Hello Everyone,
Baby and I are big fans of Bak Kut Teh and in today’s entry, I am going to introduce to you this particular Bak Kut Teh store that we often go to.

Name of Store: Old Ang Mo Kio 628 Lai Jiu Fa Bak Kut Teh
Location: Bock 644, Hougang Avenue 8, #01-261
Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday [09:00-22:00 hours]
Mode of Payment: Cash Only

The following photos show what we usually order whenever we dine there. Besides those shown in the photo, they also have pig trotters, pig intesting, pig stomach and pig liver as well.

From Old Ang Mo Kio 628 Lai Jiu Fa Bak Kut Teh

Their pork ribs are especially tender and juicy, and they are cut into small portions so that it is easier to chew on. What I probably like most about this dish is the soup as it is extremely fragrant and smooth-tasting. You may also request to top up your soup when you have finished it.

From Old Ang Mo Kio 628 Lai Jiu Fa Bak Kut Teh

As you can see, the pig kidney is still semi-cooked. Hence, my advise if you were to eat this is to leave it in the hot soup for awhile or eat it last.

From Old Ang Mo Kio 628 Lai Jiu Fa Bak Kut Teh

You have the option to have your bowl of white rice drizzled with their specially-made sauce which is really yummy and flavourful.

If you want to order some light side-dishes, you could order their peanuts or beancurd skin as they taste really wholesome and appetising.

Well, this Bak Kut Teh store is just one of our very good finds which I would like to share with you all, so happy eating~!

Hello Everyone,
I have been wanting to try Cafe Cartel and have been putting off the idea for months until Baby and I decided to try out their desserts. The Cafe Cartel that we went to was the one located at Serangoon NeX. It opens for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner and they are open until 12am on weekends for desserts! So, anyway, we decided to go for desserts because they are offering a 50% discount on their cakes/desserts/coffee beverages from 9pm daily!

What We Ordered

Blackforest Cake $3.40

Overall Dining Experience

By the way, we dined there twice for desserts and we had such a pleasant experience that we definitely would be visiting Cafe Cartel again. In fact, the price for desserts after 9PM is really worth it; given the quiet ambience and the quality of the desserts. If you’re planning for a gathering and you’re looking for a venue, you might just want to consider Cafe Cartel as they have huge space available to accommodate big groups of people. I shan’t really comment much on the quality of the desserts as I believe you should be able to tell it straight from the pictures.

The next time I visit Cafe Cartel, I will definitely want to try their hearty breakfast set!

Bon Appetit!

Hello Everyone,
today I am going to introduce to you a very popular eating place known as Chomp Chomp located @ Serangoon Gardens. For those of you whom are expatriates in Singapore, you might just want to check out this place if you prefer an alternative to Newton Food Centre. Here, you can savour the local foodfare at really good prices. The atmosphere here is lively and very vibrant. With pubs that open till the wee morning, the night scene here is something to look out for if you just want a quiet drink in a neighbourhood kind of setting.

Chomp Chomp is a good eating place for big groups of people as well. However, one disadvantage is this, finding a place to sit down and have a dinner is difficult. It’s not impossible but its really tough, and you got to be really patient in order to find the perfect spot for dining. There are dozen of stores there selling BBQ food like Stingrays, Otah, Satay and there are also other stores that sells Desserts, Drinks, Popiah, Rojak, Oyster Omelette, Noodles and etc. To be really honest with you, each store has their own unique way of cooking and hence, the taste of a BBQ Sambal Stingray for example, may different from store to store. So, you got to really frequent Chomp Chomp and try ordering from different stores so as to find the perfect taste that you’re very comfortable with.

The best thing about eating at Chomp Chomp is probably the awesome pricing!  The food is not that expensive and its shown on the store’s signages, unlike the stores in Newton Food Centre that tends to rip people’s pockets unknowingly.

Rojak

IMG-20110903-00025

Popiah

IMG-20110903-00028

The Rojak cost me $3 while the Popiah cost me $2.40 for 2. Both of them are from the same store and they taste really really good! You should try it!

Oyster Omelette

IMG-20110903-00030

The Oyster Omelette is not bad but I might not buy from the same store ever again because the oysters are not  fresh! It cost $3 anyway. My friend, Aldaias knows the best place for Oyster Omelette and I will post an entry about that very soon!

Char Kway Teow

IMG-20110903-00029

The Char Kway Teow is average for my taste and it cost $3. In fact, the best Char Kway Teow I have ever tasted in my life is situated at Marine Parade Food Centre, near the Macdonald’s. The name of the store is Apollo Char Kway Teow. Do check it out and perhaps you might just know the reason why I say its the best Char Kway Teow.

Longan Drink

IMG-20110903-00031

The Longan Drink cost $3 but seriously, its very tantalising and super refreshing! What’s more, it’s so huge that it can serve 2 people!

Ice-Jelly Cocktail

IMG-20110903-00032

The Ice-Jelly Cocktail cost about $2 and the taste is just so-so. The jelly tastes super bland and its kinda hard. In fact, the best Ice-Jelly (or also otherwise known as AiYu Jelly) that I have ever tasted is the one my mum makes at home. So, its priceless. If you want to taste some or perhaps find out how my mother makes them, do drop me an email at melvin.ocs@gmail.com and I will share with you more.

The last dish that Baby and I ordered was the BBQ Chicken Wings which costs us about $4 plus for 4 pieces of chicken wings. Pardon me for not putting up any photo of the Chicken Wings as we were both so engrossed with the wings that in the heat of the moment, we totally forgotten to take a picture of them.

In total we spent less than $20 for 2 persons and that makes up about $10 per person. For such high quality and inexpensive food, there’s a reason to visit Chomp Chomp!

Bon Appetit!

Hello Everyone,
today I’m going to do a review about Wanchai Hong Kitchen @ Serangoon NeX.

How We Ended Up At Wanchai Hong Kong Kitchen

Baby and I wanted to try some desserts at Serangoon NeX and there are tons of stores that sells desserts. After walking a few rounds, we decided to give Wanchai Hong Kong Kitchen a try.

What We Ordered

Gingko Nut & Barley

IMG_0587

The Gingko Nut and Barley is not very sweet and tastes like the Quaker Oats my mum makes at home. I can’t even feel the beancurd skin on my tongue because it has been blended to a liquid state. In my opinion, its very average and nothing really special. For $3.30, its so not worth it!

Milk Pudding & Fresh Mango Sauce

IMG_0586

According to Baby, the Milk Pudding and Fresh Mango Sauce isn’t very fantastic because the taste is very bland. In her opinion, the $3.50 is not worth paying for!

Peanut Butter Toast

IMG_0590

This costs us $3.20 and to be brutally honest, its way below my expectations. The toast wasn’t as thick as it claims to be and in fact, even the average coffeeshop can make better tasting toasts than this. I have had better tasting toasts at other Hong Kong Cafes. This dish is simply just CRAP!

Overall Experience

The Whole Unpleasant Experience That Costs Us $10.70

IMG_0589

I don’t exactly know how their other dishes like appetisers and main courses taste like as we didn’t order them. But if the simple desserts we had are not even up to our expectations, I highly doubt their other dishes will be any different. All in all, we don’t recommend dining here for desserts as the price and quality are not correlated; You will be better off going for desserts elsewhere.

YUCKS!

Hello Everyone,
today I am going to introduce to you this restaurant called, “Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant” or “?????” in Chinese.

How We Ended Up At Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant?

As Baby and I decided that we would be heading to the Flea Market at the Singapore Arts Museum after our dinner, we decided to walk around Plaza Singapura in search of a good dining place for dinner. Initially, we wanted to go to Lao Beijing to eat but due to the overwhelming queue, we decided to head one level down and ended up at the shop front of Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant. Though we still had to queue, we didn’t mind as we were second in line and the food looked pretty tempting. In fact, we waited for about less than 10 minutes when we were brought to our seats.

That’s Me

IMG_0595

Some Interesting Information About Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

To preserve the culinary standards of Nanxiang in Shanghai. their kitchens here are helmed by veteran Chefs from the original restaurant in Cheng Huang Temple! The restaurant offers a unique interior decor theme that features the iconic Chinese bamboo baskets used for steaming buns.

Restaurant Service

The level of service rendered by the service staffs were average. Upon showing us to our seats, the waitress asked if it was our first time dining there. We said, “Yes!” and the waitress then proceeded to explain to us how we could go about ordering our food and even recommended us some of their well known dishes.

The Dishes that We Ordered

Our Appetiser

IMG_0598

Peanuts that cost $1. You can choose not to have it if you don’t want it.

Homemade Beancurd

IMG_0600

This dish is a recommended dish by the Chef and we decided to place an order for it. The beancurd was nicely fried and the fillings inside the beancurd were very fragrant. To me, it seemed and tasted like another kind of Dim Sum but really, we found this dish to be quite unique.

Pan-Fried Dumpling

IMG_0602

I have tried many pan-fried dumpling from many Chinese restaurants and I must say, the pan-fried dumpling that Nanxiang serves is pretty good. Usually, when I dine at other Chinese restaurants to try their pan-fried dumpling, their dumpling either ends up over-fried or under-fried, but for Nanxiang, their pan-fried dumpling is fried just nice. Over-fried dumplings are very hard to chew and the skin is hard while under-fried dumplings tend to be overly-glazed with oil.

Crabmeat Steamed Bun

IMG_0605

This dish is also recommended by the Chef and YES, YOU HAVE TO ORDER IT! When the steamed buns arrived on our table, we could smell the lovely aroma of the buns and we started to salivate. As we all would know, “xiao long bao” is a very delicate food and it must be handed with care so as to savour the natural juices of the filling in the bun. For this particular dish, the juices that ooze out of the fillings were very tasty and flavourful.

Minced Pork Noodles

IMG_0599

The minced pork noodles is cooked with black bean sauce and the taste of it reminds me of home. Why so? After eating a big mouthful of noodles, it really reminded me of the black bean fish that I always eat for dinner at home. If you are looking for something that taste rather homely and light, you might just want to try this.

Golden Fried Rice

IMG_0604

This is really a sweet and spicy tasting dish. In fact, I have to admit that this have to be one of the best-tasting fried rice I ever had. The servings of pork floss were very generous and the fried rice was extremely fragrant. Although the fried rice might have a “sambal” taste, there really isn’t any sambal added to it. The sweet taste comes from the pork floss while the spicy taste comes from the powdered chilli. This dish is perfect for those who wants something filling and good-tasting.

In Summary

In total, we spent $47.79  and because there is a 10% discount for DBS Cardholders, our final bill was $43.47. Its definitely a pretty reasonable price to dine here.

Hello Everyone,
today I am going to put up yet another food review again. I have done a review of Sakon Thai Restaurant on my previous website before, but because of a strong demand for a repost, here’s the LATEST and UPDATED review.

Address of Sakon Thai: Blk 152 Serangoon North Ave 1, #01-304

Contact Number: +65 6288 8225 (you can call and make a reservation, peak periods are usually from 7PM onwards)

Introduction:

Baby and I have dined at this popular Thai restaurant for 3 times already and the food served here has never once failed us. What is probably so attractive about dining at this restaurant is the affordability and value-for-money dining experience. However, for all of our visits to the same outlet at Serangoon North, their utensils are always not washed properly and hence, this is quite a turn off for those of us who are pretty particular about hygiene. Service level was slightly above average as most of the service staffs are from Thailand (Thai people are really friendly and they attend to people really well).

The Dishes That We Ordered From All Of Our Visits:

Sakon Thai Restaurant

Sakon Thai

Sakon Thai Restaurants serves really good AUTHENTIC THAI FOOD at really affordable prices!

Ambience of the Restaurant

Ambience

The restaurant has a pretty cosy kind of ambience. Great for dining in big groups or with family members.

Porcelain Wares Used for Sauces

Porcelain Wares

From what I understand, neighbourhood restaurants seldom use Porcelain Wares to serve condiments due to the expensive price, but Sakon Thai does it and this probably increases the visual appeal of the dishes they serve.

Stuffed Chicken Wings *MUST TRY*

Stuffed Chicken Wings

The Stuffed Chicken Wings is a dish you MUST TRY although the waiting time for it can be quite long. The chicken is soft and tender and as you sink your teeth into it, you will realise that the chicken is actually boneless and that the meat is stuffed with wholesome chestnuts. It’s worth the wait!

Spicy Mango Salad

Spicy Mango Salad

Honestly, I didn’t really fancy this dish as it was pretty spicy and the mango salad was way too sour for my liking. I still prefer the one that is served at ThaiExpress.

Tom Yum Seafood Clear Soup

Tom Yam Seafood Clear Soup

It is incomplete to have a Thai meal without Tom Yum Soup and so we ordered one and boy, it tasted really good. For me, I find that the spicyness of the soup was just right and the seafood they added, such as prawns, sotongs, sliced fish meats were very fresh. You can have a choice of thick soup or clear soup and for your information, thick soup is more spicy than clear soup.

Thai Pineapple Fried Rice

Pineapple Fried Rice

The Thai Pineapple Fried Rice is probably quite similar in taste as those which I tried in other restaurants but I like the fact that Sakon Thai’s Pineapple Fried Rice is served with meat floss, making the dish slightly sweet-tasting to complement the sour taste of the pineapple.

Honey Chicken with Egg Rice

Honey Chicken with Egg Rice

The next time I visit Sakon Thai, I would probably order this dish for myself because when I had a bite of the honey chicken, it tasted heavenly. The honey chicken was juicy, tender, and sweet. I would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND this dish.

Phad Thai Chicken

Phad Thai Chicken

When I ate this dish, it really reminded me of my two Thai friends who once cooked the same dish as well. The taste was really authentic and the serving was pretty generous. What I probably didn’t quite like was the chicken as it was overcooked.

Thai Red Ruby Dessert

Red Ruby

The first time I tried the Red Ruby Dessert at ThaiExpress, I quite like it and hence decided to try out the Red Ruby that is served at Sakon Thai. The Red Ruby served at Sakon Thai is not that sweet (for those who are limiting their intake of sugar, this could be quite a welcoming dessert) and the taste is just right. However, the coconut ice-cream served was pretty much melted so I didn’t quite like it. Personally, I still fancy the Red Ruby that’s served at ThaiExpress.

Thai Iced Tea

Thai Iced Tea

The Thai Ice Tea wasn’t that fantastic because it has a rather odd burnt taste. So, we don’t recommend this one unless you have spare cash and want to try it out. Sakon Thai serves ice-water at no additional charge.

Overall Dining Experience?

Sakon Thai is worth checking out. From all our visits to Sakon Thai, our average bill per person is no more than $20 and to me, that really is great value for an authentic taste of Thai food. What’s more, they don’t charge the 10% service charge as well. So, the next time you are craving for some authentic Thai Food and you are around Serangoon, do remember to try Sakon Thai!

Bon Appetite!

Hello Everyone,
today, I am going to put up a food review on LENAS Restaurant @ Serangoon NeX Shopping Mall.

Why We Decided to Dine at LENAS?

Alright, Baby and I made a decision that the both of us will try every food outlet there is at NeX and so, we decided to try LENAS out this time again (yes, it’s our second time dining here).

What’s So Special About LENAS?

The dining ambience of the restaurant is totally cosy and warm. There are also seats by the window of which you can get a good look of Serangoon (not that Serangoon has anything to view either). And because it is a brand concept under Ministry of Food (M.O.F), you can also use the Citizen Membership Card here for dining discounts and rebates too. The service level is good but it hasn’t really exceeded my expectations yet because it takes a while for service staffs to respond (even when you wave your hands frantically). The variety of food, beverage, and desserts choices simply blown us away as there were many (and yes I mean extremely many) items you could choose from. The cuisine served is mainly Western.

Is it Expensive to Dine There?

The cost of dining at LENAS is rather reasonable. Our bill for the first visit was around $30 and our bill for the second visit was around $50+.

What Are the Privileges of Being A Citizen Member?

Ok, you MUST sign up for the Citizen Membership Card! The perks are really good, way better than what ThaiExpress or New York New York could offer.

  • 10% off total bill.
  • 20% off on selected meal of the day and dessert.
  • Free Tea or Coffee every time you visit the outlet.
  • Additional 2% Citizen Rebate Dollars for your next visit.
  • Complimentary dessert during your Birthday Month in one of your visits.
  • Discounts at overseas branches.
  • Waiver of Citizenship renewal fee with minimum spending of S$600 within 2 years.

And ALL THIS ONLY FOR $10 For A 2 Years Membership!

Alright, So What Did We Ordered During Our Visits?

LENAS!

Psst. Pictures on my blog are all taken by Baby. So if you want to hire her for photography, do contact me! =P

There are a variety of food, drinks, and desserts choices that you can choose from at LENAS. It will probably take you a couple of visits to try all of them!

Spaghetti Served with Grilled Chicken and Coleslaw (Kids Meal)

Spaghetti served with Grilled Chicken and Colesaw

Although this dish was meant to be a kids meal, the portion is still pretty huge and Baby couldn’t finish them. And so, I helped to finish it. The chicken was crispy and the spaghetti was cooked al-dente. The tomato sauce used was good but it could be better if they added some minced meat like chicken, beef, or pork.

Spicy Grilled Chicken Served with Colesaw and Corn

Spicy Grilled Chicken Served with Colesaw and Corn

When they said spicy. It really meant SPICY. The chicken was grilled nicely but what probably disappointed me was that the chicken was served warm and not piping hot. The coleslaw was huge and the corn wasn’t that sweet tasting as the one Aston had.

Cream of Mushroom Soup Served in Sour Bread Bowl

Cream of Mushroom Soup in Sour Bread Bowl

This is one dish you ought to order if you love creamy mushroom soup. The soup tasted really fresh and the Sour Bread complements the soup pretty well. It’s a pity the portion of soup served is pretty small for the price of $8.90!

White Wine Seafood Deluxe Spaghetti

White Wine Seafood Deluxe Spaghetti

I have tried something similar at Pastamania but I find that the White Wine Seafood Deluxe Spaghetti served at LENAS is way better. The spaghetti is cooked al-dente and the seafood were pretty fresh. The “soupy” sauce goes well with the seafood as white wine is added. The aroma blended pretty well with the dish. It’s a pity the portion is too small for me.

Grilled Chicken serve with Cheesy Baked Rice

Grilled Chicken serve with Cheesy Baked Rice

After choosing for quite some time, Baby decided to have the Grilled Chicken served with Cheesy Baked Rice. The grilled chicken was firm in texture and it tasted really good. As I’m not a fan of cheese, I can’t really comment much but Baby said that the cheese was nicely cooked as it had the “springy” effect when she scoops up the rice. I must admit though, it looks pretty appetising.

Craneberry Juice with Mixed Berries and Strawberry Ice-Cream

Craneberry Juice with Mixed Berries and Strawberry Ice-Cream

The cool thing about LENAS is that they always have promotions every other day. As we visited LENAS on a Wednesday Night, they had a Ladies Night Promotion where Ladies are entitled to a free milk-tea drink or free fruit-juice drink. And so, Baby decided to have this. Although the strawberry ice-cream and mixed berries were very tantalising, the cranberry juice tasted extremely sour. So, I guess we won’t be ordering any cranberry drinks from LENAS the next time we visit.

Fried Bananas Served with Chocolate Ice-Cream

Fried Bananas with Chocolate Ice-Cream

There were many desserts to choose from and alas, I decided to settle for this. I liked the fried-bananas as they were deep-fried in light batter until golden brown, and when I took a bite of it with the chocolate sauce that was drizzled over, it tasted very heavenly. The chocolate ice-cream complements the fried-bananas pretty well because while the fried-bananas were hot, the chocolate ice-cream was cold (just how warm brownies are served with ice-creams)!

Overall Experience?

Well, it is worth a visit to LENAS and we will definitely be going back there to try their high-tea desserts buffet!

Bon Appetite!

Hello Everyone,
today I am going to introduce you to this place that serves awesome Dim Sum and that is, “Wen Dou Sek”.

Wen Dou Sek is situated at 126 Sims Ave, Singapore 387449, and their contact number is 67464757.

So what’s the hype about this Dim Sum eating place?

Well, for one, Baby and I always frequent this place if we are craving for some Dim Sum. It is open 24 hours and the Dim Sum served are freshly made on the spot. Not just that, their Dim Sum is probably one of the best that I have ever tasted. Most of the time that Baby and I frequent there, our bills are in the range of $27-$30, which on the average, is about $15 per person. Pretty reasonable I should say.

Fried Prawn Rolls 5 Stars

Fried Prawn Roll

*This dish costs $4.00 and this is something you MUST ORDER because it is absolutely crispy and tasty. The prawns are fresh and wholesome. Try it to believe!

Tofu Rojak 3 Stars

Toufu Rojak

This dish costs $3.00 and tastes sweet and sour. Not exactly fantastic but good enough.

Seaweed Tofu 5 Stars

Seaweed Toufu

Ok, I forgotten how much this dish costs but this is also something that you MUST ORDER if you love Tofu. The Tofu is soft and delicate and the sauce makes it even more yummy-tasting.

Siew Mai 3 Stars

Siew Mai

This dish costs $2.50 and is not really up to my expectations as I have tasted better Siew Mais at other Dim Sum restaurants.

Shitake Mushrooms 4 Stars

Shitake Mushroom

Again, I don’t have the price for this so pardon me, but if you are a “mushroom” person and you enjoy mushrooms, this could be something worth ordering as I did enjoyed mine when I ordered it.

Char Siew Chee Cheong Fun 4 Stars

Chee Cheong Fun

This dish costs $3.50 and its really nice. The sauce is sweet-tasting and the Chee Cheong Fun is firm in texture.

Fried Carrot Cake 5 Stars

Fried Carrot Cake

This dish costs $3.50 and is also another dish you MUST ORDER because of its crispy texture, unlike the traditional carrot cake.

For drinks, you could try their Homemade Barley which costs $2.00 per bowl. There were other dishes that we ordered such as Egg Tarts and Prawn Dumplings but unfortunately, I do not have the photos with me at the moment. Nonetheless, do visit 126 Dim Sum Eating Place because it is worth the trip for some mouth-watering Dim Sum. If you want to find out more, you may drop me an email at melvin.ocs@gmail.com

Bon Appetite!
