great eastern women run

It certainly feels great to be a woman during the Great Eastern Women Run that was held last Sunday at the Marina Bay Floating Platform.

Despite the light drizzle and overcast sky, women from all walks of life displayed courage and endurance when they came together with the aim of completing the wet and challenging run. At the flag-off point, the women were really enthusiastic about the run and many supporters comprising of the women’s brothers, boyfriend, husband, sons and etc., were there to lend their support and cheer the women on!

In less than 34 minutes after the flag-off for the 10KM Race Category, the first woman to cross the finishing line is from Kenya.

Jacqueline participated in the 10KM Race Category and completed the run in less than 90 minutes, a timing that I considered not too bad for someone who didn’t even train for the run!

To be honest, I was initially quite concerned about the safety of the runners due to the bad weather but the race organiser really took painstaking efforts to ensure that medical coverage was sufficient. However, Jacqueline did commented that it would have been better if the race routes for both the 5KM and 10KM categories are different as there were areas that experienced heavy human traffic; making the race quite difficult to run.

To further provide an enhanced running experience, there were also 21 female pacers for the 10km and 21.1km route this year, marking a first for a run in Singapore. The pacers, who had to undergo two months of training, were cherry picked by Team FatBird.

Although the run was only meant for the ladies, the men and children were able to entertain themselves at the Live Great Carnival that were bustling with many activities.

The Great Eastern Women’s Run was also an opportunity for female runners to raise awareness and funds for health issues closely associated with women. This year, $38,370 were raised for the Breast Cancer Foundation, Singapore Heart Foundation, Singapore Cancer Society [Cancer Prevention Fund] and Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations.

I’m pretty sure Jacqueline would be raring to sign up for the Great Eastern Women’s Run next year; especially when she was pampered with the tons of goodies that were made available! If only there was such a race for the men!

Asia’s largest and favourite All-Women Run is back and its bigger and better! The run, commissioned by Great Eastern Life and organised by HiVelocity Events Pte Ltd, will take place on Sunday, 10 November 2013, and the race will see participants run past iconic landmarks such as Marina Bay Sands, Merlion Park, Esplanade, Singapore Flyer, F1 Pit Building and the upcoming Singapore Sports Hub. Both the start and finish points will be at The Float@Marina Bay.

The Great Eastern Women’s Run will feature three categories and they are the 5km Live Great! Fun Run Category, the 10km [Open/Closed] Category, and the 21.1km Half Marathon [Open/Closed] Category.

This year, two new sub categories have also been added for the 10km and 21km run where runners from the same company can sign up in teams of four if they don’t wish to run alone.

As per last year, participants can opt to run for a good cause. They can select from four women-related charities or run for a cause they personally endorse. The four charities are the Breast Cancer Foundation, the Singapore Cancer Society [Cervical Cancer Prevention Fund], the Singapore Heart Foundation, and the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations.

Registration is now open and the early bird promotion will conclude on 21 July 2013.

Similarly, Great Eastern policyholders, OCBC cardholders and 2012 Great Eastern Women’s Run loyal runners will also enjoy a special rate until 21 July 2013.

The special launch event for the Great Eastern Women’s Run will be taking place this Saturday, 20 July 2013, from 4pm at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park Grand Lawn I and to encourage stronger family bonds and friendship ties, the special launch event has been organised as a family-themed carnival, along with a preview of the fringe activities that runners can look forward to.

Women who pre-registered for the special launch event can take part in the Live Great Fitness Fiesta, where there will be live demonstrations of the latest dance crazes in Singapore such as the Bokwa and Tahiti Dance. Instructors from True Fitness and Tahiti Dance and Fitness will be conducting the live demonstrations. Although the RSVP list is currently full, all ladies are still welcomed to join in the workout at 4pm!

As a way for friends and family to show their love and support, a pledge board will be put up at Bishan Park, allowing them to pledge their support for their loved ones as the women take up the challenge of living healthier.

Other exciting activities include a scrapbook making competition, where anyone can take photos at the photo booth, decorate them, and pen motivational messages for the women they are supporting. Kids will also be spoilt for choices with exciting activities such as face painting, balloon sculpting, and even a game of mini soccer with their dads.
