-5775.

To be really honest, I ain’t a fan of Hello Kitty and last year, when McDonald’s launched their McDonaldland Hello Kitty Plushies, the campaign did not really cause as much stir as this year’s Hello Kitty Fairy Tales.

Just how big was the hoo-hah yesterday and today?

It’s really big!

Yesterday, Jacqueline and I were in our car driving from one end of Singapore to the other end and all over the island, there were long queues of people waiting to lay their hands on the Hello Kitty Plushies. When we were at the King Albert Park McDonald’s Outlet; two Police Patrol Cars, 1 Traffic Police [TP] Bike, and 1 Land Transport Authority [LTA] Officer Bike were deployed to manage the chaotic traffic conditions at the drive-thru and this wasn’t the only isolated case that happened. In fact, it occurred at other McDonald’s drive-thru at Kallang, East Coast Park, Ang Mo Kio Park, and many more. The Police were even called in to manage disputes by the customers and that’s only one part of the problem. What happens then if there are emergencies that needs immediate attention and most of the resources have been used to attend to these minor cases?

The other problem is, why did McDonald’s allow customers to purchase 4 Hello Kitty Plushies instead of limiting it to just 1 per person? If the Singing Bone Hello Kitty Plushie is indeed a limited edition, then shouldn’t McDonald’s restrict it to 1 plushie per person so that more people could have the chance of owning it? What exactly is the rationale for allowing customers to purchase 4 Hello Kitty Plushies if it is a limited edition? While I do understand that there will be people buying on behalf of their family members and friends, it would have been better if they could just limit it to 2 plushies per person or even just limit it to 1 plushie per person so that there won’t be people taking advantage of this situation and reselling the plushies.

To McDonald’s Singapore:

All across the island, there were many people queueing up to get the Singing Bone Hello Kitty Plushies and the motives of the people were aplenty. Some of those people queuing up are genuine Hello Kitty fans and some of them could be fathers queueing up to get the plushies for their children; brothers queueing up to get the plushies for their sisters; boyfriends queueing up to get the plushies for their girlfriends; husbands queueing up to get the plushies for their wives; and whatever the motives were, I am very sure that they were doing it just to put a smile on the faces of their children, sisters, girlfriends, wives, or loved ones.

However, it is really saddening to see and hear that there are quite a number of people out there whom are trying to take advantage of the Hello Kitty Fairy Tales Promotion and gain some quick profits from it. Resellers are now selling the Hello Kitty Plushies for an exorbitant price and it is really disgusting how some people try to make a profit out of this seemingly harmless Hello Kitty campaign that you have rolled out. I really believe more could have been done to minimise the damage and it would have been better if you could increase your supplies of the Singing Bone Hello Kitty Plushies. Even though you may have brought in 40% more plushies this year as compared to previous years, the fact that you allowed each customer to purchase 4 plushies per transaction doesn’t help to alleviate the situation.

Together with other genuine Hello Kitty collectors, I am crossing my fingers and hoping that you will have a re-launch of the Singing Bone Hello Kitty plushies so that those who did not have the opportunity to own it will be able to make their collections complete. I sincerely hope that you will look into this matter and consider to re-launch the Singing Bone Hello Kitty Plushies so that it will both be a win-win situation for McDonald’s and genuine Hello Kitty collectors. Afterall, I’m pretty sure Ronald McDonald would want to put a smile on everyone’s face.

To Hello Kitty Fans:

I am not a Hello Kitty Fan but I’m an avid collector of plushies. Like you, my aim was to have a complete set of Hello Kitty Plushies so that I could display it at home but now, it looks like I have to buy it from other sources instead of sitting down at McDonald’s to enjoy a satisfying meal.

I’m hoping that McDonald’s will re-launch the Singing Bone Hello Kitty Plushies so that the rest of us could own it and make our collections complete. While I know how disappointed and upset some of you might be, please don’t be a fool and let those resellers rip you off your hard earned money. Rather, let the craze and buzz die down first and then the price will eventually normalise. From what I see, there are definitely more supplies of the Singing Bone Hello Kitty Plushies than genuine Hello Kitty collectors so if let’s say McDonald’s does indeed have a re-launch, the supplies that the resellers are hoarding onto will definitely drop in value.

Also, if you see resellers selling you the Singing Bone Hello Kitty Plushies for more than $20, please let it go. Right now, what all of us really need is a time-out so that we don’t let our minds be clouded. When the dust has more or less settled down, things will become clearer and you will be able to act rationally and not impulsively.

To add on, some of you might see that the Singing Bone Hello Kitty Plushies have been put up on bidding sites and in case you’re wondering why would anyone bid for the the Singing Bone Hello Kitty Plushies at such a high price, there are people actually rigging the system by having their own friends bidding for it. Hence, please don’t bid or buy the Singing Bone Hello Kitty Plushies for such an exorbitant price.

On a lighter note, there are sources selling the Singing Bone Hello Kitty Plushies for less than $10 but it will take some time for it to arrive in Singapore. Since we are genuine Hello Kitty collectors, I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t mind waiting as good stuffs are definitely worth waiting for. So, once you get your Singing Bone Hello Kitty Plushies, all those resellers will have no place to sell the Singing Bone Hello Kitty Plushies and they would have wasted their time, money, energy, and effort for being so greedy and kiasu. When that day comes, its your turn to stand there and laugh at the resellers.

It was my virgin trip to PasarBella and it was Jacqueline’s second time.
Having saw the awesome photographs that were taken by Jacqueline during her first trip to PasarBella, I told her that I must check it out for myself and try some of the food over there!

So, when we were there, my first mission was to conquer Oceans of Seafood and guess what I had over there?

Yes, you probably got it right! Oysters!

Oceans of Seafood was selling two types of oysters; the Canadian Fanny Bay Oysters and the Australian Coffin Bay Oysters. Both types of oysters were selling at $16 for half a dozen and $32 for a dozen. So, to get the best of both worlds, I requested for half a dozen of oysters where I had 3 Canadian Fanny Bay Oysters and 3 Australian Coffin Bay Oysters.

Canadian Fanny Bay Oysters

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

Australian Coffin Bay Oysters

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

The oysters were really fresh and I found the Australian Coffin Bay Oysters to be rather creamy. But that doesn’t mean the Canadian Fanny Bay Oysters weren’t good. In fact, I kinda like both of them so much that I wanted to order half a dozen more but was stopped by Jacqueline.

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

Since Jacqueline ain’t a fan of oysters, she opted for a more safer option by going for the prawns which were served with baby carrots, sweet corn, and smoke salmon with mayonnaise sauce.

Can you see that the prawns formed a nice heart shape?

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

Have a prawn on me!

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

Personally, I really like Oceans of Seafood for their fresh seafood and when I need to have my cravings for oysters fixed, you probably will know where to find me.

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

Following which, we went to check out Merchants at PasarBella and we had the pleasure of meeting Ainslie, whom is the General Manager.

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

Merchants offers an exciting and diverse range of award winning wines produced by small, boutique winemakers whom are mainly from Australia.

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

To top it off, the interesting collection of wines from Merchants are usually not found in other wine stores and they are shipped directly from the vineyards to Singapore. Since there’s no middlemen involved, you can be rest assured that you’re getting premium quality wines at rock bottom prices.

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

Searching for a particular bottle of wine at Merchants is really a breeze because the wines have all been neatly organised by their grape types. This certainly reminded me of the time I’ve spent at Shatec Institutes where we learnt about wine and had to take on the role of a wine sommelier.

I even had the opportunity to taste a glass of wine and I really enjoyed the fruitiness and smoothness of the wine.

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

If you’re at PasarBella and you just want a nice place to sip a glass of wine and chill-out, Merchants even has got a small little cosy corner prepared just for you.

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

To find out more about Merchants and their latest wine-tasting workshops, do check out Merchants’ Facebook Page and join their Wine Club as well! In fact, some of Merchants’ winemakers will fly halfway around the world to host regular ‘pop-up’ cellar doors at PasarBella!

For some light desserts, we headed to Bonheur Patisserie to get some macarons and we bought the salted caramel macaron and the strawberry macaron.

Strawberry Macaron

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

Personally, I really like the macarons from Bonheur Patisserie because they are not overly sweet as what some stores are selling and the portion/serving size is just right for taking small savoury bites.

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

While hunting around for some unique and awesome stuffs at PasarBella, we chanced upon Dottinghill and we were so in loved with their temporary tattoos! They had all sorts of interesting designs and the quality is really superb. For myself, I gotten a fierce-looking wolf tattoo for only $6 and it looks extremely real! I even saw a Father and Son getting the wolf tattoo and it’s really so cool!

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

If you’re into body art and you prefer not to permanently ink yourself, the temporary tattoos from Dottinghill is something that you must check out! To see more designs that Dottinghill has, you can visit Dottinghill’s Website or Dottinghill’s Facebook Page!

Our last stop at PasarBella was Le Patio and it’s rustic simplicity and homely fare is a guaranteed sensory explosion of taste, sight and smell.

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

Want to make a guess what is underneath the aluminium foil?

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

Ta-dah! It’s Le Patio’s very own Seafood Paella

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

It wasn’t our first time having Paella and it was first introduced to us by our Church friend, Jacqueline [yes, another Jacqueline whom shares the same name as Jacqueline, my Fiancée]. As our first experience with Paella was a pleasant one, we just had to give Le Patio’s Seafood Paella a try.

From PasarBella 2013- Part 2

Truly, Le Patio’s Seafood Paella is really tasty and we highly recommend it if you’re dropping by PasarBella. In case you’re wondering, a portion/box of Seafood Paella like this cost $11.90 and it’s really worth it! And if you don’t know what Paella is, it is a Valencian rice dish that originated in its modern form in the mid-19th century near lake Albufera, a lagoon in Valencia, on the east coast of Spain.

We also had the French crepes from Le Patio and it was equally yummy as we had it spread with Nutella.

When I was a young boy, shopping for groceries at the wet market with my mum was a rather dreaded affair and I dislike the weird fishy and meaty smell at the wet market. Now, with supermarkets and hypermarkets springing up like nobody’s business, the wet market is slowly becoming extinct and groceries shopping at the supermarkets/hypermarkets has become somewhat a robotic and systematic process that there’s hardly any form of enjoyment.
I have to say this, though I dislike the wet market, I do miss those times that I spent with my mum at the wet market just looking, touching, and smelling, the vegetables, fish, meat, and fruits. The produce at the wet market are definitely the freshest and honestly, you don’t really know how fresh the produce at the supermarkets/hypermarkets are because for all you know, they might have been on the shelves for days and moreover, those with cheap price tags are usually the ones that are near the expiration date.

Well, if you share similar sentiments, here’s some good news.

Just last week, Jacqueline took some time off with her family to visit PasarBella, the first multi-sensory grocery shopping destination in Singapore and it sure looks exciting after seeing the more than 300+ photos that she took.

With over 30,000 square feet of market space housing more than 30 unique stalls from around the world, PasarBella is the embodiment of its namesake, which is derived from the local term for ‘market’, and the Italian term ‘beautiful’.

From Parsabella 2013

PasarBella was conceived by the founders’ dreams to provide a one-stop food and lifestyle experience, all under the same roof and it was inspired by the sights, scents, and vibes of other global markets that the founders sought to offer a similar experience here in Singapore.

Housed within a warm community-based environment, PasarBella encompasses a seafood market, meat, dairy, fresh produce, wines and craft beers, global cuisines and personal services.

From Parsabella 2013

Because there are more than 30 over unique stalls at PasarBella, we are only going to introduce 10 stores that you absolutely must visit when you’re there.

The UN defines ‘youth’ as persons between the ages of 15 and 24 years and having celebrated my birthday yesterday, I am officially no longer a youth. In other words, I am in my mid-20s and this is perhaps the turning point of my life where marriage, starting a family, and no more partying comes into play.
On this note, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those whom have made my birthday an awesome one.

To My Dearest Jacqueline [a.k.a Baby]:

Thank you for being the Chief Organiser for my birthday celebration. You have done so much for me that I am really thinking hard about how I can make your upcoming birthday celebration a blast! Though we both agree that Tajiyama at Vivocity would have been a much better place to dine at, I really enjoyed having dinner with you at Rocku Japanese Charcoal Grill Restaurant. The lovely birthday card that you handmade for me is so real that a lot of people thought that we were going to fly to Taiwan yesterday. I really appreciate all that you have done for me and thank you for the unconditional love and blessings that you have showered upon me.

From Melvin’s Birthday 2013

It’s my third time dining at Rocku and to be honest, the quality of the food has dropped. A normal weekday dinner buffet at Rocku cost $32.84 per person and we decided that after this dining experience, we would probably stick to Tajiyama at VivoCity [although Tajiyama is slightly expensive].

From Melvin’s Birthday 2013

Everyone really thought that I was going to fly to Taiwan last night when I posted a photo of the lookalike Scoot boarding pass birthday card on Instagram. The idea for the birthday card was cleverly thought out by Jacqueline and she’s amazingly creative in making cards and gifts. Maybe she should start a business selling handmade cards. With that said, we would probably be travelling to Taiwan next month if nothing disrupts our plan.

The Famous Amos Birthday Cookie is really tasty and sweet. However, it might be a little too sweet for certain individuals. For me, I like it a lot!

To My Encouraging Family Members & Relatives:

Thank you all for celebrating my birthday last Saturday at Beppu Menkan Japanese Noodle Restaurant. Over the last 25 years of growing-up, all of you have been my pillar of encouragement and I really appreciate all of your presence during last Saturday’s gathering. Truly, as the saying goes, “No family is perfect. We argue, we fight. We even stop talking to each other at times, but in the end, family is family, the love will always be there”.

I have dined at Beppu Menkan Japanese Noodle Restaurant a couple of times in the past and I really like their food. They used to have many outlets in Singapore but it seems that the outlet at China Court is the last surviving Beppu Menkan Japanese Noodle Restaurant.

From Melvin’s Birthday 2013

The pricing is average and the service has room for improvement. Nevertheless, if you’re into super duper spicy ramen noodles, Beppu Menkan Japanese Noodle Restaurant is the place.

To My Supportive Brother and Cheryl:

Thank you to the both of you for taking some time off to hold a separate birthday celebration for me at The Straits Wine Company last Saturday. I had a relaxed time chilling out with the both of you over a bottle of Italian Moscato D’Asti and a bottle of New Zealand Merlot Red Wine and I really enjoyed myself.

From Melvin’s Birthday 2013

—–
The Straits Wine Company is honestly my favourite place to chill out. As a matter of fact, both Jacqueline and I frequent there so often that we have bought more than 20 over bottles of wine till date. The cosy ambience is really inviting and personally, I like The Straits Wine Company because it is a really lovely place for sipping glasses of wine while chatting with friends. Furthermore, The Straits Wine Company’s wine collection is vast and the price is rather reasonable. In fact, we’re planning to engage them to supply bottles of wine for our wedding banquet unless there’s other distributors that provides the greatest value for money.

To My Awesome Cellgroup Members:

Despite not having seen you all for such a long time, it was really nice of you all to plan a surprise dinner for me at Manhattan Fish Market. I had a really fabulous time catching up with you all and I do look forward to more meet-ups and catching-ups. Thank you all for the lovely hoodie that keeps me warm at work.

I’m no stranger to Manhattan Fish Market and they have always been my favourite place to dine at. When we dined there for my birthday, they had a Fish and Chips Set Meal Promotion that cost $10++ and it includes a soup or ice-cream and a drink. The portion size is really huge and it is really value for money. Having tried a few variations of Fish and Chips in Singapore, I personally feel that Manhattan Fish Market’s Fish and Chips is the best!

From Bugis+ Food Trail 2013

To My Friends On Social Media [Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Blogosphere]:

To be honest, I am really overwhelmed by the number of birthday wishes on my Facebook Timeline and though we hardly meet/see each other, I really do appreciate all of your well-wishes. Thank you for not forgetting me!

—–
With this, I would like to end off by saying a big ‘thank you’ to all of you whom have made my birthday a really joyful one.

Meanwhile, do check out my very first song cover, “Telling the World” by Taio Cruz. This was the same song that I sang for Jacqueline when I proposed to her last year. 🙂

God bless!

Thanks to SPRG and LG, we were invited to the LG Home Appliances Media Workshop that took place at the Asian Food Channel [AFC] Studio a few weeks ago and in case you’re wondering where the AFC Studio is, it is situated at the Orchard Central and is listed as a Tourist Attraction.

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

The AFC Studio offers an eclectic mix of cooking classes that caters to diverse tastes and discerning palates and their repertoire of chefs feature a mix of homegrown talent and occasionally an AFC celebrity chef!

You will see later on in our blog entry that we really had an enjoyable time cooking up a storm but meanwhile, here’s some photographs of the AFC Studio. We must say, we really love the place a lot because of its really organised and neat layout. The environment is definitely conducive for learning and it certainly inspires culinary excellence.

This was our learning space for the evening and here’s Chef Wendy and her assistants preparing the mise-en-place for our lesson.

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

While the preparation was underway, we went to explore the AFC Studio and we found some really cool kitchen equipment and accessories that the AFC Studio was selling. There were frying pans, wine chiller bag, kitchen knifes, and even the Nespresso coffee-making machine!

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013
From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

We also saw these badges that were really cool and because of these badges, I was quite enlightened to the extent that I more or less had a hunch on how I would conduct future culinary lessons for my trainees.

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

Look, there’s even reference books from celebrity chefs that one could draw culinary inspiration from.

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

While the AFC Studio may be a place for cooking classes, it is also a place for food & beverage as well.

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

Here’s AFC Studio’s beverage menu.

And here were the pastries and cakes that the AFC Studio was selling.

Before the cooking classes began, we were served some light refreshments and they were simply so yummy that we couldn’t resist having additional servings.

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

I had the Earl Grey Tea from TWG Tea and I absolutely love it. I know I’m biased but I personally have a liking for TWG Teas because TWG Teas are really fragrant and they are simply one of the finest teas around. Truly, TWG Teas are perfect gifts for tea-lovers like me.

The second dish that we were taught to prepare was the Bibim Naengmyeon. The Bibim Naengmyeon is essentially Korean Spicy Cold Noodles and here are the ingredients that we used to prepare the dish; some lettuce leaves, cabbage, cucumber, carrot, hard boiled egg, and kimchi.

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

And these were the ingredients for the Korean Spicy Cold Noodles Sauce; gochujang, rice vinegar, soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, Korean sesame oil, and roasted sesame seeds.

So here’s Chef Wendy teaching us how to prepare the Bibim Naengmyeon.

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

Well, apart from learning how to prepare these two dishes where we had the opportunity to use the LG Door-in-Door Refrigerator [Model: GR-J237AGXV] and the LG Microwave Oven [Model: MJ3281BC], we were also introduced to some other LG Home Appliances like the LG Front-Load Washing Machine [Model: WD-1279RDS7], the LG Top-Load Washing Machine [Model: WFT1261DD], and the LG Clarus 1 Dishwasher [Model: D1454TF].

For the remainder of this blog entry, we will be giving you more details about the LG Home Appliances that we were introduced to and for simplicity sake, we will only be sharing information about the various LG Home Appliances that are specific to the model numbers that we have listed.

LG Front-Load Washing Machine [Model: WD-1279RDS7]

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

We kinda like the LG Front-Load Washing Machine that was on display at the LG Home Appliances Media Workshop. Power packed with a number of features and top of the line technology, this LG Front-Load Washing Machine is equipped with features such as the 6 Motion Inverter Direct Drive which results in one of the best washing performances and high energy efficiency that caters to varying characteristics of various fabrics.

The six motions used in the LG Front-Load Washing Machine are Scrubbing, Filtration, Rolling, Tumbling, Swing, and Stepping.

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

The six motions used in the LG Front-Load Washing Machine have been designed to dissolve detergent faster and to also minimise wrinkles and tangles while ensuring an even wash. This thus translates to an estimated 45% savings in electricity and 18% savings in water per washing cycle.

The best thing that we like about the LG Front Load Washing Machine is the TrueSteam feature which kills residing allergens and mites in the laundry with 100 Degrees Celsius steam. Not only does steam washing eliminates allergens, it also provides better penetration into the fabrics for thorough removal of dirt and stubborn stains.

The steam refresh cycle can also come in particularly handy especially for busy people because it provides wrinkle and odour removal on laundry that needs to be used in a jiffy. What’s really cool is that there’s no need for any ironing especially if you’re really rushing for time.

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

The LG Front Load Washing Machine is retailing for $3,199 and is available at Audio House, Best Denki, Harvey Norman, Courts, and Gain City.

LG Top-Load Washing Machine [Model: WFT1261DD]

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

The LG Top-Load Washing Machine comes with the 6 Motion Inverter Direct Drive but for top loading washing machines, the 6 motions are waveforce, compressing, swing, rotating, rubbing, and agitating. The only major difference between the LG Front-Loading Washing Machine and the LG Top-Loading Washing Machine is that the LG Top-Loading Washing Machine does not come with the TrueSteam feature and is not as water-saving as the LG Front-Load Washing Machine.

With that being said, the LG Top-Loading Washing Machine is tagged with a reasonable price of $1,199 and is available at Audio House, Best Denki, Harvey Norman, Courts, and Gain City. Well, if we compare between the LG Top-Loading Washing Machine and the LG Front-Loading Washing Machine, we personally feel that the LG Front-Loading Washing Machine is way better in value than the LG Top-Loading Washing Machine because it comes packed with a dryer and tons of other features that the LG Top-Loading Washing Machine may not have.

LG Clarus 1 Dishwasher [Model: D1454TF]

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

We’re not sure if having a Dishwasher at home is a good idea because it can take up quite a fair bit of space in the kitchen but if you live in a big house, having a Dishwasher can be really ideal especially if you have a large number of guests coming to dine at your place.

With a water rating of 9 litres, the LG Clarus 1 Dishwasher has one of the lowest water rating among the different Dishwashers that are available in the market and without a surety of doubt, washing dishes with a Dishwasher is definitely way cleaner and more efficient than manual hand-washing. Similarly as the LG Front-Loaded Washing Machine, the LG Calrus 1 Dishwasher comes with the TrueSteam feature that effectively remove tough stains.

In addition, the SmartRack System for the LG Clarus 1 Dishwasher offers users the convenience of stacking plates and pots without much difficulties. Hence, by washing more stuffs with just 1 single washing cycle, you can save electricity and water too!

The retail price for the LG Clarus 1 Diwshwasher is $1,799 and it is available at Harvey Norman.

LG Door-in-Door Refrigerator [Model: GR-J237AGXV]

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

The LG Door-in-Door Refrigerator is probably one of the most stylish refrigerators that we have ever come across and it fits elegantly in designer kitchens. One of the LG Door-in-Door Refrigerator is  the Door-in-Door feature that provides convenient access to the home bar within the refrigerator. So, instead of opening the main refrigerator door that allows cold air to escape, the door-in-door feature minimises the escape of  cold air by up to 50%. This hence reduces energy consumption.

As the Door-in-Door feature is twice the height of a conventional home bar, it offers a much bigger space that allows users to customise and reconfigure the shelves to easily fit large sized pots.

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

Personally, one feature that we love about the LG Door-in-Door Refrigerator is the Hygiene Fresh feature that keeps the refrigerator clean, hygienic and fresh. Its 4-Step filtering system removes dust, fungi spore, bacteria, and it eliminates 99.999% of 4 major types of bacteria in just 15 minutes.

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

Natural ingredients such as ginseng extract are used to coat the LG Hygiene Fresh and with the automated air purification system, it sucks and purifies the soiled air effectively, hence keeping the refrigerator pleasant smelling. Therefore, storing durians or strong-smelling items like medicinal herbs isn’t going to be an issue with the LG Door-in-Door Refrigerator.

The LG Door-in-Door Refrigerator is retailing for $4,999 and it is available at Audio House, Best Denki, Harvey Norman, Courts, and Gain City.

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

LG Microwave Oven [Model: MJ3281BC]

From LG Home Appliances Workshop 2013

The LG Microwave Oven comes with the latest lightwave technology and its Charcoal Lighting Heater allows cooked food to retain its natural flavours and goodness. With its fuss-free and multi-level cooking capabilities, the LG Microwave Oven is definitely handy for cooking and heating up convenience food!

The LG Microwave Oven is retailing for $599 and it is available at Audio House, Best Denki, Harvey Norman, Courts, and Gain City.

Having checked out what Savour Baking has to offer, we went to check out Savour Lifestyle. Now, this is the place where we were so tempted to get this soda-making machine that Sodastream was selling.

From Savour 2013

This soda-making machine works the same way as those used in the food and beverage restaurants and the soda that it produces is as good as the carbonated soft drinks that you buy from the provision stores. One really good thing about this soda-making machine is that it allows you to make your own flavoured soft-drinks. What’s more, it is really cheap and serving your own flavoured soft-drinks to guests visiting your house on a hot sunny afternoon would definitely leave an extremely positive impression!

To make your own flavoured soft drink, all you have to do is to manually pump carbon dioxide gas into the plain water and thereafter, add any concentrated syrup of your preference. After adding the concentrated syrup, mix the mixture well and there you go, you have created your very own carbonated soft drink that is ready to be consumed. It’s really easy!

From Savour 2013

There were two kinds of soda-making machines that Sodastream was selling and the only difference between the two is this; one does the carbonation of the drink automatically while the other requires manual handwork to carbonate the drink. So which is better? Obviously the one that requires manual handwork is better because you can control how fizzy you want your drink to be.

At Savour Lifestyle, we got to know about this local company, L’Earth Private Limited, that manufactures cutlery, plates, and storage containers that would come in handy for occasions such as house-warming party, BBQ party, and picnics. Now what’s really so special about their plastic wares are that they are totally environmentally-friendly. Their plastic wares are bio-degradable and are microwavable as well. The best part is, they can be washed again and reused all over again, thus saving money and saving the environment.

From Savour 2013

Usually, people would associate biodegradable plastic wares as being dull in colour and having a weird smell but check this out, it can be rather trendy as well.

The last booth that we checked out before heading for our respective workshops was Nespresso.

From Savour 2013

Nespresso needs no further introduction because previously, we have blogged about it here: https://awinsomelife.org/2013/03/28/nespresso-atelier-class-savour-2013-preview/

Again, we were tempted to get the Nespresso Pixie Coffee Machine because there was a $50 voucher that we could have utilised but we decided that we should ONLY get all these lifestyle gadgets once our new house is ready.

And off we went for our respective workshops.

Jacqueline went for the Garden Themed Cupcakes Workshop that was conducted by Cake Over Heels while I went for the Sparkling Wine of Italy Wine-Tasting Session that was conducted by the Italian Wine Club.

At Savour Wine, it was truly a haven for wine enthusiasts. There were all sorts of wines from many wine-producing countries and for just $12, you can savour 43 different types of wines from different winemakers! Now that’s really something to scream about.

From Savour 2013

Here I was at the Wine Theatre listening in to the the different kinds of Italian sparkling wines and we had the opportunity to taste a Prosecco, a Lambrusco, and an Asti Spumante.

Since the Wine Tasting Session ended rather early, I sneaked over to Savour Baking and spied on what Jacqueline was up to and here she was designing her very own Ladybird Cupcake after learning from the Chef at Cake Over Heels.

From Savour 2013

The Chef from Cake Over Heels taught the class how to design their own Garden Themed Cupcakes using fondant sugar and it is really amazing what you can do using fondant sugar. Usually, customised design cakes are either designed using fondant sugar or sugar icing.

Since we had a considerable amount of time before the evening classes, we went to the Gourmet Village to see what we could have for dinner.

Here are the pop-up restaurants by some of the famous Chefs:

Chef Sam Leong from Forest Restaurant in Resorts World Sentosa

Since the serving portion of food at the Gourmet Village was pricey and small, we decided to head back to Jason’s to have our fill.

And so for dinner we had……

The dinner we had was oh-so-satisfying because the food were ultra-fresh! Even as I am typing this blog entry, I am reminded of the yummy Fine de Claire Oysters that I had and I just can’t wait to indulge in them the next time I go to France.

After our really awesome dinner, we went for our second last workshop and it was conducted by the same Chef from Cake Over Heels that conducted the Garden Themed Cupcakes Workshop.

This time round, we learnt how to make a “Chanel Handbag” Cupcake and it was really a tedious affair. There were many steps involved and you got to be really patient and meticulous to every intricate details.

Though it seems quite simple to do, it really wasn’t that easy because you will need to practise this craft over and over again in order to master it. Guess I will have to find a day to just stay at home and work on mastering my culinary and baking skills.

The last highlight for the evening was the Masterchef Class that we attended at the Gourmet Auditorium.

From Savour 2013

Chef Margot Janse collaborated with Chef Claude Bosi to conduct the cooking demonstration and it was really inspiring.

Chef Margot Janse and Chef Claude Bosi really worked well together and you could tell from the light-hearted moments that they shared.

Honestly, we had a really fabulous time at Savour 2013. Considering the number of classes and workshops that we attended, Savour 2013 was really worth the money because we have learnt quite a number of skills that would take our culinary and baking skills to the next level. Truly, we love Savour 2013 and we can’t wait for Savour 2014. Till then, here’s us signing off~!
