Both Jacqueline and I participated in the Hello Kitty Run Singapore yesterday and being a massive one-of-its-kind running event in Singapore, it saw 17,000 race participants decked out in a sea of red and white! Organised by Pink Apple Events, the Hello Kitty Run Singapore met with a couple of hiccups that sent away some pretty disappointed adults and children who did not manage to collect their race medals after the run.

Our Personal Opinion/Review About The Hello Kitty Run Singapore

Hello Kitty is the world’s most famous feline character and people all over the world are organising celebrations for Hello Kitty’s 40th birthday this year. Here in Singapore, the Hello Kitty Run Singapore was organised to celebrate Hello Kitty’s 40th birthday and because Hello Kitty is ever so popular, we have witnessed both the good and the ugly side of the Hello Kitty community.

So what’s this ugly side that we are talking about?

Well, this ugly side of people who are greedy and eager to make money and profit from everything and anything that has got to do with Hello Kitty! From the Hello Kitty Wishing Bone saga that we have personally witnessed at McDonald’s outlets in Singapore to physical fights between mature adults for Hello Kitty plush toys, these incidents were uncalled for and it tarnishes the reputation of the Hello Kitty community.

All over the Internet, we saw people putting the Finisher Medals for the Hello Kitty Run Singapore up for sale and the current black market rate is SGD$60 per medal. This is extremely ridiculous; considering the fact that some of these medals that are up for sale are stolen goods and some race participants took the opportunity to take advantage of the bad weather conditions to queue and re-queue for more medals. Furthermore, there was no control at the collection point and the organiser lacked foresight in this aspect.

Having participated in a couple of running events ourselves, once a finisher medal is issued out to a race participant upon completion of the run, the person issuing the finishing medal will make an indication or marking on the race participant’s race bib. Apparently, this was not done at the Hello Kitty Run Singapore, resulting in a chaotic situation that allowed greedy people to take advantage of this chaos and horde extra race medals that were meant for other race participants.

Totally ugly scene.

However, it is good news that Pink Apple Events will be issuing out medals to race participants whom have not collected their medals during the run. This would definitely increase the supply of the Hello Kitty race medal and thus, make the stolen race medal worthless for people to sell and profit from it. After all, the Hello Kitty race medal is just a collectible for all true blue Hello Kitty fans.

So, if you are a race participant and have yet to collect your race medal, don’t be in a hurry to buy it off the black market when it is supposed to be given to you for free. Just drop an email to info@hellokittyrun.com.sg and wait patiently. We believe all good things are worth waiting for.

Having said so much about the medals, we felt that the run could have been more organised. The wet weather contingency plan was inadequate for 17,000 race participants and although the Hello Kitty Run Singapore was meant to be a fun run, there should be an exclusive lane for families with young children in strollers. The race flag-off at Sentosa Gateway also proved to be a disaster for drivers as the re-routing caused massive traffic jams. Nearing the finishing line, we saw an ambulance trapped in a sea of race participants and despite it being a 5KM run, it was 3.48KM to be exact.

Although there were many negative points about the Hello Kitty Run Singapore, the only plus point that we could think about is, at certain checkpoints during the run, there were beautiful balloon sculptures, creative signages, and enthusiastic cheerleaders that spurred runners to complete the run. The Hello Kitty Beach Party after the race was also filled with a flurry of activities and there were ample opportunities for selfies and photography opportunities.

Should the Hello Kitty Run be organised in Singapore again?

Well, we say “Yes” as it allows the Hello Kitty community in Singapore to gather together and just enjoy a day out with one another. If the improvements and suggestions given by the race participants are taken into consideration, we are pretty confident that Pink Apple Events would do an even better job of organising this themed race in future because so far, they have done a pretty good job organising other races like the Energizer Night Trail Race.

We were very privileged to have been extended an invitation by Clover Films Singapore to attend the movie premiere of Kungfu Jungle and here’s our take on the movie that is directed by Teddy Chan, starring Donnie Yen, Wang Baoqiang, and Charlie Yeung.

Our Personal Review/Opinion of Kungfu Jungle

With a running duration of 100 minutes, Kungfu Jungle is a fast-paced action movie that promises lots of bone cracking and nerve wrecking martial arts moves that will send chills up your spine. There were many intense moments during the fight scenes and in all honesty, we were quite surprised to learn that the movie was given a PG-13 rating as we felt that the movie is a tad too violent.

The storyline is average and we felt that it could have been more creative. The ending of the movie did not disappoint us at all and we were glad that there was a proper closure instead of abrupt endings that leave people hanging.

If you are into kungfu action films with real kungfu chops and kicks, this is definitely the best movie for you! For more information, do like Clover Films Singapore Facebook Page!

Fans of Donnie Yen will be delighted to know that Kungfu Jungle will be showing island wide in Singapore today, 30 October 2014 at Golden Village, Cathay Cineplex, Shaw Theaters and Filmgarde. If you want to give yourself a good treat, do book your tickets early to avoid disappointment!

Movie Synopsis of Kungfu Jungle

A martial arts instructor [Donnie Yen] working at a police academy gets imprisoned after killing a man by accident. But when a vicious killer [Wang Baoqiang] starts targeting martial arts masters, the instructor offers to help the police in return for his freedom.

We were recently invited to a game of Wongamania with other bloggers and through the interactive card game, all of us had a very engaging and fulfilling time learning about asset management under different economic market cycles. Designed by independent games studio, Capital Gains LLP, Wongamania contains 143 cards with 53 uniquely designed artwork and interactive content that makes learning about economics, assets, taxes, and interest rates, fun and interesting. The card game can accommodate 2 to 6 players.

What We Think About Wongamania?

In all honesty, we are so glad that this game was created because it allowed us to learn how the different economic market cycles can hinder our ability to accumulate assets and understand what kind of assets would allow us to have an advantage over others in a given economic market cycle.

The 3 basic types of assets that are used in in Wongamania are stocks, properties, and bonds; and in Wongamania, players would be able to learn about these assets and how they can leverage on them to accumulate wealth! What is true for Wongamania is also true in real life application because the financial-savvy Singaporean would probably invest in these 3 assets to accumulate wealth for retirement! However, despite investing in these 3 assets, many people do not really understand how the economic market cycle can affect their investments and hence, often do not see the returns that they expected.

A game of Wongamania can take between 30 to 60 minutes; depending on how players intend to outwit and outthink one another so as to survive the trials and tribulations that the financial markets throw at them. The following picture shows three opportunity cards that players can utilise to sabotage other players.

The learning curve of the game might be slightly steep for new players but with more practise and getting used to, Wongamania is indeed a very challenging but fun card game. We definitely recommend this game to all teenagers and adults who would like to learn about the principles of economics and investments.

If you are a big fan of the Rich Dad Cashflow Classic Game, we are quite sure you would love and enjoy Wongamania! In fact, it is even more fun than the Monopoly Deal Card Game!

To purchase the Wongamania Card Game at an exclusive price of SGD$30, you can check out the Wongamania Crowdtivate Event but do hurry as the closing date is on 14 November 2014. Should you miss out on the Wongamania Crowdtivate Event, do like Capital Gains Group Facebook Page for more updates so that you can be kept informed about the official release date of Wongamania and where you can purchase it.

Get Ready For A Wongamaniac Time!

Last week, we sent two of our bravest champions, Jacqueline and Jasmine for the media preview of Sentosa Spooktacular 2014 and according to them, it was truly a spooky night as the entire 40,000 square metres of Fort Siloso was redeveloped into Spooktacular Village, Laddaland.

Situated along the coast of Sentosa, Fort Siloso is known for its rich background; from serving as Singapore’s coastal defence in the 1880s, to being a prison camp during the Japanese Occupation of World War II. Its historical background makes it an ideal location to stage an immersive real-life haunted village experience.

Each haunted house is themed after international hits by GTH such as Alone, Countdown and Laddaland, and their upcoming 2014 production, The Swimmers. Visitors can choose their preferred neighbourhoods and horror pathways, treading through 15 to 20 minutes of prolonged fear and suspense each time. With elements from the movies infused into various parts of the haunted Laddaland at Sentosa’s Spooktacular Village, one can expect a concoction of spine-chilling Asian folklore and out-of-this-world trepidations that will arrest all human senses.

Our Personal Review/Opinion of Sentosa Spooktacular

The Fort Siloso is a really apt place for hosting the Sentosa Spooktacular 2014 because of its many spooky tales. The ambience and atmosphere is very eerie and scary. The props and makeup of the scare actors were a little bit extreme but it was overall a thrilling good time.

If you are afraid of entering the haunted houses but would like to roam around the grounds of Laddaland, you can purchase the Kia Gui Pass that cost only SGD$16.60. If you suddenly feel brave enough to venture into the haunted house, you just have to top up an additional SGD$50.

However, having said all these, Sentosa Spooktacular 2014 is definitely not suitable for children aged 12 years and below. In fact, teenagers aged 13 to 15 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian aged 21 years and above. Sentosa Spooktacular 2014 is also not recommended for expectant mothers, and for anyone who suffers from heart disease, high blood pressure, major vertigo cases or claustrophobia.

For all you adrenaline junkies, get ready for a heart-stopping time! Standard Tickets will cost SGD$66.60 per person and they are on sale now for the following dates; 17, 18, 24, 25, 31 October and 1 November 2014!

As tickets are expected to sell out fast, do make your bookings quickly!

For more information and ticket purchase, do check out Sentosa Spooktacular Website and Sentosa Spooktacular Facebook Page.

Just last Friday, both Jacqueline and I were at Universal Studios Singapore for Halloween Horror Nights 4 and we had a rather exhaustive night of queuing up and getting spooked by the scare-actors. When we were there at 7.45pm, it was already crowded with many people and out of the 4 haunted houses that are available, we only managed to go for two because the rest of the haunted houses had long lines of people!

Apart from the 2 haunted houses [The L.A.B & Jing’s Revenge] that we tried, we also managed to experience 3 out of the 4 scare zones; Demoncracy, Canyon of the Cursed, and Scary Tales. We also had the time to check out Jack’s Nightmare Circus, a show that you truly mustn’t miss!

So without further ado, here’s our personal opinion/review of Halloween Horror Nights 4 @ Universal Studios Singapore…

Haunted Houses

The L.A.B [Laboratory of Alien Breeding]

The topic about Aliens is a rather mysterious one and there is little information about what we know of its existence. If your impression of an Alien resembles that of the E.T. movie, you will be so wrong when you check out The L.A.B at Halloween Horror Nights 4. We waited for a rather long time just to experience The L.A.B and in all honesty, the wait wasn’t quite worth it because it was not as scary as we imagined it to be. There are a couple of jump scares and special effects but it is not so spooky because the interior is quite bright and you can see what is about to come round the corner.

Jing’s Revenge

There are quite a number of ghost stories that are set in a school-based setting and usually, these stories happen in the school toilets or some secluded school block that not many people go to. Well, in Jing’s Revenge, the whole school is literally haunted and it really scared the wits out of us! The interior is rather dim and there are many hidden corners where the scare actors can jump out from. Jing’s Revenge is definitely one of the scariest haunted houses at Halloween Horror Nights 4 but we can’t say for sure because we did not have the time to check out Mati Camp or Jack’s 3-Dementia.

Scare Zones

In 3 out of the 4 scare zones that we went to, it wasn’t so scary because they are staged in open spaces where there are a lot of people. However, it was not a surprise when we heard some ladies screaming as there were props where the scare actors could hide in and perform jump scares on the passer-by. Most of the scare actors at the Scare Zones are also quite obliging when it comes to picture-taking so don’t hesitate to snap a picture or two for keepsake.

A photo of Jacqueline with one of the many scare actors.

Demoncracy

All hell has broken loose at the New York Zone and the earth has been torn asunder by diabolical forces! Freaky friends of the underworld will unleash their prowess and wipe out all humans from the face of this earth.

Canyon of the Cursed

Treasure hunters in the wild west had long been drawn to a place that is unmarked on any map and believed to be buried with the gold of the Nevuro tribe. Ignoring the warnings of how this place was guarded by spirits and protected by an ancient chieftain’s curse, these rapacious men and women rode into the unknown and were never seen again until now.

Scary Tales

The forest of disenchantment has ensnared favourite fairy tales and twisted them into nightmares; warping familiar characters into something that is almost beyond recognition. You will never see Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood in the same light ever again.

Show

Jack’s Nightmare Circus

Jack’s Nightmare Circus is largely entertaining as there are a lot of wacky performing acts and usage of pyrotechnics. However, there are only 3 shows a night so make sure you queue up early [15 minutes before showtime] to avoid disappointment.

Overall

Our virgin experience to Halloween Horror Nights 4 is a rather tiring one. As we didn’t purchase the Halloween Horror Nights Express Pass which cost SGD$50 per person, we had to queue and stand at least 35 minutes on average for the haunted houses and relied on our mobile phones to occupy ourselves.

Although we found the scare level of Halloween Horror Nights 4 to be within our comfort zone, we generally don’t recommend it for children under 13 years of age as the event might be too intense.

Tickets to Halloween Horror Nights 4 are still available for October 10, 11, 17, 18, 22-25, 31 and November 1 so if you are interested to give yourself a good scare, you can purchase your tickets directly from the Halloween Horror Nights 4 Website.

For a more detailed and comprehensive review of Halloween Horror Nights 4, we highly recommend that you check out Dejiki’s Blog where there are quite a number of helpful tips.

Thanks to Clover Films Singapore, we were very privileged to have been invited to the Gala Premiere of Black & White: The Dawn Of Justice and we had the rare opportunity to meet Director Tsai Yueh-hsun and Taiwanese Actor Mark Chao in person.

Movie Synopsis of Black & White: The Dawn Of Justice

Panic spreads the whole city as a series of bomb explosions happen within hours and this is just the beginning of a tight-knit conspiracy. Righteous and impulsive, Wu Ying-Xiong is paired up with the intelligent but arrogant loner Chen Zhen to track down the mastermind behind the bombing incidents. Soon Wu and Chen will discover that the bombings are just the prelude to a massive destruction. Stolen military missiles are now aimed at the Harbour City; moreover, a deadly virus is about to breakout, which is so highly contagious that it can devour the whole world in 14 days. All the chaos is planned by the Nightwalkers—a secret assassination squad which used to serve the highest government officials.

Our Personal Opinion/Review of Black & White: The Dawn Of Justice

We know it sounds crazy but guess what; of all the movies that we have caught this year, Black & White: The Dawn Of Justice is the best movie so far!

Black & White: The Dawn Of Justice exceeded all of our expectations and we really enjoyed watching the movie. Although certain scenes were a little over-exaggerated, the storyline of the movie is very intriguing. Not only is the movie full of non-stop explosive action, it also tugs at our emotional strings. The movie is full of CGI effects and while some of them seemed quite unrealistic, it is still way better than Ah Boys to Men or The Lion Men [no hard feelings].

We highly recommend you to watch Black & White: The Dawn Of Justice if you are a fan of action movies! Better still, plan a cohesion outing and jio your NS buddies for this police/army action movie.

The film will be showing in Singapore cinemas on 9 October 2014 [Thursday] and quoting from Mark Chao himself, “Visit the washroom before watching the movie”; you wouldn’t want to miss any part of it. If you are quite eager to catch the movie, sneak previews will be available from 3 October 2014 [Friday] to 6 October 2014 [Monday].

Last week, we had an exclusive opportunity to watch the first episode of Scorpion, a high-octane drama that is inspired by a true story of eccentric genius Walter O’Brien, and we had a splendid good time!

©2014 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Our Personal Opinion of Scorpion

The first episode of Scorpion is truly awesome and you can expect lots of drama and action! It is also extremely interesting to note that Scorpion is inspired by a true story about eccentric genius Walter O’Brien, who saved the world several times, hacked into Nasa computers at the age of 13, and has an IQ of 197, way higher than Albert Einstein’s IQ of 165!

“According to Walter O’Brien, he estimated that 70 percent of the pilot’s plot actually occurred, although he predicted that what viewers believe is true probably isn’t and vice versa.”

©2014 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

The pilot [first episode of Scorpion], which airs on 22 September 2014, was directed by Justin Lin, who directed some of the “Fast & Furious” movies and is set to direct the next film in the “Bourne” series. The characters are based on Walter O’Brien and the people he works with, and the writers have changed the names and cities but episodes depict things that happened, Walter O’Brien said.

If you are a television addict whom have the likings for some action and drama based on a true story, Scorpion is a show you must watch! We trust that you will enjoy this show as much as we do!

Synopsis of Scorpion

©2014 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Scorpion, inspired by a true story, is a high-octane drama about eccentric genius Walter O’Brien and his team of brilliant misfits who comprise the last line of defense against complex, high-tech threats of the modern age. As Homeland Security’s new think tank, O’Brien’s “Scorpion” team includes Toby Curtis, an expert behaviorist who can read anyone; Happy Quinn, a mechanical prodigy; and Sylvester Dodd, a statistics guru.

Pooling their extensive technological knowledge to solve mind-boggling predicaments amazes federal agent Cabe Gallo, who shares a harrowing history with O’Brien. However, while this socially awkward group is comfortable with each other’s humor and quirks, life outside their circle confounds them, so they rely on Paige Dineen, who has a young, gifted son, to translate the world for them. At last, these nerdy masterminds have found the perfect job: a place where they can apply their exceptional brainpower to solve the nation’s crises, while also helping each other learn how to fit in. Justin Lin of The Fast and the Furious directs the pilot episode.

Scorpion premieres on 23 September 2014, Tuesday, at 9:00pm [within 24 hours of the U.S broadcast] on RTL CBS Entertainment HD and you can watch it on SingTel mio TV Channel 318 and StarHub TV Channel 509.

Directed by Richard Linklater [Before Sunrise, Before Sunset], Boyhood is a ground-breaking cinematic experience that was filmed over a period of 12 years, centering on the growth of a boy maturing to a young adult. The movie has reached a rare 100% critic score in Rotten Tomatoes and is hailed as a masterpiece by The New York Times, USA Today, Vanity Fair, The Wrap and The Guardian.

Our Personal Review of Boyhood

Thanks to United International Pictures, we were invited to the exclusive premiere of Boyhood last week and we must say, it is a really fantastic, heart-warming, and relatable movie. There were many light moments and we personally felt that the movie was remarkable; considering the fact that it was filmed over a period of 12 years! The story plot is one which many people can relate to and its coming-of-age story is very real.

If you ask us, Boyhood is definitely one of the best movies to be released this year and we really can’t stop raving about the movie to our friends. Boyhood is only exclusively available at all Cathay Cineplexes and with a running duration of 2 hours 46 minutes, be sure to visit the washroom before watching the movie!

Movie Synopsis of Boyhood

Filmed over short periods from 2002 to 2013, Boyhood is a groundbreaking cinematic experience covering 12 years in the life of a family. At the center is Mason, who with his sister Samantha, is taken on an emotional and transcendent journey through the years, from childhood to adulthood.
