While most people are either out partying, spending time with family members, or chilling out with friends, we were at Pearl’s Hill City Park with a crowd of about a 1,000 people training our calves and feeding the mosquitoes. This might seem like an absurd idea but really, we were there to catch the Red Bull Dark Knights 2013 that was organised by the European Red Bull.
From Red Bull Dark Knights 2013
The Red Bull Dark Knights is Singapore’s only night-time mountain bike downhill race and ever since its debut in 2011, the Red Bull Dark Knights has gained much popularity and its comeback this year at Pearl’s Hill City Park has attracted quite a number of riders from all over the world.
I have to say this, although I have been living in Singapore for the past 25 years, I have never been to Pearl’s Hill City Park and it was my virgin trip there. A look at the National Parks Website reveals that there is a restricted reservoir on top of the hill and if you’re clueless about where Pearl’s Hill City Park is, it is tucked away in the corner of Chinatown. It’s location is rather accessible as there are a couple of buses that serves the area and the nearest MRT Station is Outram Park Station, NOT Chinatown Station [unless you don't mind walking a longer route].

The walk from the carpark to the event ground was really quite a distance and there wasn’t any signages around to guide us.

When we arrived at the Race Village, it was bustling with activities, and tentages that sold food, drinks, and bicycle gears were set up.

Visitors were also entertained with a special screening of Red Bull Media House’s feature film, “Where the Trail Ends”. The 81 minutes long movie showcased the world’s top freeride mountain bikers search and ride unraveled terrain around the globe, making their expedition the most progressive and ambitious mountain biking ever attempted.
The DJ for the evening was electrifying. The music that he played were heart-pumping and groovy.

When we checked out the profiles of the riders whom were competing in the competition, we were quite surprised to find out that a majority of the competitors were Singaporeans.
Honestly, capturing photographs of the riders were extremely difficult as there was insufficient lighting and the riders were moving really fast. Although we were cleared to use flash photography, we decided against it as we do not want to affect the performance of the riders. Thankfully, we managed to get some good shots as we had access to the restricted zone.
From Red Bull Dark Knights 2013
Keeping in the theme of knights and castles, the obstacles were interestingly named arrowhead, slingshot, and the dragon’s back, and each of the obstacles tested the tenacity of all the riders whom participated in the competition. In fact, we witnessed quite a number of riders falling off their bikes but their sheer determination and perseverance pushed them beyond their physical limits to complete the entire course. For that, we salute all the bikers whom took part in the race.

The ballista obstacle is definitely a tough one because riders must have a solid control of their bike in order to prevent themselves from veering off-course.

Truly, the obstacle-filled race that is part urban part trail isn’t easy and one must have loads of guts to tackle the challenging obstacles.

The champion for the Red Bull Dark Knights 2013 is none other than 37-year-old Daniel Sprague from Australia. Daniel has been competing in off-road cycling events for 31 years and he has won 2 World Amateur BMX Championships, 7 Australian Championships, and 29 Western Australian Championships across both gravity MTB and BMX. He was also the champion for Red Bull Dark Knights 2011.

In second and third place respectively are Ditra Pranata, a 23-year-old professional biker from Indonesia, and 20-year-old Agung Fambudi.

Although we didn’t have quite a lot of good shots, we did managed to video down portions of the event and if you’re interested, you can check out the following video.
Truly, the Red Bull Dark Knights 2013 was an eye-opener and the Singaporeans didn’t fare that badly because most of them are in the top 10 positions. In fact, we were quite impressed by a 16-year-old Singaporean rider, Shadiq Putra, whom gotten 7th placing for the race.
From Red Bull Dark Knights 2013
Well, although we pretty much fed the thirsty mosquitoes, the action that we caught at Red Bull Dark Knights was definitely way more exciting than watching the Formula 1 Race and we hope that this blog entry will create a greater awareness of the local mountain biking scene. Cheerios~!
I once heard of this concept, “The Power of Words” when I attended a Church meeting many years back. The Pastor shared about why it is so important that we should always change our negative thoughts, words, and deeds and make it positive and I also remembered vividly that the Pastor shared pictures of an experiment that was conducted by Dr. Masaru Emoto, a Japanese author and entrepreneur.
In the experiment that was conducted by Dr. Masaru Emoto, he exposed water in glasses to different words, pictures, or music, and then thereafter froze and examined the aesthetics of the resulting crystals with microscopic photography.
The results of the experiment were pretty astounding and it showed that the water in glasses that were exposed to positive words, pictures, or music had a nicer structure than that of those water in glasses that were exposed to negative words, pictures, or music.
If you have the time to spare, do check out a video that I have found on Youtube regarding Dr. Masaru Emoto‘s experiment.
Well, if that wasn’t interesting enough, a local Singaporean by the name of Ken Casimir Koh conducted somewhat a similar experiment and documented it. In the experiment that took Ken 2 months and 15 days to conduct, Ken had three bowls of normal beancurd [a.k.a Tau Huay] bought from the hawker stalls and he labelled them A, B, and C.
You would see that in the video, Ken spoke positive words of encouragement to beancurd A, words of comparison to beancurd B, and discouraging words to beancurd C.
Interestingly enough, the results were quite amazing and the beancurd labelled A has a slower rate of decomposition as compared to beancurd B and beancurd C. Another interesting result that was observed from the experiment was that the container of beancurd B was deformed.
While it may be difficult to explain how and why such a phenomenon took place in the two separate experiments [and probably many other more] that were conducted, what is important for us to note here is that words contain energy and they can have an effect on the people around us.
The Book of Proverbs in the Bible says that the tongue [which translates to the words that we speak] is a tree of life and that it can promotes health. However, the Bible also says that a perverseness of the tongue can break the spirit and lead to death. [Proverbs 12:18, Proverbs 15:4]
Therefore, in all that we do and whether it be at home, school, or work, it is extremely important to watch what we say, do, and think about. Choose to be positive. Choose to be happy. Choose goodness in life.
We hope that you have been blessed with this blog entry and if it has benefited you, do share this with your family members and friends.
Last Saturday, we were graciously invited by omy Blog Club and Levi’s Singapore to attend the Levi’s 501 Interpretation Fashion Event [Celebrity Edition] that took place at Ion Orchard and it was there that we picked up some fashion and styling tips from the 4 local celebrities and boy, we sure learnt lots of good stuffs which we will be sharing with you in this blog entry.
From Levi’s 501 Interpretation 2013
To celebrate the 140th anniversary of Levi’s iconic 501 jeans, Levi’s introduced its first ever non-denim Levi’s 501 collection and to mark this really special occasion, Levi’s Singapore organised the Levi’s 501 Interpretation Fashion Event where 4 local celebrities, Felicia Chin, Tosh Zhang, Ya Hui & Ian Fang, showcased their Levi’s 501 interpretation in a fashion parade.
From Levi’s 501 Interpretation 2013
Before the event started, we were out and about shooting photographs and here’s me all decked-out in formal wear taking a picture at the Levi’s 501 Interpretation Photo Booth.
From Levi’s 501 Interpretation 2013
I also had one of the rarest opportunity to take a photograph with the local celebrities.
From Levi’s 501 Interpretation 2013
Before the event commenced, fans of the local celebrities were already gathered at the venue and here are Ya Hui‘s enthusiastic fans whom came prepared and dressed up in their custom-made “Ya Hui” tee-shirt.
From Levi’s 501 Interpretation 2013
The emcee for the day was Ivy Tan, a rather familiar Yes 933FM DJ and I was really privileged to have gotten a seat that had a vantage point for tons of photo opportunities.
From Levi’s 501 Interpretation 2013
The crowd was definitely huge and tons of people were gathered on the upper level too.

Fans of the local celebrities were invited to the stage for a game where they will have to work with the celebrities in decoding the parts of a jeans and label them with the right stickers accordingly.

Felicia Chin and her fan were the first pair that completed the game without any mistakes and they won the game almost effortlessly.

The next segment of the Levi’s 501 Interpretation Fashion Event was rather interesting because each celebrity had to style a 8 DAYS “Shirtless” Guy based on their personal style interpretation using Levi’s 501 jeans. As the 8 DAYS Shirtless Guys wore a tank top, they were not literally shirtless so don’t expect to see topless guys in this blog entry

Well, as we mentioned, we learnt some fashion and styling tips from the Levi’s 501 Interpretation Fashion Event and here you go:
1). Choose the colours of your outfits that complements your skin tone and hair colour.
2). Outfits that are dark and bold in colours makes you look more serious.
3). Outfits that are bright and lighter in colours makes you look more approachable.
4). When buying jeans, choose one that is comfy and one which matches your style of dressing.
5). Take your time to find the right type of jeans that suits you!
So, head down to the nearest Levi’s store near you and check out the many apparels that Levi’s has to offer! You will definitely be able to find something that matches your style and to top it off, simply upload a photo of yourself in a pair of Levi’s 501 jeans, include a short write-up explaining your style inspiration, and you might just find yourself walking away with $300 cash and a $200 Levi’s Voucher! What’s more, you get to score invites to an exclusive Levi’s 501 party that will be happening in May 2013.
This initiative calls for diversity in subjects and styling and the only consistent thread is the 501 jeans in the photo. Subjects can be both men and women and the 501 jeans can be cut-off, tie-dyed or heavily tailored. All interpretations are fair game. To upload your photo, simply log on to http://www.levis501.com.sg
Good luck!
After days of being so busy, we’re finally sharing with you Part 2 of Savour 2013.
For Part 1 of our Savour 2013 blog entry, you can read it here: http://awinsomelife.org/2013/04/15/post-event-blog-entry-about-savour-2013-part-1-of-2/
——————–
Having checked out what Savour Baking has to offer, we went to check out Savour Lifestyle. Now, this is the place where we were so tempted to get this soda-making machine that Sodastream was selling.
From Savour 2013
This soda-making machine works the same way as those used in the food and beverage restaurants and the soda that it produces is as good as the carbonated soft drinks that you buy from the provision stores. One really good thing about this soda-making machine is that it allows you to make your own flavoured soft-drinks. What’s more, it is really cheap and serving your own flavoured soft-drinks to guests visiting your house on a hot sunny afternoon would definitely leave an extremely positive impression!
From Savour 2013
To make your own flavoured soft drink, all you have to do is to manually pump carbon dioxide gas into the plain water and thereafter, add any concentrated syrup of your preference. After adding the concentrated syrup, mix the mixture well and there you go, you have created your very own carbonated soft drink that is ready to be consumed. It’s really easy!
From Savour 2013
There were two kinds of soda-making machines that Sodastream was selling and the only difference between the two is this; one does the carbonation of the drink automatically while the other requires manual handwork to carbonate the drink. So which is better? Obviously the one that requires manual handwork is better because you can control how fizzy you want your drink to be.
At Savour Lifestyle, we got to know about this local company, L’Earth Private Limited, that manufactures cutlery, plates, and storage containers that would come in handy for occasions such as house-warming party, BBQ party, and picnics. Now what’s really so special about their plastic wares are that they are totally environmentally-friendly. Their plastic wares are bio-degradable and are microwavable as well. The best part is, they can be washed again and reused all over again, thus saving money and saving the environment.
From Savour 2013
Usually, people would associate biodegradable plastic wares as being dull in colour and having a weird smell but check this out, it can be rather trendy as well.
From Savour 2013
The last booth that we checked out before heading for our respective workshops was Nespresso.
From Savour 2013
Nespresso needs no further introduction because previously, we have blogged about it here: http://awinsomelife.org/2013/03/28/nespresso-atelier-class-savour-2013-preview/
Again, we were tempted to get the Nespresso Pixie Coffee Machine because there was a $50 voucher that we could have utilised but we decided that we should ONLY get all these lifestyle gadgets once our new house is ready.
From Savour 2013
And off we went for our respective workshops.
Jacqueline went for the Garden Themed Cupcakes Workshop that was conducted by Cake Over Heels while I went for the Sparkling Wine of Italy Wine-Tasting Session that was conducted by the Italian Wine Club.
At Savour Wine, it was truly a haven for wine enthusiasts. There were all sorts of wines from many wine-producing countries and for just $12, you can savour 43 different types of wines from different winemakers! Now that’s really something to scream about.
From Savour 2013
Here I was at the Wine Theatre listening in to the the different kinds of Italian sparkling wines and we had the opportunity to taste a Prosecco, a Lambrusco, and an Asti Spumante.
From Savour 2013
From Savour 2013
Since the Wine Tasting Session ended rather early, I sneaked over to Savour Baking and spied on what Jacqueline was up to and here she was designing her very own Ladybird Cupcake after learning from the Chef at Cake Over Heels.
From Savour 2013
The Chef from Cake Over Heels taught the class how to design their own Garden Themed Cupcakes using fondant sugar and it is really amazing what you can do using fondant sugar. Usually, customised design cakes are either designed using fondant sugar or sugar icing.

Since we had a considerable amount of time before the evening classes, we went to the Gourmet Village to see what we could have for dinner.
Here are the pop-up restaurants by some of the famous Chefs:

Since the serving portion of food at the Gourmet Village was pricey and small, we decided to head back to Jason’s to have our fill.
And so for dinner we had……
……Japanese Sushi……

……Japanese Salmon Sashimi……

After our really awesome dinner, we went for our second last workshop and it was conducted by the same Chef from Cake Over Heels that conducted the Garden Themed Cupcakes Workshop.
From Savour 2013
This time round, we learnt how to make a “Chanel Handbag” Cupcake and it was really a tedious affair. There were many steps involved and you got to be really patient and meticulous to every intricate details.

Though it seems quite simple to do, it really wasn’t that easy because you will need to practise this craft over and over again in order to master it. Guess I will have to find a day to just stay at home and work on mastering my culinary and baking skills.
The last highlight for the evening was the Masterchef Class that we attended at the Gourmet Auditorium.
From Savour 2013
Chef Margot Janse collaborated with Chef Claude Bosi to conduct the cooking demonstration and it was really inspiring.

In case you don’t know, the hotel restaurant is considered one of South Africa’s best and is ranked #57 of the World’s 100 Best Restaurants!

Chef Claudi Bosi is a French Chef and he has years of culinary experience in Michelin-starred Restaurants in France. He later opened his own restaurant known as Hibiscus in London which currently holds two Michelin Stars! Chef Claudi Bosi’s Hibiscus Restaurant is ranked #94 of the World’s 100 Best Restaurants!
Honestly, we had a really fabulous time at Savour 2013. Considering the number of classes and workshops that we attended, Savour 2013 was really worth the money because we have learnt quite a number of skills that would take our culinary and baking skills to the next level. Truly, we love Savour 2013 and we can’t wait for Savour 2014. Till then, here’s us signing off~!
