Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons [directed and written] by Stephen Chow was released on 7 February and Baby and I caught it on the 1st day of Chinese New Year [10 February]. Coincidentally, it so happened that the Cable Channel was screening two films starring Stephen Chow and so, we caught three films of Stephen Chow in a single day!

Movie Plot [as extracted from GV’s Website]:
This is a world plagued by demons, causing its human inhabitants unspeakable sufferings. Young demon hunter Xuan Zang, fearlessly guided by the belief of “giving himself for the greater cause”, risks his all and conquers a fish demon, a pig demon and the demon of all demons, Sun Wukong. He takes them in as his disciples, and melts them with love. Meanwhile, Xuan Zang discovers the true meaning of Greater Love himself. In order to atone for their own sins and save the lay people, the four or them embark on a journey to the west that’s full of challenges…

Our Review of the Movie:
People whom have caught Stephen Chow’s films before would probably have two types of reactions; the first being that the film is lame and a waste of money, and the second being that the film is hilarious and a good avenue to laugh it out loud. Personally, we are pretty neutral about the film.

In fact, we laughed throughout the movie but more than just laughing it out loud, we felt that the story of “Journey to the West” was so adulterated that everyone whom is familiar with the story of “Journey to the West” and expects something similar in Stephen Chow’s movie would be in for a disappointment.

With that being said, if you’re a fan of Stephan Chow or you enjoy watching movies like Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle and the likes, Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons might be something that might interest you.
