Old Street Bah Kut Teh @ Upper Paya Lebar Road

Hello Everyone,

Baby and I were passing by along Upper Paya Lebar Road in search of a good place for dinner and we chanced upon this stall known as the Old Street Bah Kut Teh. Since the store had an “atas” look  and they have received some culinary awards, we decided to give it a try.

As we were rushing for time, we didn’t ordered much. But this one dining experience was a complete mistake and it would be our first and last. We’ll explain why.

One look at the menu and the pricing was quite a turn-off already.

The most important that that I want to comment about this store is the lousy service provided by the service staffs. In most of the Bah Kut Teh stores that we have been to, most of the service staffs would attend to us, take our orders, and then serve our food when it was ready. Apparently, at this particular Bah Kut Teh store, it is more of a self-service concept where you have to go to the cashier, place your order, and wait for the service staff to serve your food. While I do understand the concept of self-service, the great disappointment was seeing other guests whom had questions about the dish and when they raise their hands to seek the attention of the service staffs to ask them some questions about the dish, the service staffs promptly assumed that the guests wanted to place an order and gestured them to the cashier without even listening and thinking. We observed that it was not just one guest whom were treated this way but in fact, most of the guests were treated like that. Surly, this wasn’t a really polite way of attending to guests.

After placing our orders with the cashier, we were given this number tag so that the service staff could bring our food to our table when its ready.

We ordered the pork ribs soup and seriously, the soup wasn’t that great. It lacked the flavour of the traditional Bak Kut Teh and tasted more like plain water. As always, I expect soups to be served piping hot but well, this store failed in meeting that expectation I have for soups. The meat was very tough and even when we asked to have our soup to be refilled, it was still not piping hot.

And we also ordered the pig’s kidney soup. Soup wasn’t served piping hot and the kidney wasn’t cooked properly.

While we didn’t get to taste the rest of their dishes and wouldn’t be able to comment much about the food, this one dining experience was so bad that we would not patronise them again. Simply put, the service wasn’t that great and the quality of the food didn’t quite meet our expectations. This would in fact be our first and last visit to Old Street Bah Kut Teh unless they could lower their price, improve on their service, and serve better quality food. We have learnt not to judge books by their cover. Just because the store has an “atas” look and won some culinary awards, it doesn’t mean that their food and service is great. For now, I guess we will continue to stick to our usual Bah Kut Teh store that we always frequent.

Stay tuned for more updates from us!

God Bless!
