TV Shows

For those of you whom don’t have Cable TV at home, you might be wondering what exactly is Syfy because I have exactly the same question before coming to know what Syfy is. Even then, there were a handful of people whom have Cable TV at home but didn’t know about Syfy‘s existence as well.

Syfy was originally launched in 1992 as a SCI FI Channel and it is currently a media destination for imagination-based entertainment which does not limits itself to science fiction but also fantasy, paranormal, and adventure too. In Singapore, Syfy is available on Starhub Cable TV [Channel 526].

So now that you know what Syfy is, let’s go on to talk about Defiance, a 12-episode science fiction series that takes an unprecedented approach to storytelling by uniting scripted television and online gaming.

Here we were at the Screening Room last week for an exclusive preview screening of Defiance‘s 1st episode.

From Syfy Defiance Preview 2013

+Some answers to the Frequently Asked Questions about the Defiance Series+

From Syfy Defiance Preview 2013

What is the Defiance Series about?

Set in the near future, Defiance introduces an exotically transformed planet Earth where its landscapes are permanently altered following the sudden and tumultuous arrival of seven unique alien races. In this somewhat unknown and unpredictable landscape, the richly diverse, newly-formed civilization of humans and aliens must learn to co-exist peacefully.

What’s so special about the Defiance Series?
Five years in the making and with a budget of US$40 million for the first season, Defiance is Syfy’s biggest and most ambitious undertaking in its 20 year history. One unique thing about Defiance is that it takes an unprecedented approach to storytelling, uniting scripted television and online gaming for the very first time. This means that the weekly drama will have an impact on the game and gamers can actually have the opportunity to change the show as well.

How many episodes are there in the Defiance Series?
There are in total 12 episodes [13 hours] with the first episode being 2-hours long.

If you’re a Sci-Fi fan, do tune in to Syfy on Starhub Channel 526 and catch the Defiance Series which premieres today at 10.50pm! Also, if you’re interested in the Defiance Game, do check out Defiance‘s website for more information: http://www.defiance.com/en/

Hello Everyone,

I’m not exactly sure how many of you readers are fans of Rain but I have an exciting piece of news for you!

Rain: The Best Show will be making its television premiere on Celestial Movies before any other channel in the world. With a budget of over US$3 million, the concert was shot in 3D (although it will be broadcasted in 2D) and it is a culmination of Rain’s greatest hits from his 10-year career as an artist and superstar. The concert was recorded on 25th September, 2011 at Seoul’s Olympic Park Gymnastics Stadium during the last stop of his world tour. This was Rain’s final concert performance before his enlistment into South Korean military last year. Hence, he will not be able to perform commercially until the completion of his service term in July 2013. Therefore, the TV debut of Rain: The Best Show, will be the only opportunity for fans in Singapore to relive and indulge in Rain’s suave and electrifying persona during the concert at this point in time.

Hello Everyone,

I was privileged to have the honour of being invited by SPRG to an exclusive screening event for an upcoming big-budget [yes, really big] Korean action drama entitled, “HERO”.

From Hero Premiere 2012

Synopsis of HERO [extracted from the Press Kit released by Celestial Movies]:

In the near future, the Republic of South Korea is bankrupt. Mooyoung, a port city which dreamed of being Asia’s financial center, is heading towards demise. It’s a dark world where evil knows no bounds, and justice is obsolete. In the midst of the crisis, an unexpected hero emerges. Huk-Chul, the notorious bad boy son of the city’s mayor, is caught in the cross-fire of a police sting and is hit by a bullet meant for the beautiful detective Ih-Ohn. Huk-Chul falls into a coma and his father convinces the doctors to experiment with untested technology to revive him. When Huk-Chul wakes up, he discovers that he has superhuman powers and decides to use his new abilities to fight evil and corruption in the city. But little does he know, the source of all the corruption and crime is closer than he thinks…

About HERO:

HERO premieres exclusively on Celestial Movies on 3rd September and will air every day from Monday to Friday at 8pm, with an encore telecast at 10:45pm, on SingTel mio TV ch 52 and Starhub Cable TV Ch 868. Starhub Subscribers can also enjoy an exclusive HERO marathon featuring the first five episodes of the show for free, but it will only be made free on 9th September, 1pm-6pm. Celestial Movies [the channel] will be made free for viewing from 8th to 10th September.

Some Highlights About HERO:

This show will be the first Korean Superhero action series to be broadcasted in Singapore on our local cable channels; Starhub Cable TV and SingTel mio TV, and to celebrate the channel’s maiden foray into Korean content, Celestial Movies will be made free for viewing on Starhub from 8th – 10th September, where HERO will be featured in a five-episode marathon on 9th September. Also, HERO is premiered as the #1 programme in its timeslot among all cable channels in Korea in March 2012.

My take on HERO:

During the exclusive screening event, we were shown two episodes of the drama and I must admit, the drama was full of suspense, action, and also a little bit of humour. There were certain parts of the drama which I felt was quite cheesy but it was overall rather entertaining. In fact, after watching the 2nd episode, I was quite hooked for more. I can’t wait to catch the rest of the episodes [marathon-style] that will be screening on 9 September, Sunday, from 1 to 6pm! When I mentioned that the drama is a big-budget drama, it is really big budget because the first 2 episodes of HERO incurred a hefty sum of US$1 Million production budget! How many dramas do we know has such a big budget for its production? With HERO, the big budget nature of this production makes it feel more filmic than your typical Korean drama.

Here are some photos that were taken during the exclusive screening event at The Screening Room [Ann Siang Road].

From Hero Premiere 2012

I have a personal confession to make though; close friends of mine would have known that in the past, I was not a fan of cable TV and even then, the only channels I used to watch were Cartoon Network and Discovery Channel. Today, things are pretty much different for me because my fiancee has cable TV at home and we will always spend some time to watch and enjoy Taiwanese and Korean dramas together. In fact, she was the one who got me hooked to all the rather entertaining channels that are available on Starhub Cable TV. So, if you’re a fan of Korean dramas [or if you're a new convert like me] and you like action/thriller, you must catch this Korean drama that will start on 3 September [in 2 days time], Monday to Friday, at 8pm.

Hello Everyone,

a few months back when I was just chilling at Baby’s house, we caught this Taiwan Drama Serial called the “Office Girls“. Honestly, ever since I caught the first few episodes of Office Girls on Starhub Cable TV, I found myself addicted to watching the drama serial and I just could not wait for new episodes to be released. And for those of you whom know me really well, I haven’t really been watching the TV ever since I completed my GCE ‘O’ Levels. So, thanks to Baby, I found myself addicted to TV once again and honestly, TV is actually quite a good source of entertainment, information, and education!

So anyway, Office Girls is a Taiwan Drama Serial and as far as I know, only Starhub Cable TV broadcasts this show in Singapore. [thank God for Starhub Cable TV]. And just in case you are wondering what the genre of this drama serial is, it is a romance-comedy kinda drama serial consisting of 25 episodes in total. Filming for this show started in July 2011 and the show was broadcasted in August 2011. Anyways, the last episode of the drama serial was broadcasted in February 2012 in Taiwan and hence, the show is relatively quite recent and new. [Starhub is now showing the 22nd episode I think]

Now, the reason why I am “promoting” this drama serial [no, I don't get any commission or fees from this] is because I felt that this show is really worth catching. Though the serial is only 25 episodes in total, the storyline of the show is quite solid and it is also pretty balanced in the sense that you will feel satisfied having caught this show. In fact, while watching this show, I found myself portraying all sorts of emotions like happiness, sadness, jealousy, and even anger at times. So, I must really applaud the actors, director, and crews for putting up such a fantastic drama serial because it really does bring the audience on a emotional roller-coaster ride. And… the actors are all so yandao and chio!

And by the way, they even have a dedicated website  <– for the show and even a facebook page <– to connect with fans! That’s really ultra cool because you know what, the reason why Singapore drama serials cannot make it is because they lost touch and don’t connect with the audience! More often than not, Singapore drama serials are often “propagandas” and contain some messages that… … [you know I know can already]. Hence, I really really admire Taiwan for its contemporary pop culture that is so unlike Singapore!

Synopsis of Office Girls [from Wikipedia by the way]:

Sheng Xin Ren (Alice Ko) is 25 years old this year, and is a low-level staff in the sales department of Jing Shi Department Store, and has worked there nearly for 4 years.

Qin Zi Qi (Roy Chiu), 28, is son of a wealthy family who just graduated from MBA in USA and returns to Taiwan. His father Qin Mu Bai (Shen Meng Sheng/???) is the chairman of Jing Shi Department Store.

Zi Qi initially thought after his studies, his father will give him the rights to operate the Jing Shi Department Store. However, his father tells him that if he wants to take over the company, he must passes the test to work as low level staff in the sales department for 1 year, and obey the 5 rules, if he breaches any of the rules, he better be prepared to find another job.

As a result, Zi Qi comes to Jing Shi Department Store as an assistant in the sales department. In these 365 days, he not just only receive a low salary, but he will have to also accept the deployment of other staffs. He can no longer mixes around with friends, cannot drive his car, cannot shop for branded items and cannot afford to dine in a fine restaurant he also has to endure the crowded public transport everyday. His colleagues regard him as an odd job labor and often look down on him but they do not know his real identity.

At first, Zi Qi disagrees with Xin Ren who is responsible to bring him on the job, and despises her “Office Survival Guide” theory, but the “Grassroots Life Saving Theory” has managed to save him for a few times. Finally, Zi Qi got used to a normal live and after solving several major things in cooperation with Xin Ren, he also began to enjoy working in the sales department.

In order to arouse his own son’s morale who is smart but not intelligent, Mu Bai hires the person-in-charge of a well-known boutique agency Yu Cheng Feng (James Wen) as the general manager, and wants his son to battle with him. Cheng Feng’s handsome looks and his serious and responsible leadership style, made him popular not long after he joined Jing Shi Department Store, becoming the ideal prince charming in the minds of the female employees. Will Qi Zi who is jealous works harder due to the external stimulus effort?

After long time together, Qi Zi finds that he is falling in love with Xin Ren. As he realizes, Cheng Feng who he has always seen as a competitor has also began to pursue Xin Ren.
