The first ever Color Run in Singapore was held yesterday and we have just completed it. As we just got back not long ago, it would be too late for us to do up a complete post event blog entry but as we understand that there will be a second session that will be taking place later, here’s just a few tips that might just come in handy.
1. Don’t wear expensive or branded jewellery as you probably don’t want them to appear different from the first time you bought it.
2. Don’t wear a new pair of sports shoes to the event. Try to search for a pair of old sports shoes and put them on instead.
3. If you’re driving, Imbiah Carpark is closed and the only carpark available is Beach Station; so be there early as there will definitely be lots of people driving in. Carpark cost $5 for the first 4 hours and $2 per subsequent hour. Carpark rates will cost $2 per entry after 5pm.
4. Try to avoid the Red Colour Powder. It’s extremely difficult to remove and despite bathing and scrubbing for more than 4 times, it still remains.
5. New Balance will be having a booth at the event village. Do go check them out as they will be giving away a free scarf which will be handy for the run. To get the free scarf, you will have to like New Balance Singapore Facebook Page. For both the guys and gals, we highly recommend that you cover your head with a hat or the New Balance scarf because when the powder gets into your scalp, its even harder to remove.
6. When you complete the run, a bottle of mineral water or 100 Plus will be issued to you with a packet of colour powder for you to use. Use them wisely. During the run, there are 3 water points set-up at different locations so bringing a water bottle is not necessary unless you prefer to hydrate more than usual.
7. There is a photo booth for you to snap some event pictures that will be made available on CIMB Facebook Page. So, don’t miss it!
8. Try not to bring bulky DSLRs for photo-taking. Your smartphone camera should suffice.
9. After the 1KM mark, there will be lots of uphills and when you proceed to the downhill portion, exercise greater care as the floor can be quite slippery.
We hope these tips would come in handy and we will be writing a more comprehensive and detailed post event blog entry about the Color Run soon. Meanwhile, have fun and enjoy the run later on because it will definitely be a blast!
Many friends of mine commented that I have put on a lot of weight in recent years and this is rather true! Although I used to have the belief that I will never put on weight no matter how much I tend to eat, the extreme weight-gaining experience totally changed that perception of mine.
I would say, my weight was in the healthy range during my National Service [NS] days and back then, I was very proud of my physical fitness although I can never seem to jump far for my standing board jump. Due to an aggravated injury that I sustained during training, I was put Out-Of-Course [OOC] from the Officer Cadet Course [OCC] and that caused me to lead a sedentary lifestyle where I was carrying out desk-bound duties. Switching from a combat vocation to an admin support vocation saw me having very little exercise and everyday without fail, I would have a plate of Nasi Lemak for breakfast!
This was me [on the right] during my OCS days.
To be honest, I never really thought much about what I was consuming and eventually, I gained a couple of kilos. When I OOC-ed from the OCC, I was 65kg and after the switch to an admin support vocation for half a year, my weight was an astounding 70kg! A few months went by and I had to go for a surgery which made me rather immobile and by the time I was Operationally-Ready [ORD] and left NS for the workforce, I weighed 80kg! Again, I didn’t put much thought about leading a healthy lifestyle but I know that physically, I have grown wider and my thighs and arms were becoming rather flabby. My stomach was bulging and I even had to purchase new clothes for my wardrobe! My waist size was an initial 30-inches and it was 36-inches when I finished my service to the nation! That was how bad it was and coupled with the number of food-tastings I attend as a Blogger, I was in for a disaster.
This was me [on the left] on the the day I ORD. See the huge difference?
By the time I realised that my unhealthy lifestyle has to go for the sake of my health, it was a little too late and gaining weight is much easier than losing weight. I tried all sorts of ways to slim down and that includes taking slimming pills. At the initial start, there seem to be some progress but they were short-lived and finally, I decided that enough is enough and I changed the way I eat.
I started my strict diet regime at the beginning of July and every week, I consume only two meals a day. I know Nutritionists or Dieticians have better dieting plans but my current diet regime is what works best for me. In my meals, I literally cut down the amount of carbohydrates that I consume and rice, which used to be my staple food is somewhat eradicated from my meals. In my meals, I also consume more meat, vegetables, and fruits, and I cut down on the junk food that I take in as well. Whenever I feel a little hungry, I would down a cup of Milo or eat a fruit/nut bar and it eases the hunger pangs a little. By the end of July, my weight stood at 78kg and now that its mid-August, my current weight stands at 77kg. Although my ideal weight is 65kg, I am intending to let it drop to 75kg and then tone up my muscles from there. Then again, I hope that ultimately, my weight will drop to 70kg by the end of the year! On a positive note, my waist size has gone down from 36-inches to 33-inches and I can now fit into my old pants/jeans/bermudas!
Now, you probably might be wondering what has my weight loss got to do with the title of this blog entry but really, it has got everything to do with my weight loss!
I met up with Mr Tai Seng Yee, the Executive Director of Zenxin Agri-Organic Food Singapore last month and I went down to his store at Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre to see what he has to share with me about his business. Before meeting Mr Tai, I arrived early at Zenxin Agri-Organic Food and I went to check out the products that were available at his store.
I was rather impressed with the huge selections of organic products that are available at Zenxin Agri-Organic Food and I was even more amazed at the rather affordable pricing as organic products are usually more expensive.
When I met up with Mr Tai, he was very friendly and he shared with me about Zenxin Agri-Organic Food Singapore.
They have organic beverages…
They even have organic sauces and condiments too!
During the insightful sharing, Mr Tai explained to me the difference between the conventional way of farming and the organic way of farming. He also shared with me that he hopes that through Zenxin Agri-Organic Food Singapore, consumers like you and me can also be educated and be made more aware of the benefits that organic produce can bring to our lives.
Mr Tai was indeed very hospitable and generous that he gave me a bag that was full of organic groceries for me to bring home.
Most of the fresh organic produce at Mr Tai’s store are grown at their organic farm in Malaysia and during the September/December school holidays, Jacqueline and I will be making a trip down to Zenxin Organic Park [in Malaysia] to experience what the farmers do daily. Yes, we will be getting our hands dirty and we will be documenting our trip with lots of videos and photographs!
Here’s what inside my bag of organic groceries…
Fresh Organic Vegetables
Fresh Organic Fruits
Organic Black Rice & Organic Mulberry Leaf Tea
With the bag full of organic groceries, here’s what they were used for when I got home! Due to limited time, not all of the organic groceries were used but eventually, we used up the rest of them over the next few days.
We stir-fried the vegetables after washing them. Turns out crispy and crunchy!
We steamed the leek with the fish and the whole dish turned out fragrant!
We boiled the radish with some pork and the soup was extremely refreshing!
Ever since the meeting with Mr Tai, I am now more aware of the health benefits that organic products can bring to my life and now, all my snacks/tid-bits to satisfy my hunger pangs are all organic and contain very little calories! This has really helped me in my dieting plans and even as I type this blog entry, I’m snacking on an organic peanut bar that contains very little calories!
In time to come, we will be introducing a couple of organic-related blog entries where we will share with you our favourite organic products and how we use them in our cooking or daily lives.
Both Jacqueline and I have signed up for The Color Run [Singapore] 2013 that will be taking place this Saturday at Sentosa Island and we are crossing our fingers and praying for good weather so that the race can proceed smoothly. Despite the major race pack collection hiccup that took place at Scape yesterday, we are still excited about the race and we hope that there won’t be any more of such bad and last-minute planning by the organisers. Waiting 4.5 hours to collect a race pack is totally uncool and hopefully, the organisers can learn from yesterday’s episode and plan in advance. In case you’re wondering what The Color Run is all about, check out the following video:
This is the first time that The Color Run is being organised in Singapore and it is a one of a kind experience that is less about speed and more about enjoying a color crazy day with friends and family members. The Color Run caters to participants of all different speeds, ages, shapes, and sizes; and we’re pretty sure that it will be the most enjoyable 5-kilometers, un-timed race that we have ever participated.
Thousands of participants will be doused from head to toe in different colors at each kilometre and the fun continues at the finish line with a gigantic “Color Festival”, where more colored powder are used to create happiness and lasting memories, not to mention the millions of vivid color combinations.
While The Color Run event is all about fun and positive energy, the 5-kilometers run also focuses on promoting healthy living. Over 60% of Color Runners are first-time 5-kilometers runners and the event is making headway on the growing national focus of improving health and wellness.
Personally, this will be my first time running a 5-kilometers race and I’m quite sure that after this experience, I probably would take part in a few more races to keep myself fit and healthy. The Color Run will be my stepping stone to many runs and speaking of which, I probably should get myself a new pair of running shoes as my old runs are rather worn out.
5 days ago, we were at The Spa Artisan that is located at the luxurious 5-stars Fullerton Hotel Singapore for the Powerslim Impact Treatment and I had a really good time experiencing the world’s most comfortable slimming experience. Now who says guys don’t go for slimming treatments?! On The Way To The Spa Artisan @ The Fullerton Hotel Singapore
The Spa Artisan is located at the Mezzanine Level of the Fullerton Hotel Singapore and to get there, you would have to approach the Front Desk for access as it is only open to hotel guests.
Before I began the Powerslim Impact Treatment, a health questionnaire was handed to me to fill up and this is a routine procedure/common practice as with all slimming centres but The Spa Artisan is more than just a place for slimming! There are massage, nail, and facial services too!
Apart from having my height and weight measurements taken, I also went for a complete Body Composition Analysis.
This is the Body Composition Analyser which measures Weight, Lean Body and Body Fat Mass, Intracellular and Extracellular Water, Current Total Body Water, Dry Lean Mass, Body Mass Index [BMI], Percent Body Fat, 0ECW/TBW, Segmental Lean Mass -Right Arm, Left Arm, Trunk, Right Leg, Left Leg and Fat Control, LBM Control, Basal Metabolic Rate.
The accuracy of the Body Composition Analyser is about 98.5% and it will take about 30 minutes. The usual price for a Body Composition Analysis like this would cost $20+ but currently, we are partnering with The Spa Artisan for a promotion where you can get a FREE Body Composition Analysis Composition Report! All you have to do is call 6423-1382 and quote [A Winsome Life] to book your personal Free Body Composition Analysis Composition Report which includes body fat percentage, metabolic rate analysis and more.
Following the Body Composition Analysis, we were shown around The Spa Artisan and we were mightily impressed with the facilities that are available to make the whole spa experience a rather pleasant and comfortable one.
This is the Pedi Field where Manicure and Pedicure Services are carried out.
The Retail Shop at The Spa Artisan where guests can purchase premium skin and facial products.
The Lounge Area at The Spa Artisan where guests can relax comfortably before and after their treatments.
And off I went for my Powerslim Impact Treatment at The Spa Artisan.
The Powerslim Impact Treatment that I underwent includes the following:
• Relaxing Foot Soak
• Velvet Skin Prep on targeted area
• Stimulating IMPACT Therapy to obtain visible results
• Be surrounded by patented infrared and ionization technology to maximise comfort and effectiveness
How Was The Powerslim Impact Treatment Experience?
This picture probably just tells it all.
I have to admit, this is one of the most comfortable slimming treatment that I underwent and with the professional and friendly therapist [Atiqah] whom attended to me, it was overall an enjoyable session. The Powerslim Impact Treatment felt as if I was going for a sun-tanning session at the beach but really, what the Infrared Radiation does is that it intensifies the metabolism and the process of burning calories, thus reducing the effect of cellulite and improving the skin’s appearance. In addition, the infrared stimulates collagen production, the main component responsible for beautiful and firm skin. Better still, the infrared heat used in the Powerslim Impact Treatment is exactly the same as the heat from the sun but without the damaging effects of the sun rays!
I was told that 55 minutes of the Powerslim Impact Treatment is equivalent to 5 hours in the Gym! While I’m not sure how true this claim is, what I do notice about myself is how healthy and rejuvenated I felt after the whole treatment!
Now, we have some piece of good news for all you readers so if you’re interested, do read on!

How The PowerSlim IMPACT Treatment Works
Adhesive electrode pads are placed over specific areas of the body to deliver electrical impulses that stimulate the nerves and cause the muscles to contract. The stimulation of the muscle by the electrical current creates a significant energy demand on the muscles and hence, surrounding fat cells are burned for energy. The stimulation also agitates the fat cells causing the release of toxins and the reduction of cellulite. In addition, the deep muscle stimulation helps to tighten and tone the skin, and improve circulation. In case you’re wondering, the treatment is safe and non-invasive.
You can now be the first in Asia to experience the PowerSlim IMPACT treatment at The Spa Artisan @ The Fullerton Hotel for just $98 nett! This price is only applicable for the first trial and in case you’re wondering, the usual price is actually $298+!

While most people are either out partying, spending time with family members, or chilling out with friends, we were at Pearl’s Hill City Park with a crowd of about a 1,000 people training our calves and feeding the mosquitoes. This might seem like an absurd idea but really, we were there to catch the Red Bull Dark Knights 2013 that was organised by the European Red Bull.
The Red Bull Dark Knights is Singapore’s only night-time mountain bike downhill race and ever since its debut in 2011, the Red Bull Dark Knights has gained much popularity and its comeback this year at Pearl’s Hill City Park has attracted quite a number of riders from all over the world.
I have to say this, although I have been living in Singapore for the past 25 years, I have never been to Pearl’s Hill City Park and it was my virgin trip there. A look at the National Parks Website reveals that there is a restricted reservoir on top of the hill and if you’re clueless about where Pearl’s Hill City Park is, it is tucked away in the corner of Chinatown. It’s location is rather accessible as there are a couple of buses that serves the area and the nearest MRT Station is Outram Park Station, NOT Chinatown Station [unless you don’t mind walking a longer route].
Visitors were also entertained with a special screening of Red Bull Media House’s feature film, “Where the Trail Ends”. The 81 minutes long movie showcased the world’s top freeride mountain bikers search and ride unraveled terrain around the globe, making their expedition the most progressive and ambitious mountain biking ever attempted.
The DJ for the evening was electrifying. The music that he played were heart-pumping and groovy.
When we checked out the profiles of the riders whom were competing in the competition, we were quite surprised to find out that a majority of the competitors were Singaporeans.
Honestly, capturing photographs of the riders were extremely difficult as there was insufficient lighting and the riders were moving really fast. Although we were cleared to use flash photography, we decided against it as we do not want to affect the performance of the riders. Thankfully, we managed to get some good shots as we had access to the restricted zone.
Keeping in the theme of knights and castles, the obstacles were interestingly named arrowhead, slingshot, and the dragon’s back, and each of the obstacles tested the tenacity of all the riders whom participated in the competition. In fact, we witnessed quite a number of riders falling off their bikes but their sheer determination and perseverance pushed them beyond their physical limits to complete the entire course. For that, we salute all the bikers whom took part in the race.
The ballista obstacle is definitely a tough one because riders must have a solid control of their bike in order to prevent themselves from veering off-course.
The champion for the Red Bull Dark Knights 2013 is none other than 37-year-old Daniel Sprague from Australia. Daniel has been competing in off-road cycling events for 31 years and he has won 2 World Amateur BMX Championships, 7 Australian Championships, and 29 Western Australian Championships across both gravity MTB and BMX. He was also the champion for Red Bull Dark Knights 2011.
Although we didn’t have quite a lot of good shots, we did managed to video down portions of the event and if you’re interested, you can check out the following video.
Truly, the Red Bull Dark Knights 2013 was an eye-opener and the Singaporeans didn’t fare that badly because most of them are in the top 10 positions. In fact, we were quite impressed by a 16-year-old Singaporean rider, Shadiq Putra, whom gotten 7th placing for the race.
Well, although we pretty much fed the thirsty mosquitoes, the action that we caught at Red Bull Dark Knights was definitely way more exciting than watching the Formula 1 Race and we hope that this blog entry will create a greater awareness of the local mountain biking scene. Cheerios~!
Well, this time round, we have an interesting piece of news for all of you and that is, the European Red Bull is bringing back the exhilaration of Singapore’s ONLY night-time cross-country and downhill mountain bike race on the 18th of May 2013 with the Red Bull Dark Knights.
Check out a video of the Red Bull Dark Knights to know what the event is really all about! [Credits to Red Bull Content Pool for the Video]
This is not just any ordinary mountain bike race and mountain bikers in Singapore will soon hit pay dirt with Red Bull Dark Knights staging a comeback on the 18th May 2013. Promising to intensify the complexity of the race, the course is one that is part urban and part trail and it will take even the most experienced of riders about a minute to complete.
Participants will be flagged off at the summit of Pearl’s Hill City Park, right next to a restricted reservoir and they will ride a course that features many obstacles from wall rides, stairs, big jumps, rock gardens and even a jump at the finish line from a height of over 10 feet.
The Red Bull Dark Knights will be held at Pearl’s Hill City Park [Credits to Ariffin for the Image]
The main event occurs after night fall, adding an element of difficulty as competitors will navigate their way to
the finish, being guided only by their helmet light and obstacles which are dimly lit.
This year, the European Red Bull will invite up to 40 elite local and international riders at the event and expects that the open category will feature no less than 100 riders who apply to compete.
If you’re intending to join the mountain bike race, here’s what you need to know about the race format:
The qualification run for the 100 Open Category riders will begin as early as 4.30pm where only the top 20
fastest times will qualify. These 20 riders from the open category will then join the 40 elite riders after a series
of seeding runs to compete in the top 60 shootout.
The shootout is a process of elimination, where after 3 single runs, the top 30 riders with the fastest times will
progress into the next round. This shootout process repeats itself until the top 10 are selected. The top 10 riders
will then compete in the final race at 9.30pm to determine the top 3 riders of the event.
To get your adrenaline pumping, applications for the Red Bull Dark Knights is now open on www.redbull.sg/darkknights and registration will close on 25th April 2013.
Even if you’re not intending to join the mountain bike race, the Red Bull Dark Knights is open to members of the public with NO ADMISSION FEE and you can get right up to the action with prime viewing spots. Personally, we feel that the event is also a good training ground for photography enthusiasts seeking to hone their skills in sports/action photography under low light conditions.
