Melvin’s 24h Birthday Speech 2012
Hello Everyone,

I celebrated my 24th birthday 2 days ago and truly, I felt that this year seems to go by faster than the past year. I guess that is most probably because I am counting down till the day I ORD from NS! Well, this year’s birthday celebration was an awesome one and truly, I feel really blessed and thankful for the amazing showers of blessings that kept pouring in.

Firstly, I want to thank God for seeing me through the tough and difficult time in the past year. To be honest, there were many times I felt that I’ve let God down but truly, God always keeps His promises as mentioned in Hebrews 13:5 that “For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” This assurance from God tells me that no matter what difficult circumstances I am going through, God will always be there rooting for me. Also, I have witnessed firsthand the wonder-working miracles of God in my family and I really believe with all my heart that a mighty breakthrough is coming. God is good all the time and all the time, God is good!

Secondly, I want to thank my Baby, family members, and relatives for giving me such an awesome birthday celebration this year. In fact, just last Saturday, the whole family celebrated my birthday, my mum’s birthday, my uncle’s birthday, and my aunt’s birthday at an Italian restaurant situated at the Singapore Botanical Gardens. Well, the atmosphere at Casa Verde [the name of the Italian restaurant] was scenic and pleasant but because we dined at the alfresco area, it was pretty hot.

Well, we were seated at an area where we can literally see what the chefs were up to in the food preparation area.

And so… here were all the sumptuous Italian fare that we ordered and lo and behold, the food portion were quite large!

Cut Cake Time! This Mocha Ice-Cream Cake was bought by Baby from Swensens and it tasted heavenly! The only setback was the thick cocoa powder which made everyone coughed upon consumption.

Overall, the dining experience at Casa Verde was not too bad. The food was so-so but we felt that the service staff could have improved more on their level of service. Nonetheless, we had an enjoyable time learning how to make Italian Pizzas from the Chefs in the kitchen.

Thirdly, I want to thank my amazing Cellgroup Members whom celebrated my birthday with me last Friday night, right after cellgroup meeting. In total, there were 14 of us and it was definitely an unforgettable experience. Ming Wei [my cellgroup friend] suggested to go prawning at Bishan and Baby and I were quite eager to go as we haven’t been prawning for quite a long while already. When we arrived at the Bishan prawning area at around half past midnight, the place was packed with people and we decided to head down to Punggol prawning area instead. For those whom prawns quite frequently, you might be aware that there are 3 prawning areas in Punggol [one near Popeye’s, one near the Golf Course, and one near the Country Club]. As the prawning area at Popeye’s was extremely packed, we went down to the prawning area near the Golf Course instead.

Well, barely half an hour into prawning, the rain started to pour so heavily that we were inevitably caught in the middle of a storm. Moreover, the shelters at the prawning area were leaking with rainwater and the whole scene looked as if we were filming for some “end of the world” movie. While it was raining, we guys were still unrelenting and we cast our rods into the water in hope of catching some prawns. But well, heaven wasn’t on our side and we decided to claim back our remaining hours and visit the next time.

Though it was freezing cold with the wind constantly blowing at us, it just didn’t dampen our spirits.

Baby and I were fooling around with the camera.

Hence, we decided to head down to Ang Mo Kio Park MacDonald to grab some supper/breakfast. While I was talking to Ming Wei, out of nowhere, I was given a surprise birthday celebration.

And well, I’m tremendously blessed with the gifts that the cellgroup gotten for me.

And a Tumbler which I definitely will put to good use because my old one was beyond hope.

I really am thankful to the many cellgroup members whom were with me all the way till 4.30am in the morning just to celebrate my birthday with me. I really feel loved and really, it is not about the presents and gifts I receive during my birthday but rather, what I cherish the most is the time that we can spend together as a tightly-knitted group of friends. This quality time is indeed priceless.

Well, after attending the Church service on Sunday at Riverlife Church, I felt a prompting to change and upgrade my guitar to a higher range. And so, with Baby, we visited the Swee Lee showroom at Bras Basah to try out some of their guitars and while the price seemed quite a great catch, I decided against it.

This Epiphone was selling at a 60% discount and its initial price was like $1600+! But well, the quality wasn’t that fantastic as I noticed some chips here and there.

A little sidetrack here, currently, I am using a Yamaha CPX 700 and I have plans to change to a PRS SE Angelus guitar that sells for about $880. So, I am officially putting up my Yamaha CPX 700 (Natural Colour) for sale. If you know of anyone whom is interested to own a Yamaha CPX 700, please feel free to drop me an email at melvin.ocs@gmail.com The condition of my Yamaha CPX 700 is 9.5/10! You got to see it for yourself in order to believe my words. By the way, I am selling my Yamaha CPX 700 for $600 and its retail price is $835.

Ok, so back to my birthday. As I was given “birthday off” by my superior, I spent the entire day going out with my mum. Never did I know, Baby surprised me when she called me to say that she was outside my house and gave me a beary cute box.

From Melvin’s Actual Birthday 2012

So.. I peeked into the box and

Well, that’s not all. Inside the beary cute box were a box of chocolate truffles cake, a Canon Powershot S100 Camera + leather casing, and BMM!

Alright, for those of you whom frequents our blog. Most of the photos we put up were taken using the iPhone 4 camera. While we really enjoyed taking photos with the iPhone 4 camera, there were times that we weren’t able to capture clear images because of lighting and exposure. As Baby felt that our blog can do with better photos, she decided to get me a Canon Powershot S100 Camera and we both can use it together as well.

After the surprise, I was physically drained out and went on to take a nap. And unknowingly, Baby stealthily took a picture of me sleeping on Greygrey [well, she insisted on putting this photo up on Facebook so to satisfy her cheekiness, I self-volunteer to put this up on our blog instead].

To end off the day, my parents bought us out for dinner at Watami Japanese Casual Restaurant, Bishan junction 8.

Overall, we found the food quality to be excellent. However, the portion/serving size was quite small and the price were quite steep for such a small serving size. Service definitely needs some improvement. And so, that’s how my birthday went over the past week.

Last but not the least, I also want to take this opportunity to thank all those whom wished me “Happy Birthday” over Facebook. There were more than 130 people [not that I was so free to count but Facebook did the job for me] whom posted on my Facebook Timeline so it’s really tough for me to list down each and every single name here but I believe you guys and gals know who you are. Thank you all for your well-wishes and blessings. In fact, I am really glad that I wasn’t forgotten. Whether you’re my childhood friend, former school mates, former CCA mates, former colleagues, relatives from Malaysia and England, NS mates, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Well, now that I have grown a year older, the way I think, say, and do will not be the same as what I have thought, said, and done in the past. While celebrating birthdays is a yearly affair for me, I daresay that birthdays are not just about receiving presents and blessings. But rather, birthdays are special events that brings people closer together to celebrate not just the coming of age of an individual but rather also, to acknowledge the presence and existence of the individual. Personally, after ORD, there are many opportunities waiting for me. Hence, my prayer for this year is that the LORD will direct my path and lead me to the purpose that He has called me for. Also, I am truly blessed to have Baby by my side. If not for all her sacrifices and love, this birthday celebration wouldn’t have been a complete one.

Stay tuned for more updates from us!

God bless!

So well, it was time for me to pick my pair of Crocs. Remember I said I liked this design the best?

From Crocs Fashion Show 2012 @ Vivocity

Well, it is still one of the designs I like the best because I could literally wear it anywhere; be it to work or even just out for shopping! But… no, I didn’t chose this pair because dEaRdEaR would look like a shawty beside me. [I’m so considerate and thoughtful hors! Lol!]

This pair of Crocs footwear caught my eyes too and I was trying them out to see if it suits me.

Ok, I chose this pair of newly arrived Crocs because it literally is compatible with all of the clothings I have. I could wear this 24/7 to wherever I want to go and well, the design is quite stylish and contemporary. Not only that, the heels isn’t very high so not only will dEaRdEaR  look taller than me but I could run in this pair of Crocs and catch the bus without the need to worry about falling down! If anyone were to ask me where I gotten my footwear from; I would proudly tell them that I gotten them from the Crocs Store! [hmms… or maybe I shouldn’t reveal the secret! =X]

Hello Everyone,
thanks to OMY.SG and Crocs, I was invited to attend the Crocs Fashion Show that was held last Saturday at VivoCity. Prior to the fashion show, dEaRdEaR and I took a peek at the Crocs Store at VivoCity and I must say, I was quite impressed with the range of newly-designed Crocs footwear. Well, I have to admit that in the past, I wasn’t very fond of Crocs because somehow, its classic footwear just didn’t appealed to me. Now, after seeing Crocs’ newly-designed footwear, I must say that I was very tempted to buy a couple of them.

Hello Everyone,
Baby and I were at the Wine Classics Wine Fair last Saturday and it was organised by Carrefour at Plaza Singapura. Well, the reason why we were there was because we wanted to buy some bottles of wine and Champagne to keep for upcoming birthday celebrations that would be taking place in a few months time. So, we basically took a walk around the displays and see what were on offer.

From Wine Classics Wine Fair 2012
From Wine Classics Wine Fair 2012

Being a trained wine sommelier and bartender and having worked in hotels and restaurants, I naturally asked the promoters about the products that they were selling and well, I must admit, I was quite disappointed with some of the answers that they gave me.

Some of the questions I asked the promoters were:

Is the wine that you are selling a New World Wine or an Old World Wine?
What is the taste and smell of the wine to you?
Do you have any French white wines?

And well, the answers to the above questions were as such:

1). Does it matter?/They both are the same./Is there even such a thing?/I don’t know./What is new world wine and what is old world wine?
2). “Standard answers that are read out straight from the bottle labels”.
3). French do not produce much white wines, so we don’t have it here./French Reds are more popular than French Whites so we only sell French Reds.

As Baby and I were also looking for sweet Champagne, we actually asked a promoter if there were any sweet Champagnes available and she directed us to a Champagne which is either Brut or Extra Brut! By the way, Brut means that the amount of residual sugar per litre of Champagne is 1.5% and so, a Brut Champagne is also otherwise known as a Dry Champagne. For sweet Champagnes, it ought to be either Demi-Sec or Doux and not Brut! Also, the promoters were really more interested in selling wines that would give them the highest commission rather than based on what customers really need/want.

Brut Champagne is not Sweet Champagne!

From Wine Classics Wine Fair 2012

So much for the negative points but well, here’s some plus points though. We actually came across a promoter whom was selling pre-packaged cocktail shots and we found it quite interesting. For a shot, it cost around $6++ and it is cheaper than the local clubs/bars! In fact, these shots are very suitable for a cocktail birthday party. While the shots can be drank neat [straight out from the shot glass, we prefer that it be built manually and served on the rocks for that classic premium feel and taste] For more information about these shots, you can visit http://www.shots.asia/index.php

Overall, it was quite a disappointing wine fair as the promoters didn’t know their products well enough to sell/promote them. In fact, for a wine fair like this, they ought to get promoters whom are knowledgeable and trained in wines and spirits so as to effectively up-sell/cross-sell the products that they are promoting, and also at the same time, engage and educate the customers about their products. Oh, and did I mention? You could get wine samples and go around tasting free wines without actually buying. [that’s a plus point though!]

Some of the wines that were on promotion!

Well, I sure do hope that future wine fairs would provide an ever better customer experience the next time round.

Hello Everyone,
its two more days to the New Year and I am extremely excited about the coming year as it will be rather happening and eventful for me.

Some Things That I Look Forward to in the Year 2012
1). 1 Year Anniversary with Baby
2). Turning 24
3). Completion of My Degree Programme
4). ORD
5). Embarking On My New Career
6). Surprise Surprise

When I think about 2012, I thank God for the many tomorrows. But more than just thanking God for the tomorrows, I thank God for the many yesterdays as well.

Some Memorable Things To Remember in 2011
1). My First Overseas Trip with Aldaias
2). My First Date with Baby
3). My Posting to OCS Hotel Wing After BMT
4). The Personal Lessons I’ve Learnt While in Hotel Wing
5). Completing 1000 Sit-Ups and Earning the Hotel Wing Emblem
6). Put Out-Of-Course After The Start of Pro-Term Due to Injury
7). My First Prawning Experience
8). My First Birthday Celebration with Baby
9). My Many Dining Experiences @ Tons of Restaurants with Baby
9). My First Overseas Trip with Baby
10). My First Surgery

God has indeed been faithful to me and I thank Him that although its been a tough 2011 for me, I have managed to overcome the many challenges and obstacles that came across my path. Thank God for the favour of men because I am indeed blessed to be where I am now and to be whom I’m meant to be. I thank God for my parents whom have always been supportive of all that I do. I thank God for Baby because she has taught me to love wholeheartedly and to give unconditionally. There are just so many endless things that I want to thank God for that it would take me ages to type this whole blog entry.

Well, I may not know how you [yes, you, the person reading this blog entry] are feeling right now. I may not know the troubles and challenges that you might be encountering or facing right now. But take heart that these trials are just temporary and are meant to shape your character and destiny. We all have a choice in life to be successful. We either choose to succeed or we choose to fail. But I pray that you will have the wisdom to make the right decision to choose to succeed in life! When life isn’t a bed of roses, remember Who wore the thorns. Jesus suffered for us so that we would never have too much to bear.

I like this quote by Helen Keller, “Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” and I pray that you too will be inspired.

Before I end off this last entry for the year, many of you must be wondering what presents I have received from Baby and what presents have I gotten for Baby during Christmas.

Well, I received tons of presents from Baby

A Hand-Made Card which she really spent lots of efforts on

From Christmas 2011
From Christmas 2011

Furry Blanket so that I can sleep with warmth

From Christmas 2011

Memory Foam Pillow so that I can sleep sweetly

From Christmas 2011

Tumbling Monkey Game Set to remind me of my monkey face and hairy arms

From Christmas 2011

In fact, Baby gotten more presents for me than I gotten for her. So, I’m extremely grateful and thankful for her thoughtful gifts and yes, I am indeed blessed and loved!

Well, as for the present which I gave to Baby, I specially created a photo album of the times we spent together in 2011. Its really nothing compared to the many presents that she have given to me. What you’re seeing is just a snapshot of the album. I got the whole album printed by Fotohub and the results were just fabulous. The quality is somewhat similar to those of wedding albums!

From Christmas 2011

But more than just receiving gifts after gifts, the best gift that I have received this year is Baby herself. I know your hairs must be standing on its ends right now, but truly, the best gift to give and receive is love, not luxurious material goods. So make this a priority for the year 2012, to choose to love the people closest to you.

Happy Holidays Everyone~!

Hello Everyone,
here is the much anticipated entry about what we did for Christmas and the places we visited.

24th December Christmas Eve:

Well, Baby and I both met up around 1000hours and we headed to Suntec City for breakfast! So our first breakfast for the day was the hearty MacDonald’s Breakfast Meal. And so after which, we went up to the Toys R Us Store to shop for Serene’s Baby Shower Gift [the reason why we specially went to Suntec City]. We got the 2-in-1 Baby Walker which cost about $49.95 and then went back down to buy Royce Chocolate for Ruby’s Christmas present.

From Christmas 2011
From Christmas 2011

So having gotten all the presents, we headed to Klapsons Boutique Hotel where we stayed for a night. We initially thought of Studio M but having seen some really positive reviews about Klapsons, we decided to give it a try. By the way, Klapsons was Baby’s suggestion and we were glad we chose Klapsons over Studio M. You will see why in the following photographs:

This is the Lobby Area and the designs are really contemporary, modern, and chic

And this is their Front Desk Counter which is shaped like a globe and yes, its real water that you see below the structure

And for us, we gotten the Executive Room. This is a picture of the washroom

The room comes with a flat screen TV, complimentary local calls, and even has a stationery set! Oh, and yes, there’s complimentary internet wifi connection as well!

Alright, this is quite impressive and a stunner. This card holder holds our room keys and even has a personalised welcome message upon our arrival.

As you can see, Klapsons is a rather nice boutique hotel with lots of amenities and the service rendered is similar to that offered at Fullerton Hotel Singapore [I’m comparing with Fullerton because I used to work there]. By the way, Klapsons have 17 rooms and they are all designed differently from one another, like the New Majestic Hotel in Chinatown. The target customer of Klapsons is mainly corporate guests so room rates are actually cheaper during the weekends than during the weekdays. And yes, I cannot emphasize this enough, the service is very personalised and is similar to that of 5 stars hotels. In fact, many of the amenities that are available at Klapsons are only available in suites of 5 stars hotels which cost a few thousands for a night’s stay. So, do check out what Klapsons have to offer and do book early as they are always fully booked!

So, I planned the rest of the programme for the night of Christmas Eve, and for our dinner, we dined at Pizza Hut at Serangoon NeX Shopping Mall. Thanks to my brother, Alvin, whom sponsored us complimentary vouchers to dine there.

Yes, we had all of the above at Pizza Hut for free. Thanks to my really sweet brother!

And following which, as the surprise that I had planned for Baby could only take place at 2140 hours and it was only 1930hours after we had our dinner, I had to delay some time and we literally combed through the whole of NeX Shopping Mall. Thankfully, this took up quite a lot of time.

We went to the Pet Lover’s Centre to look at Pets!

When it was about time, I revealed my surprise for Baby and yes, I treated her to the Mission Impossible Movie at the Shaw Premiere Cinema, which is equivalent to GV’s Gold Class Cinema.

Baby filling up the lucky draw coupons. Really pray hard that we will be able to win the grand prize of a Macbook Air! =P

Yes, you saw it right, we had a mini countdown party in the cinema theatre and were each served a glass of complimentary champagne.

While I must say that the service provided by the Premiere team were outstanding, I can’t say the same for the ticketing team. In fact, we were utterly disappointed with them and have emailed our feedback regarding this issue. Hopefully, we will be able to hear from them soon.

So after our movie, we headed to Ang Mo Kio Police Station to give Alvin a Christmas surprise! Baby and I were standing outside the Police Station wondering how best to surprise Alvin but in the end, because we looked really suspicious, our surprise gave way but nonetheless, we were glad to have cheered Alvin up, especially when he is on duty on Christmas eve just to protect our city. Hence, that’s what we did for Christmas Eve and there will probably be two more entries along the way so stay tuned~!

Hello Everyone,
I believe Christmas this year must have been an exciting time for all of us. For the both of us personally, we pretty much enjoyed ourselves over the last few days as it was the first time that we spent Christmas together. Well, in this blog entry and the next few entries, we are going to share with you what we did for Christmas and the various gifts we bought for one another, and you might perhaps be able to use some of these ideas in future for birthdays, Valentine’s day, or any other special occasion.

Before we begin this entry, we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Jason for winning the GV Christmas Gift Card worth $35.

So, prior to Christmas, Baby and I were planning what to give to each other. And so, my very first present for Christmas from Baby was a NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® Piccolo™. Well, being coffee lovers ourselves, Baby decided that this present was ideal as we could both share and use it. Excited about using this coffee-making machine, we set it up and tried playing around with the machine.

As a professional Barista, I must say that this coffee-making machine is definitely ideal for home and travel use as it is compact and extremely portable. The professional 15-bar pressure system which is present in the machine [and is similar to the coffee-making machines of Starbucks or Coffee Bean], is the main key to the perfect cup of coffee. However, this machine alone will not make you the same standard of coffee beverage that is served at Starbucks. Coffee-making is an art and it requires skillful combination of milk and coffee to make that perfect cup of coffee.

If you’re just an average coffee drinker whom often goes to Starbucks and not a serious coffee connoisseur, then you might just want to consider getting this machine as it comes with 4 complimentary boxes [of different coffee flavour/type] for you to make different types of coffee, all of that which cost $199 at major retailers. Not only that, it is easy to maintain and clean, and it comes with warranty as well. This will save you huge amounts of money from frequenting Starbucks. If you’re thinking of what to get as a gift for your loved ones, this might just be a perfect gift!

In our next few entries, we would be sharing with you more about our Christmas experience at Klapsons Boutique Hotel, Shaw Premiere Cinema, and the various gifts that we got for one another, so stay tuned!
