A Review of Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical- Now Showing in Singapore

I have been a big fan of British Author Roald Dahl ever since I started reading his book novels more than 2 decades ago and his books never fails to captivate me. Some of Roald Dahl’s works which I have read include James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Danny, The Champion of the World, The BFG, and Matilda. Hence, you can imagine my excitement when I had the privilege to attend the Gala Premiere of Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical at Sands Theatre @ Marina Bay Sands.

Musical Synopsis

The musical follows Matilda, a precocious 5-year-old girl who loves reading and learning but is suppressed by her TV-obsessed parents who pay her little attention. As she grows up, she begins to resist the challenges and obstacles presented to her, learning that sometimes you have to be a “little bit naughty” in order to get through life. As she begins to master living with her family, her world is thrown into disarray as she starts a new school under the tyrannous grip of Headteacher Miss Trunchbull. Seeking solace in the library in a world of her imagination and creation, Matilda forms strong bonds with adults such as Librarian Mrs Phelps and her class teacher Miss Honey. Together they give her the confidence to embrace her special gift and individuality which is needed to reclaim her life.

My Personal Thoughts

I truly enjoyed Matilda The Musical; so much so that I found myself humming to the tune of “When I Grow Up” even after the show! The meticulously-crafted lyrics of the musical numbers by Olivier Award winner Tim Minchin unfold the story through songs like “Naughty” and “Miracle” and the production sets and costumes by Tony Award® winner Rob Howell are intricately designed. Coupled with the dazzling lighting by Tony Award® winner Hugh Vanstone, the whole stage comes alive.

With an incredible cast of young performers, Matilda The Musical inspires and delights audiences both young and old. The timeless story of a small girl’s determination to challenge those above her for the greater good, combined with Roald Dahl’s signature wit and naughtiness, makes this an unforgettable musical.

The Singapore season marks the first time the hit musical has ventured to Asia, having toured to Australia and New Zealand from 2015-2017 and it will be showing here from now till 17 March 2019 for a limited time only. Also, if you’re a Passion Cardholder or a SingTel Subscriber, you can get the tickets at a 10% discount (terms & conditions apply).

Just so you know, tickets for weekday shows are cheaper than weekends and if you’re wondering which category of tickets to get, we would suggest getting either the Category C Reserve or the Category B Reserve tickets as the seats are decent enough for a great vantage point.

Lastly, even if you have not read the novel before, the story and plot is easy to follow and you will definitely be enchanted by the spellbinding scenes.

Blue Man Group- Enemy of Monotony, Remedy for Boredom, Promoter of Overjoy and Elation

Presented by Nick Grace Management, Lunchbox Theatrical Group, Sliding Doors Entertainment and BASE Entertainment Asia; Jacqueline and I caught the Blue Man Group at the Marina Bay Sands Mastercard Theatres 3 days ago and it was such a splendid performance that there was never a dull moment from start till end and we totally enjoyed ourselves that delightful evening.

Honestly, it’s been a long while since we last attended a performance like this and we really like how the Blue Man Group captivated the audiences with their humorous and interactive antics. While most of the musical entertainment were mainly instrumental rock with no vocals, it got us rocking and swaying with the crowds anyway.

In case you’re wondering; Blue Man Group is comedy, theatre, rock concert and dance party all rolled into one and for the first time in Singapore, this global phenomenon will blow audiences away with their high energy show. Now approaching their 25th year of creativity, this artistic group has been a smash hit off Broadway and on the Las Vegas Strip and cannot wait to redefine entertainment in Singapore.

We must also say, the backstage crew were certainly well coordinated and the lighting effects were out of the ordinary. There were a lot of 3D digital effects application and they were certainly very mesmerising.

So what can you expect out of the Blue Man Group?

Blue Man Group creates experiences that defy categorisation, taking the audience on a journey that is funny, intelligent and visually stunning, culminating in the trademark Blue Man Group finale in a blissful party atmosphere. Blue Man Group is accompanied by a live band whose tribal rhythms help drive the show to its unforgettable climax.

The Phantom of the Opera Gala Night @ Marina Bay Sands [Mastercard Theatre]

Two days ago, we were extremely privileged and honoured to have been invited to the Gala Night of The Phantom of the Opera at the Marina Bay Sands [Mastercard Theatre] and we really enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.

We felt like superstars! 😛

In case you’re wondering, The Phantom of the Opera is a musical that tells a heart-wrenching story of the mysterious, hideously disfigured Phantom who lives beneath the Paris Opera House, and his obsession with the young singer Christine. Disguised as the ‘Angel of Music’ he devotes himself to creating a new opera star, and winning her love from his rival, Raoul, while exercising a reign of terror over the Opera House.

The theatre was packed with people even before the performance commence.

The team from The Phantom of the Opera has performed in Singapore at the Kallang Theatre in 1995 and at the Esplanade Theatre in 2007. This year, The Phantom of the Opera will be showing at the Marina Bay Sands, Mastercard Theatre and they will performing here in Singapore till 25 August 2013!

Now, if you haven’t watch The Phantom of the Opera before, you absolutely have to catch it! Even as we’re typing this blog post, recalling our experience certainly gives us the goosebumps because it was our first time watching The Phantom of the Opera and it has left quite a lasting impression on us. In fact, we felt our emotions running high when we were in the theatre watching the splendid performance.

Music of the Night is our all-time favourite music in The Phantom of the Opera.

To be honest, The Phantom of the Opera is a show that you must catch at least once in your lifetime. As for us, we will definitely be catching it the next time it returns to Singapore or if we’re travelling overseas to London/New York.

The Phantom of the Opera is the world’s most successful and popular musical, and the longest-running show on Broadway. It celebrated its 27th anniversary on the West End stage last year, and continues to play to full houses nightly in London, New York and around the world. The Phantom of the Opera has been seen by over 130 million people worldwide, has been performed in more than 27 countries, has won over 50 major theatre awards, and has grossed more than US$5.6 billion.

The Phantom of the Opera is truly God’s gift to musical theatre.
